Adaptive mutation parameter toggling genetic algorithm for phase-only array synthesis

A genetic algorithm that speeds convergence for phased array phase-only synthesis by adaptively toggling between nine mutation parameter pairs is illustrated. This adaptive algorithm outperforms any of the corresponding nine static cases where these same mutation parameters are held constant throughout the optimisation process.

Safety measures in thermal waste air purification units . Safety problems may arise in thermal waste air purification units from the occasional explosive nature of the exhaust gases, which may cause a flashback into the production plant. This must be avoided by the installation of safety devices that arrest a flashback. The number of such safety devices is determined by the probability of formation of explosive waste air, according to the zone classification of the explosion-protection guide. The principal explosion arrestor devices installed between combustion chamber and production plant are liquid submersion systems, detonation barriers, and dynamic flashback-free inlets into the combustion chamber, all of which must be operated under instrumental surveillance. This report presents a state-of-the-art summary of all suitable procedures and safety devices permitting safe design of systems for thermal air cleaning problems encountered in practice.     

Model reactions on roast aroma formation

Summary From model roastings of mixtures containing serine, threonine and sucrose about 350 volatile compounds were separated and identified by GC/MS. Among them there were more than 100 monocyclic furans, 13 furanones and 8 bicyclic furans, the mass spectra and retention indices of which are recorded. The most important mass spectrometric fragmentation pathways are described. Spectra obtained from roasting coffee under identical conditions are compared with the spectra from model roastings.

Zusammenfassung Aus Modellröstungen von Gemischen aus Serin, Threonin und Saccharose unter den Bedingungen der Kaffeeröstung wurden etwa 350 flüchtige Verbindungen mittels GC/MS getrennt und identifiziert. Unter ihnen befanden sich über 100 monocyclische Furane und 13 Furanone sowie 8 bicyclische Furane, deren Massenspektren und Retentions-indices angegeben werden. Die wichtigsten massenspektrometrischen Fragmentierungswege werden beschrieben. -Die aus einer gleich behandelten Röstung von Rohkaffee erhaltenen Spektren werden mit denen der Modellröstungen verglichen.

Fixed mesh front‐tracking methodology for finite element simulations

A direct front‐tracking method using an Eulerian–Lagrangian formulation is developed in two space dimensions. The front‐tracking method is general in that it can track any type of interface once its local velocity is specified or has been determined by calculation. The method uses marker points to describe the interface position and tracks the interface evolution on a fixed finite‐element mesh, including growth, contraction, splitting and merging. Interfacial conditions are applied directly at the interface position. The method is applied to three scenarios that involve different interface conditions and are based on energy and mass diffusion. The three calculations are for the dendritic solidification of a pure substance, the cellular growth of an alloy, and the Ostwald ripening of silica particles in silicon. Numerical results show that very complicated interface morphologies and topological changes can be simulated properly and efficiently. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Balloon dilatation in acute myocardial infarct in routine clinical practice: results of the register of the Working Society of Leading Cardiologic Hospital Physicians in 4,625 patients

Balloon angioplasty as the treatment of first choice in the setting of an acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is gaining widespread acceptance because of favourable results from specialised centres concerning high patency rates and low mortality. This study reports the results of angioplasty for AMI at large community hospitals during 1992-1995. 4625 procedures were performed at 68 centres of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Leitender Kardiologischer Krankenhaus?rzte (ALKK). The age of the patients was 60.8 +/- 11.3 years, with 75.1% men. The infarct related artery was the left anterior descendent in 43%, the right coronary artery in 37%, the circumflex artery in 16%, a bypass graft in 2.3% and the left main stem in 1.4% of patients. The success rate (residual stenosis < 50%) of the intervention was 86%. There was a wide range of procedures per centre, with a median of 40 AMI angioplasties per year and centre. The amount of angioplasties for AMI in relation to all angioplasties performed during this period rose from 5.2% in 1992 to 5.9% in 1995 (p = 0.01). Local complications at the puncture site occurred in 3.2%, with the need for a surgical intervention in 1.1% of patients. In 273 (5.9%) of the patients a second angioplasty was performed during the hospital stay. Aortocoronary bypass surgery was performed in 3% of the patients. Hospital mortality was 9.5% (438/4625 patients). The mortality rate remained constant during the years investigated (1992: 10.6%; 1993: 8.6%; 1994: 9.7%; 1995: 9.8%; p = ns). Higher mortality was observed in older patients, patients with multiple vessel disease, the left anterior descending artery or a bypass graft as infarct related artery as well as in patients with failed reperfusion (residual stenoses > 50%). Hospitals with a case load of more than 40 angioplasties for AMI per year showed a lower mortality as compared to the others. In clinical practice at large community hospitals results of angioplasty for AMI concerning mortality, complications and technical success rate are comparable to those of highly specialised centres. The absolute numbers of angioplasties for AMI increased constantly over the years.

Report about continuous fetal monitoring of heart rate and movements 9-30 hours after diazepam-intoxication. in an early stage after intoxication fetal movements are associated with FHF-decelerations, later on with accelerations. A sinusoidal like pattern may be caused by fetal suckling movements.     

The relative contribution of selected carpal bones to global wrist motion during simulated planar and out-of-plane wrist motion

The present study assesses the endocrinological, endometrial histology and vaginal ultrasound profiles of nomegestrol acetate subdermal implant users at varying times after insertion. Follicle stimulatory hormone, luteinizing hormone, oestradiol, progesterone, vaginal ultrasound assessment of the ovaries and the histological dating of the endometrium were serially assessed for a period of 50 days immediately after the insertion, and after at 6 months and 12 months of use. The endocrinological results of this prospective observational clinical trial indicated that 75% of the cycles across the study period in Uniplant users were anovulatory, 63% showing development of a persistent non-luteinized follicle. Anovulatory cycles devoid of follicular development were seen primarily in the first months after Uniplant insertion. Ovulatory cycles represented 25% of the Uniplant cycles. Inadequate luteal phase or disregulation of follicular growth was a common feature of ovulatory cycles. In conclusion, these findings suggest that the contraceptive mechanisms of a single nomegestrol acetate subdermal implant involve prevention of follicular growth, development of a persistent non-luteinized follicle, inadequate luteal phase and disruption of the endometrial architecture.     

Isothermic growth of one spherulite around circular obstacles in a polypropylene foil

Growth of one spherulite within a thin foil of polypropylene around one circular obstacle or around combinations of circular obstacles is investigated. For each obstacle there exists a region of shadow, seen from the nucleus of the spherulite, which influences the growth of the spherulite. Within any region of shadow the growth fronts are evolvents of the obstacle's boundary, because the spherulite grows isotropically. When two growth fronts belonging to one spherulite meet each other inside the shadow, an intrinsic grain boundary is formed for each obstacle. Additionally, growth of one spherulite around a rectangular obstacle and a spherical obstacle is investigated.
