Current progress in ternary LREBa2Cu3Oy materials and their application

The J_c and H_irr values at 77 K of ternary light-rare-earth compounds, LREBa₂Cu₃O_y “LRE-123”, are usually high enough to serve in various applications. Several sources of vortex pinning can be in these composites tailored to fit the needs of the particular application. The list comprises LRE/Ba solid solution, oxygen vacancies, large particles of secondary phases, twin planes, nanoscale lamellas, etc. By means of the latter defects one can achieve a very high irreversibility field. Refinement of secondary phase particles and the optimal choice of their amount enhance the electromagnetic performance in a broad temperature range, up vicinity of T_c, allowing levitation at liquid oxygen, 90.2 K. An optimum content of MoO₃ doubles the self-field super-current at 77 K, H||c-axis. Altogether, the pinning tailoring in ternary LRE-123 materials provides a flexible and reliable way to fit the electromagnetic performance with the needs of sophisticated high-temperature and high-magnetic-field applications.     

Multilayer holographic recording using a two-color-absorption photopolymer

We developed a sensitive two-color-absorption photopolymer in which holograms are recorded by simultaneous irradiation with a 660 nm interference light and a 410 nm gate light. Doped with bis(silyl)pentathiophene as a two-color-photosensitive dye and 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone as a radical photopolymerization initiator; its matrix contains low-refractive index binding polymers and high-refractive index monomers. The sensitivity and diffraction efficiency of 25 mum thick layers are from 1.2 x 10(-9) to 3.7 x 10(-9) cm2/mJ and from 1% to 4%. We made a three-photopolymer-layer waveguide structure, where each photopolymer layer and high-refractive index adhesive layer serves as a core layer and is sandwiched between two low-refractive index glass substrates that serve as clad layers. Gate light propagated through the adhesive layers, reference and object beams intersected the photopolymer layers, and different diffraction patterns could be written in each layer.     

Critical duration of intracellular Ca2+ response required for continuous translocation and activation of cytosolic phospholipase A2

When cells are exposed to certain external stimuli, arachidonic acid (AA) is released from the membrane and serves as a precursor of various types of eicosanoids. A Ca2+-regulated cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) plays a dominant role in the release of AA. To closely examine the relation between Ca2+ response and AA release by stimulation of G protein-coupled receptors, we established several lines of Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing platelet-activating factor receptor or leukotriene B4 receptor. Measurement of intracellular Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) demonstrated that cell lines capable of releasing AA elicited a sustained [Ca2+]i increase when stimulated by agonists. The prolonged [Ca2+]i elevation is the result of Ca2+ entry, because this elevation was blocked by EGTA treatment or in the presence of Ca2+ channel blockers (SKF 96365 and methoxyverapamil). cPLA2 fused with a green fluorescent protein (cPLA2-GFP) translocated from the cytosol to the perinuclear region in response to increases in [Ca2+]i. When EGTA was added shortly after [Ca2+]i increase, the cPLA2-GFP returned to the cytosol, without liberating AA. After a prolonged [Ca2+]i increase, even by EGTA treatment, the enzyme was not readily redistributed to the cytosol. Thus, we propose that a critical time length of [Ca2+]i elevation is required for continuous membrane localization and full activation of cPLA2.     

Current status of HIV infection in Yunnan Province of China

In cooperation with the Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine and Yunnan Province Provincial Office for AIDS Control and Prevention, we studied the current status of HIV infection intravenous drug users (IVDUs) and other high risk groups in Yunnan province of China. As of the end of 1995, 1,807 HIV cases were officially reported (Positive rate was 0.6%), of which 1,278 (77.9%) were IVDUs, and 24 were their spouses. The majority of cases were found among the Dai minority male farmers near Ruili which borders on Myammar, but HIV also appears to be spreading among the Han people. HIV antibody positive rates among commercial sex workers, pregnant women and blood donors were 0.2%, 0.07% and 0.04%, respectively. A system for surveillance of HIV has been developed, but preventive strategies to cope with HIV epidemic are not sufficient. As HIV/AIDS is now a global issue, (1) the integration and coordination of such preventive strategies in cooperation with community health workers, (2) general health education for condom use promotion and (3) care of psychological vulnerable person such as IVDUs, should be developed.     

A compact in-line polarimeter using a Faraday rotator

We have developed a compact in-line polarimeter for monitoring the polarization of light in active fiber. It consists of two parts: a half-mirror inserted into a trench cut at a slant across the fiber so that it reflects a portion of the optical beam and the combination of a magnetized Faraday rotator plate sandwiched between mirrors and a four-channel detector.     

Ontogenetic studies of seizure patterns and seizure activities induced by cortical focus

Medical audit and continuing medical education (CME) are now the mainstays of quality assurance in hospitals. Audits should address problems that have serious consequences for patients if proper treatment is not given. The single most important step is the selection of essential or scientific criteria that relate process to outcomes. CME does less than commonly believed to improve care. Today, quality assurance increasingly means a near-guarantee to every patient of appropriate treatment and fewest possible complications. Maintenance of the public trust rests on a firm commitment of the medical staff and board to this principle, implemented through an organized program of quality assurance. Under these conditions, medical audit and CME can effectively improve care by improving physician performance.     

Microstructure and strength of Si-Ti-C-O,fibre-reinforced aluminium and aluminium alloys

Microstructures of Si-Ti-C-O fibre-reinforced aluminium and aluminium alloys were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, and both conventional and analytical transmission electron microscopy. In the latter samples, some inclusions were observed between the matrix and the fibres. From the electron diffraction, high resolution microscopy and compositional analysis by energy-dispersive X-ray, the inclusions were identified as the α-Al-Si-Fe phase. Since the longitudinal three-point bending strength decreases with the increase of iron content, it was concluded that the α-phase inclusions on the surface of the fibre contribute to the lower strength of the composites based on this alloy.     

Test generation by activation and defect-drive (TEGAD)

This paper describes an efficient test generation method based on activation and defect-drive using random patterns. The activation process generates patterns to control any circuit node to 0 and 1. After the activation process, the defect-drive propagates the faulted signal, step by step, towards the external output by using parallel fault simulation. The applications are discussed for several gate arrays and micro-processors. The computer run time for the test generation was observed to be proportional to the number of nodes to the power of 1.7 in the case of bit-slice microprocessors. The improvement in manual patterns by the addition of the generated ones was also demonstrated.
