The photostabilization of wood surfaces is desirable to enhance the life of wood under exterior use and to improve the performance of clear coatings on wood surfaces. Chemical modification of wood has been found effective in upgrading properties such as biological durability and dimensional stability and has been suggested as a potential way for inducing photostability on wood surfaces. In this study, the photostability of chemically modified wood was assessed under accelerated weathering conditions. Wood specimens of Pinus roxburghii (Chir pine) were esterified with benzoyl chloride to 19.5 wt % gain and exposed to a xenon arc light source in a Weather‐O‐Meter for different periods ranging from 0 to 500 h. The irradiated samples were analyzed for color changes and chemical changes. The analysis of color changes in wood surfaces by ultraviolet–visible irradiation was carried out with a color measuring (CIELAB) system, and chemical changes were characterized with fluorescence and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The esterification of wood by benzoyl chloride suppressed the color changes (photodiscoloration) due to irradiation. Modification also reduced the lignin degradation and generation of carbonyl groups on the surface of the irradiated wood. The fluorescence emission spectra of irradiated unmodified wood showed a large reduction in intensity and a large redshift in the emission maximum, whereas modified wood showed only a small change in fluorescence intensity on irradiation. The results show that the esterification of wood with benzoyl chloride was effective for the photostabilization of the wood polymers. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2006  相似文献

Self-assembled bundling and catalyst removal can enhance the field emission stability and density of vertically-aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (VA-MWCNTs). These catalyst-free, opened tip, VA-MWCNTs offered better emission stability than the as grown samples. Both the emission stability and density were further enhanced as the opened-tip MWCNTs self-assembled into arrays of conical bundles. Theoretical simulation suggests that higher emission density was due to the reduced screening effects. The simulated local fields at the tips of the bundles suggest for a two-order of magnitude lower electric field loading on MWCNTs and contribute to prolong emission stability needed for practical applications.  相似文献

Research focused on determining the fundamental mechanisms by which lactate influences color stability has not considered a direct effect of lactate on myoglobin. Thus, the objective of this study was to use Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization–Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry to examine lactate adduction to myoglobin. Equine oxymyoglobin and equine carboxymyoglobin (0.15 mM) were incubated with sodium lactate (200 mM) at 4 °C, pH 5.6 in 50 mM sodium citrate buffer or at 37 °C, pH 7.4 in 50 mM sodium phosphate buffer, simulating typical meat storage and physiological conditions, respectively. Controls consisted of myoglobin plus a volume of deionized water equivalent to that used to deliver the lactate treatments. No peaks corresponding to lactate-Mb adducts could be detected in the mass spectra of samples incubated up to 360 min at pH 7.4, 37 °C or 8 days at pH 5.6 and 4 °C. Our results suggest that lactate did not form covalent adducts with equine oxy- and carboxy-myoglobin.  相似文献

Ultrasonic mist chemical vapour deposition (UM-CVD) system has been developed to prepare ZnO nanopowder. This is a promising method for large area deposition at low temperature inspite of being simple, inexpensive and safe. The particle size, lattice parameters and crystal structure of ZnO nanopowder are characterized by in situ high temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD). Surface morphology of powder was studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and field emission electron microscope (FESEM). The optical properties are observed using UV-visible spectrophotometer. The influence of high temperature vacuum annealing on XRD pattern is systematically studied. Results of high temperature XRD showed prominent 100, 002 and 101 reflections among which 101 is of highest intensity. With increase in temperature, a systematic shift in peak positions towards lower 2θ values has been observed, which may be due to change in lattice parameters. Temperature dependence of lattice constants under vacuum shows linear increase in their values. Diffraction patterns obtained from TEM are also in agreement with the XRD data. The synthesized powder exhibited the estimated direct bandgap (E g) of 3.43 eV. The optical bandgap calculated from Tauc’s relation and the bandgap calculated from the particle size inferred from XRD were in agreement with each other.  相似文献

An integrated thermofluidic analysis of DNA hybridization, in the presence of combined electrokinetically and/or pressure-driven microchannel flows, is presented in this work. A comprehensive model is developed that combines bulk and surface transport of momentum, heat and solute with the pertinent hybridization kinetics, in a detailed manner. Results confirm that electrokinetic accumulation of DNA occurs within a few seconds or minutes, as compared to passive hybridization that could sometimes take several hours. Further, it is observed that by increasing the accumulation time, significantly higher concentration of DNA can be achieved at the capture probes. However, this eventually tends to attain a saturation state, due to a lesser probability of successful hybridization on account of a prior accumulation of target DNA molecules on the capture probe strands. While favorable pressure gradients augment DNA hybridization rates that are otherwise established by the electro-osmotic transport, adverse pressure gradients of comparable magnitude may turn out to be much less consequential in retarding the same. Such effects can be of potential significance in the designing of a microfluidic arrangement to achieve the fastest rate of DNA hybridization.  相似文献

Copper molds are critical components in the continuous casting of steel. Surface condition of the mold directly affects product quality, and premature failure/low wear life affects the output of the continuous casting plant. This paper presents the failure analysis of a nickel coating on a copper plate during a plant trial using in situ ultrasonic testing for coating thickness evaluation and in situ testing to confirm the loss of coating. The failure analysis indicated maximum coating wear near the bottom corners of the mold. More wear was found on the wide end face compared with that observed on the narrow face. On top portion of the mold, wear was almost negligible. Based on the wear profile obtained during trial, it was recommended that the coating on the bottom portion of the mold have a higher hardness to improve mold life.  相似文献

The application of pervaporation (PV) to the removal of volatile organic from aqueous solutions has become very interesting in the last few years. It is caused by the increasing level of compounds, such as petrochemical solvents (benzene, toluene, and xylenes) or chlorinated solvents (trichloroethylene or tetrachloroethylene), which are polluting the natural environment. In this work, effects of polyimide (PI) (prepared by direct polycondensation of dianhydride and diamine followed by thermal cyclization of polyamic acid) filler on PV properties of poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) have been studied. PDMS membrane filled with PI was used for the separation of benzene (Bz) and toluene (Tol) from the diluted aqueous solution and the results were compared with the neat PDMS membrane of similar thickness. The PDMS‐PI membrane showed normalized flux (J′) upto 1.2 kg μm/m2h for Bz and 1.48 kg μm/m2h for Tol and selectivity of organics varies from 7.3 to 3.2 for Bz and 8.9 to 2.8 for Tol with increasing concentration of organics. Concentration of PI filler in PDMS varied 5–25% w/w. PI filler increases thermal as well as mechanical stability of filled PDMS membranes. PDMS membrane filled with 25% PI was chosen for the pervaporation studies. The membranes were characterized by FTIR, thermogravimetric analyser and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical strength of PDMS filled with 25% w/w PI (SPI‐25) membrane was found to be 2.7 MPa. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Mechanical tests were performed on a powder-metallurgically processed 7093/SiC/15p discontinuously reinforced aluminum (DRA) composite in different heat-treatment conditions, to determine the influence of matrix characteristics on the composite response. The work-hardening exponent and the strain to failure varied inversely to the strength, similar to monolithic Al alloys, and this dependence was independent of the dominant damage mode. The damage consisted of SiC particle cracks, interface and near-interface debonds, and matrix rupture inside intense slip bands. Fracture surfaces revealed particle fracture-dominated damage for most of the heat-treatment conditions, including an overaged (OA) condition that exhibited a combination of precipitates at the interface and a precipitate-free zone (PFZ) in the immediate vicinity. In the highly OA conditions and in a 450 °C as-rolled condition, when the composite strength became less than 400 MPa, near-interface matrix rupture became dominant. A combination of a relatively weak matrix and a weak zone around the particle likely contributed to this damage mode over that of particle fracture. Fracture-toughness tests show that it is important to maintain a proper geometry and testing procedure to obtain valid fracture-toughness data. Overaged microstructures did reveal a recovery of fracture toughness as compared to the peak-aged (PA) condition, unlike the lack of toughness recovery reported earlier for a similar 7XXX (Al-Zn-Cu-Mg)-based DRA. The PA material exhibited extensive localization of damage and plasticity. The low toughness of the DRA in this PA condition is explored in detail, using fractography and metallography. The damage and fracture micromechanisms formed the basis for modeling the strength, elongation, toughness, and damage, which are described in Part II of this work. A performance study of the box-type solar cooker was made with special emphasis on the shape of lid of the utensils used in a solar cooker. The study revealed that the performance of a solar cooker can be improved if a utensil with a concave shape lid is used instead of a plain lid, generally provided with the solar cooker. The stagnation temperature for a utensil having a concave lid was about 2–7% more than the utensil with a normal lid. The time required for heating the water up to the same temperature in both the utensils was reduced by about 1–13% when a concave shape lid was used.  相似文献
