This study compared the direction of social reaming in 2 populations of Barbados Zenaida doves (Zenaida aurita). One population (St. James) is territorial; it competes aggressively with conspecifics but scramble competes with heterospecifics. The other population (Deep Water Harbour) forages in large homospecific flocks. Field observations were conducted to quantify intraspecific and interspecific patterns of foraging association and aggression. Wild-caught doves from both areas were then tested on novel foraging tasks demonstrated by either a conspecific or a heterospecific tutor. In all experiments, St. James doves learned more readily from the heterospecific tutor (Carib grackle [Quiscalus lugubris]), whereas Deep Water Harbour doves learned more readily from the conspecific tutor. The type of competitive feeding interaction in the field (i.e., scramble vs. interference) appears to better predict the pattern of social learning in an experiment than does species identity. While researchers are increasingly interested in understanding the boundaries surrounding the work and personal life domains, few have tested the propositions set forth by theory. Boundary theory proposes that individuals manage the boundaries between work and personal life through processes of segmenting and/or integrating the domains. The authors investigated boundary management profiles of 332 workers in an investigation of the segmentation-integration continuum. Cluster analysis indicated consistent clusters of boundary management practices related to varying segmentation and integration of the work and personal life domains. But, the authors suggest that the segmentation-integration continuum may be more complicated. Results also indicated relationships between boundary management practices and work-personal life interference and work-personal life enhancement. Less flexible and more permeable boundaries were related to more interference, while more flexible and more permeable boundaries were related to more enhancement. Mice selectively bred for high (FAST) or low (SLOW) locomotor stimulant response to ethanol have been found to differ in response to drugs with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-ergic actions. Reverse selection produced lines that are similar in sensitivity to ethanol stimulation (r-FAST and r-SLOW) and provided a unique model for testing hypotheses about shared genetic influence on sensitivity to ethanol and GABAergic drugs. FAST mice were more stimulated than SLOW mice by all drugs tested: ethanol, methanol, n-propanol, t-butanol, pentobarbital, diazepam, and allopregnanolone. In contrast, r-FAST and r-SLOW mice differed in sensitivity to only a few isolated drug doses. Locomotor responses of each reverse-selected line were significantly different from the responses of their respective forward-selected line for all drugs. Halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs) may undergo reduction reactions at the corroded pipe wall in drinking water distribution systems consisting of cast or ductile iron pipe. Iron pipe corrosion products were obtained from several locations within two drinking water distribution systems. Crystalline-phase composition of freeze-dried corrosion solids was analyzed using X-ray diffraction, and ferrous and ferric iron contents were determined via multiple extraction methods. Batch experiments demonstrated that trichloronitromethane (TCNM), a non-regulated DBP, is rapidly reduced in the presence of pipe corrosion solids and that dissolved oxygen (DO) slows the reaction. The water-soluble iron content of the pipe solids is the best predictor of TCNM reaction rate constant. These results indicate that highly reactive DBPs that are able to compete with oxygen and residual disinfectant for ferrous iron may be attenuated via abiotic reduction in drinking water distribution systems.  相似文献

The effects of methylphenidate on the academic performance and classroom behavior of 45 adolescents with attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity were studied. During a 6-week, placebo-controlled medication assessment in the context of a summer treatment program, participants received a double-blind, crossover trial of 3 doses of methylphenidate. Dependent measures included note-taking quality, quiz and worksheet scores, written language usage and productivity, teacher ratings, on-task and disruptive behavior, and homework completion. Group data showed positive effects of methylphenidate on academic measures; however, the greatest benefit came with the lowest dose. Although additional benefit did occur for some participants with higher doses, the largest increment of change usually occurred between the placebo and 10-mg dose. Many adolescents did not experience added benefit with increased dosages, and in some cases they experienced deterioration. Guidelines for assessment of medication effects are discussed. The primary aim of this study was to investigate the ways in which therapists-in-training construct and use mental representations of their relationships with their supervisors in the service of their own professional development. A total of 115 trainees (75% of whom were psychodynamically oriented) completed The Supervisory Representation Inventory, a network of measures designed to assess the forms, functions, and phenomenological properties of internalized representations of that relationship. Results indicate that supervisees tend to evoke representations of their supervisors' spoken words, vocal qualities, and the settings in which they have met; that they evoke these representations to better formulate clinical interventions, especially those perceived as painful or difficult for patients to hear; and that these representations are especially likely to occur when patients behave in ways consistent with a supervisor's view or, when the supervisee is alone and thinking about a patient that has been discussed in supervision. Findings support the hypothesis that representations of the verbal and nonverbal aspects of the supervisory dialogue play an integral role in the acquisition of the skills and professional identity of a psychotherapist. Logotherapy is based on the meaning-focused existential philosophy of Viktor E. Frankl (1905-1997). Numerous mental health professionals have been inspired by his most popular book, Man's Search for Meaning; however, many are unfamiliar with the depth of Frankl's work. The purpose of this article is to discuss the tenets of logotherapy, including fundamental concepts, applicability and techniques, roles of the therapist, and assessment tools and new research findings. Logotherapy can readily be integrated with techniques that mental health professionals frequently use, and thus it has much to offer mental health professionals regardless of their theoretical orientation. The case-study research method is popular across various disciplines; however, critics of the method argue that results from this form of research are applicable only to the case studied and cannot be generalized further. In the field of construction engineering and management (CEM), the number of papers employing case-study research methods over the past decade has increased substantially. As the method proliferates, the question arises: are CEM case studies being performed with sufficient validity and reliability to meet the burden of proof to generalize from the case-study findings? Meeting the burden of proof is particularly critical in CEM because of the unique, site-based nature of the projects and industry. This paper presents a review of 156 papers employing case studies published in the Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, of which the writers identified 33 theory-building case-study-method papers. This subset of theory-building papers was examined to induce a set of requirements and guidelines derived from these case-study research efforts to aid researchers in meeting the burden of proof. The writers anticipate that more methodologically consistent and comprehensive case-study research will yield new lines of inquiry and rich theoretical models that enhance and expand CEM research.  相似文献
