Hebrew and Arabic are Semitic languages with a similar morphological structure and orthographies that differ in visual complexity. Two experiments explored the interaction of the characteristics of orthography and hemispheric abilities on lateralized versions of a letter-matching task (Experiment 1) and a global-local task (Experiment 2). In Experiment 1, native Hebrew readers and native Arabic readers fluent in Hebrew matched letters in the 2 orthographies. The results support the hypothesis that Arabic orthography is more difficult than Hebrew orthography for participants who can read both languages and that this difficulty has its strongest effects in the left visual field. In Experiment 2, native Arabic speakers performed a global-local letter detection task with Arabic letters with 2 types of inconsistent stimuli: different and similar. The results support the hypothesis that the right hemisphere of skilled Arabic readers cannot distinguish between similar Arabic letters, whereas the left hemisphere can. Tamoxifen is a synthetic estrogen analog which may regulate osteogenesis in vivo by virtue of its antiglucocorticoid properties. We have examined tamoxifen regulation of glucocorticoid-induced osteogenesis in two different in vitro bone systems: the chicken periosteal osteogenesis model (CPO) and rat bone marrow stromal cells (RBMC). Hormone uptake studies were conducted with the osteosarcoma cell line, ROS 17/2.8. In the CPO model, alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity and collagen synthesis were stimulated by the glucocorticoid dexamethasone (Dex; 0.1 microM). These Dex-mediated effects were inhibited by increasing concentrations of tamoxifen (10-100 microM). Similarly, in the RBMC model, Dex-dependent (0.01 microM Dex) mineralized tissue formation and AP activity were blocked by tamoxifen (0.1 microM). Although tamoxifen inhibited Dex-mediated increases of AP activity in ROS 17/2.8 cells, it did not inhibit uptake of 3H-Dex or of 3H-estrogen. Northern analyses showed that tamoxifen did not affect messenger RNAs (mRNAs) for AP. Tamoxifen did seem to reduce mRNA for collagen type I, but not bone sialoprotein, osteopontin, and osteocalcin. Dex-induced increases for all proteins mRNAs in the RBMC model were not reduced by tamoxifen. Similarly, tamoxifen had no effects on cellular proliferation. We conclude that tamoxifen has no direct effect on gene expression of bone-related proteins of osteoblastic cells. Further, in the ROS 17/2.8 cell line, the antiglucocorticoid properties of tamoxifen do not appear to be mediated through either Dex or estrogen receptors. 相似文献

Brains of the gilthead seabream, Sparus aurata, contain three different forms of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH): seabream (sb) GnRH, chicken (c) GnRH-II, and salmon (s) GnRH. In the present study, we developed three specific enzyme-linked-immunosorbent assays (ELISA) for sbGnRH, cGnRH-II, and sGnRH and used them to measure the levels of each GnRH form in the pituitary of male and female seabream at different stages of gametogenesis. The sensitivity was 6 pg/well for the sbGnRH assay, 7 pg/well for the cGnRH-II assay, and 2 pg/well for the sGnRH assay. Levels of each of the three GnRH forms were measured in pituitaries from fish sampled at the beginning of gonadal recrudescence and during the spawning season. Of the three forms, only sbGnRH and cGnRH-II were detected in the pituitary, irrespective of reproductive state or sex. Recrudescent fish had similar levels of sbGnRH and cGnRH-II in the pituitary. In sexually mature fish, the levels of sbGnRH were higher than those in recrudescent fish while pituitary cGnRH-II content remained unchanged. Consequently, sbGnRH levels were 3- to 17-fold higher than cGnRH-II levels in mature fish. Positive correlations also existed between pituitary sbGnRH content and pituitary and plasma gonadotropin (GtH) II levels. Surprisingly, mature 1-year-old males had significantly higher levels of sbGnRH in the pituitary than mature 3-year-old males, while pituitary and plasma GtH II levels were similar between these two groups. Although the reason for this difference in sbGnRH levels is unclear, a possible role of sbGnRH in the processes of puberty or sex-inversion is implied. Based on the present results, it can be suggested that in the gilthead seabream, sbGnRH is the most relevant form of GnRH in the control of reproduction. 相似文献

The deductive approach is a formal program construction method in which the derivation of a program from a given specification is regarded as a theorem-proving task. To construct a program whose output satisfies the conditions of the specification, we prove a theorem stating the existence of such an output. The proof is restricted to be sufficiently constructive so that a program computing the desired output can be extracted directly from the proof. The program we obtain is applicative and may consist of several mutually recursive procedures. The proof constitutes a demonstration of the correctness of this program.To exhibit the full power of the deductive approach, we apply it to a nontrivial example—the synthesis of a unification algorithm. Unification is the process of finding a common instance of two expressions. Algorithms to perform unification have been central to many theorem-proving systems and to some programming-language processors.The task of deriving a unification algorithm automatically is beyond the power of existing program synthesis systems. In this paper,we use the deductive approach to derive an algorithm from a simple, high-level specification of the unification task. In the process of decision making for design and execution of highway construction projects, long‐range cost forecasting is one of the most significant and complicated problems. This paper describes the development of a model that enables the user to make long‐range cost projections, taking into consideration general characteristics of the highway construction industry, as well as pertinent local conditions. The model presented uses conventional statistical methods to represent the main categories of typical jobs in the highway construction industry. From these categories, a composite model is created by assigning different weights to the input elements costs and then choosing a series of indicators to predict price trends for each separate element of the composite model. Use of this model reveals that bid volume in a certain area is a factor that has significant influence upon cost forecasts. This paper is accompanied by a case study based on actual data from highway construction projects performed for the Florida Department of Transportation in the years 1968–1981. 相似文献

Integrating self‐healing capabilities into soft electronic devices increases their durability and long‐term reliability. Although some advances have been made, the use of self‐healing electronics in wet and/or (under)water environments has proven to be quite challenging, and has not yet been fully realized. Herein, a new highly water insensitive self‐healing elastomer with high stretchability and mechanical strength that can reach 1100% and ≈6.5 MPa, respectively, is reported. The elastomer exhibits a high (>80%) self‐healing efficiency (after ≈ 24 h) in high humidity and/or different (under)water conditions without the assistance of an external physical and/or chemical triggers. Soft electronic devices made from this elastomer are shown to be highly robust and able to recover their electrical properties after damages in both ambient and aqueous conditions. Moreover, once operated in extreme wet or underwater conditions (e.g., salty sea water), the self‐healing capability leads to the elimination of significant electrical leakage that would be caused by structural damages. This highly efficient self‐healing elastomer can help extend the use of soft electronics outside of the laboratory and allow a wide variety of wet and submarine applications. 相似文献

Summary We present here an axiomatic approach which enables one to prove by formal methods that his program is totally correct (i.e., it terminates and is logically correct—does what it is supposed to do). The approach is similar to Hoare's approach [3] for proving that a program is partially correct (i.e., that whenever it terminates it produces correct results). Our extension to Hoare's method lies in the possibility of proving both correctness and termination by one unified formalism. One can choose to prove total correctness by a single step, or by incremental proof steps, each step establishing more properties of the program. 相似文献

Thermotropic liquid crystal polymers are a new class of polymeric materials that consist of rigid backbone molecules and thus, even in the quiescent condition, take extended chain conformation to form optically anisotropic melts. A systematic investigation was carried out on how this type of material responds to two basic flow fields: shear and elongation. Rheological properties of the polymer in these flow fields have also been measured. It was found that a high level of molecular orientation was readily obtained by elongational flow but not with shear flow. Specifically, extraordinarily high orientation was obtained when the melt was subjected to small elongational strains, whiel shear strain or shear rate had little effect. A possible mechanism to explain these behaviors is illustrated based on the existing observations or theories of rodlike molecules. This finding was used to interpret the orientation distribution in the extruded and injection-molded articles. 相似文献

Transformational leadership and group interaction as climate antecedents: A social network analysis.
In order to test the social mechanisms through which organizational climate emerges, this article introduces a model that combines transformational leadership and social interaction as antecedents of climate strength (i.e., the degree of within-unit agreement about climate perceptions). Despite their longstanding status as primary variables, both antecedents have received limited empirical research. The sample consisted of 45 platoons of infantry soldiers from 5 different brigades, using safety climate as the exemplar. Results indicate a partially mediated model between transformational leadership and climate strength, with density of group communication network as the mediating variable. In addition, the results showed independent effects for group centralization of the communication and friendship networks, which exerted incremental effects on climate strength over transformational leadership. Whereas centralization of the communication network was found to be negatively related to climate strength, centralization of the friendship network was positively related to it. Magnetic field alignment of rod-coil block copolymers is shown to proceed through coupling to the diamagnetic moment of individual rod blocks. Block copolymer self-assembly then leads to alignment of the interfaces perpendicular to the field lines and long range order on a 10 nm lengthscale. This is in contrast to previously demonstrated alignment techniques, which couple to the block copolymer interfaces rather than individual molecules.
