It is shown that, particularly for terrestrial cellular telephony, the interference-suppression feature of CDMA (code division multiple access) can result in a many-fold increase in capacity over analog and even over competing digital techniques. A single-cell system, such as a hubbed satellite network, is addressed, and the basic expression for capacity is developed. The corresponding expressions for a multiple-cell system are derived. and the distribution on the number of users supportable per cell is determined. It is concluded that properly augmented and power-controlled multiple-cell CDMA promises a quantum increase in current cellular capacity  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to evaluate the clinical and research literature on professionally-led support groups for cancer patients and to propose an approach that would address patients' needs from diagnosis through survivorship. METHOD: Computerized and manual searches, including Medline and Psychlit searches, were completed for reviews of the literature. Twelve research studies were identified that met our criteria for in-depth review. A clinical model emerged from discussions of an oncology study group based on theoretical formulations and clinical experience with oncology patients. RESULTS: We found that recent research suggests that professionally-led support groups are increasing in number and that participation in such groups seems to enhance patients' quality, and possibly even quantity, of survival. Despite this, little effort has been made to determine what type of group may be appropriate for which patients and when in their course of care. CONCLUSIONS: If psychosocial intervention, in the form of professionally-led support groups for cancer patients, is to be more effective, it should be guided by a model which takes into consideration the changing needs and concerns of patients over the course of illness and, in many cases, recovery. The authors present an outline delineating what such a model might entail.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: It is commonly believed that the full moon exerts an influence on violence and aggression in psychiatric settings. The literature to date is contentious. This study used a robust methodology to examine the hypothesis that there was an increased frequency of violent and aggressive behaviour among hospitalised psychiatric clients at the time of the full moon. METHOD: Prospective data were collected in five inpatient psychiatric settings across the Northern Sydney Area Health Service. Morrison's hierarchy of violence and aggression was used to rate behaviour. Lunar phases were clearly defined and Poisson regression used to examine relationships between lunar phase and violence. Extraneous temporal variation was considered. RESULTS: No significant relationship was found between total violence and aggression or level of violence and aggression and any phase of the moon. CONCLUSION: Future research could profitably examine the implications of a belief in the lunar effect among health workers in the face of evidence that no relationship exists between violence, aggression and the lunar cycle.  相似文献

A comprehensive series of time-related behavioral, physiological and cerebral metabolic studies was conducted using conscious Sprague-Dawley rats to discern the anti-endothelin (ET) properties of the specific ETA receptor antagonist, FR139317. Endothelin-1 (9 pmol given by injection into one lateral ventricle, i.c.v.) produced convulsions, acute arterial hypertension, arterial hyperglycemia, and hyperventilation. Brain structures close to the i.c.v. site of injection, such as the caudate nucleus, lateral septal nucleus, corpus callosum and hippocampal CA3 medial lamellae, as well as 14 other individual structures, displayed moderate-to-intense levels of metabolic activation after endothelin. Data were assessed quantitatively by means of the autoradiographic [14C]deoxyglucose technique combined with image analysis. Neural circuits in the efferent projection paths of the stimulated forebrain structures, such as the midbrain oculomotor complex, amygdaloid nuclei, substantia nigra pars reticulata and caudal subicular subregions of the hippocampal formation, were stimulated focally by endothelin. Specific medullary nuclei and cerebellar cortical subregions displayed high rates of glucose metabolism following endothelin injection at the time of maximum behavioral and physiological stimulation. I.c.v. treatment with > or = 14 nmol FR139317 before endothelin significantly inhibited the effects produced by the peptide. At the highest dose of FR139317 (28 nmol), there was only mild behavioral stimulation following endothelin injection, and hypermetabolic responses in the brain were abolished except in two specific areas of the cerebellar cortex (approx 40% increases in metabolic activity in the copula pyramis and paramedian lobule). The results indicate that the cerebral stimulatory effects of i.c.v. endothelin are mediated by the A type of endothelin receptor. By itself, i.c.v. FR139317 had no effects on the parameters assessed. Further evaluation of FR139317 is warranted as a possible therapeutic agent for neuropathologies suspected of deriving from central neural or vascular stimulation by endothelin, such as aneurysmal vasospasm, ischemia, excitotoxicity, and peptide-mediated epilepsies.  相似文献

While the osteopenia associated with oestrogen deficiency is thought to arise from a relative defect in bone formation with respect to resorption, oestrogen administration itself leads to a decrease, rather than an increase, in bone formation. This decrease in bone formation, which arises from oestrogen's inhibitory effect on bone turnover, presumably masks any underlying tendency of oestrogen treatment towards stimulation of bone formation. To investigate this further, we have examined the early effect of discontinuing the administration of oestradiol-17 beta (OE2; 40 micrograms/kg) on bone formation indices in ovariectomized 13-week-old rats, before the turnover-induced increase in formation occurs. Histomorphometric indices were assessed at the proximal tibial metaphysis 0, 7, 10, 13 and 16 days following discontinuation of OE2 treatment. Measurements of body weight, uterine weight and longitudinal growth rate confirmed that there were rapid effects of OE2 deficiency on these parameters. We could detect no significant increase in bone resorption, as measured by osteoclast surface and number, until 16 days after ending treatment with OE2; this was coincidental with a reduction in bone volume. Shorter periods of OE2 deficiency were associated with a marked decrease in bone formation, as assessed by dynamic histomorphometric indices. This inhibition of bone formation was largely due to a reduction in double fluorochrome-labeled trabecular surfaces, which were decreased by approximately 70%. We conclude that ending OE2 administration in ovariectomized rats caused a striking decrease in trabecular bone formation, if such indices are assessed prior to the subsequent turnover-induced increase in formation.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

It has been reported that boron (B) deprivation reversibly lowers plasma estradiol levels in postmenopausal women. In order to establish whether this reflects disturbances in the estrogen catabolic pathway and in particular in catechol estrogen metabolism, the influence of dietary B on the catabolism of [3H]estradiol-17 beta has been studied in ovariectomized rats. Rats were given diets containing < 0.1 or 40 mg B.kg-1, ovariectomized and then infused with [3H]estradiol-17 beta using osmotic pumps. Analysis of urine samples for conjugated, catechol and non-catechol estrogens did not reveal any effects of B on the recovery or the metabolic fate of tritium from the infused estradiol. These results do not therefore support the proposal that B influences estrogen catabolism by interacting with catechol estrogens.  相似文献
