Univariate decision trees are classifiers currently used in many data mining applications. This classifier discovers partitions in the input space via hyperplanes that are orthogonal to the axes of attributes, producing a model that can be understood by human experts. One disadvantage of univariate decision trees is that they produce complex and inaccurate models when decision boundaries are not orthogonal to axes. In this paper we introduce the Fisher’s Tree, it is a classifier that takes advantage of dimensionality reduction of Fisher’s linear discriminant and uses the decomposition strategy of decision trees, to come up with an oblique decision tree. Our proposal generates an artificial attribute that is used to split the data in a recursive way.The Fisher’s decision tree induces oblique trees whose accuracy, size, number of leaves and training time are competitive with respect to other decision trees reported in the literature. We use more than ten public available data sets to demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. 相似文献

Transient neonatal diabetes mellitus occurs in growth-retarded infants, has an incidence of 1 in 400000 live births and has been associated with both paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 6 and paternal duplications of 6q. We analysed samples from our cohort of patients with transient neonatal diabetes mellitus for uniparental disomy of chromosome 6 using polymorphic microsatellite repeat analysis. We report here the fifth case of paternal uniparental disomy of chromosome 6 associated with classic transient neonatal diabetes mellitus and estimate that uniparental disomy of chromosome 6 accounts for approximately one fifth of cases of transient neonatal diabetes mellitus. 相似文献

A recent focus in health care is to develop a seamless transition for patients between the variety of health care agencies with whom they interact. The continuum of care for patients with stroke is complex and many levels of care are required, from acute intervention through to rehabilitation and reintegration into the community. A group of nurses from a variety of agencies in Southwestern Ontario received funding from the Ontario province Wide Nursing Project to effect a desirable change in the way nurses care for the stroke patient. This article describes the Ontario Province Wide Nursing project and the process of and challenges in developing a nursing model for stroke. The development of a nursing model for stroke patients and their families involved conducting nursing, and patient and family focus groups to identify key issues. Thirty-eight nurses participated in the nursing focus groups, and 8 patients and 18 family members participated in the patient and family focus groups. The common themes were the need for improved communication and the need to better prepare patients and families for the many transitions they experience during their recovery from stroke. A Stroke Education Record, which identifies a comprehensive list of potential learning needs of stroke patients and their families, and a Stroke Education and Resource Guide, which provides a reference for nurses, were developed and will be implemented in September 1998. Implementation of the model included a workshop, staff inservices, a self-learning package, and unit displays. Evaluation of the model will include nursing and patient and family focus groups, a chart review, written nursing evaluations, and patient and family telephone interviews. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Family resources and coping skills are important to adaptation to pediatric chronic illness. Psychological and educational interventions have been found to enhance the coping skills of children with juvenile rheumatic disease (JRD) and their families. We examined the efficacy of a 3-day family retreat as a multidisciplinary, comprehensive treatment. METHODS: Children with JRD and their caregivers completed questionnaires assessing the children's behavioral and emotional functioning, pain, strain on caregivers' work and leisure activities, and caregivers' psychological distress before and 6 months after the family retreat. Principal caregivers were both parents for 16 children, mothers only for 10 children, and an aunt for 1 child. RESULTS: Improvements were found in children's emotional functioning, strain on caregivers' work, and strain on caregivers' leisure activities. Reductions in reported pain were not consistently revealed. CONCLUSIONS: Family retreats are an efficacious, multidisciplinary approach to helping families of children with JRD cope with the disease and its manifestations. Importantly, retreats offer a comprehensive intervention package that might not be available to families on an individual basis. 相似文献

Numerous studies confirm that genes in the chicken major histocompatibility complex exert major genetic control over host resistance to autoimmune, viral, bacterial, and parasitic diseases. Examples of major histocompatibility complex associations with traits of growth and reproduction in the chicken are also available. Thus, the major effects of the major histocompatibility complex on the economically important traits of disease resistance, growth, and reproduction make the major histocompatibility complex a valuable subject for intensive analysis in agricultural species. This paper examines, as a model for integration of genetics and immunology, the research on the chicken major histocompatibility complex, which confirmed its role in genetic control of disease resistance, focusing on Marek's disease, a virally induced cancer. Current knowledge of associations of the chicken major histocompatibility complex with specific disease resistance, immune response, and other economic traits are selectively reviewed. Use of major histocompatibility complex typing in the poultry industry, including speculation about future applications, is presented. 相似文献

Porphyromonas gingivalis, a periodontal pathogen can invade primary cultures of gingival epithelial cells. This invasion was significantly inhibited (74-81%) by thapsigargin and 1,2-bis(2-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N1,N1-tetraacetic acid, acetoxymethyl ester (BAPTA/AM), but not by EDTA or amiloride. Release of Ca2+ from an intracellular store and the subsequent increase in cytosolic [Ca2+] may, therefore, be involved in the invasion process, while Ca2+ influx is not. Moreover, cytosolic [Ca2+] was found to increase transiently in about 30% of gingival epithelial cells acutely exposed to P. gingivalis, but not in unexposed cells, or in cells exposed to noninvasive Escherichia coli. These findings indicate that P. gingivalis invasion of epithelial cells is correlated with activation of [Ca2+]-dependent host cell signaling systems. 相似文献

Porphyromonas gingivalis can induce its uptake by host epithelial cells; however, the nature and role of the P. gingivalis molecules involved in this invasion process have yet to be determined. In this study, modulation of secreted P. gingivalis proteins following association with gingival epithelial cells was investigated. Western immunoblot analysis showed that contact with epithelial cells or epithelial cell growth media induces P. gingivalis 33277 to secrete several proteins with molecular masses between 35 and 95 kDa. Secretion of the Arg-gingipain and Lys-gingipain proteases was repressed under these conditions. The contact-induced secreted protein profile was altered in Arg-gingipain-deficient and Lys-gingipain-deficient mutants, indicating a possible role for these proteases in the secretion pathway. The P. gingivalis contact-dependent protein secretion pathway differs to some extent from type III protein secretion pathways in enteric pathogens, as a gene homologous to the invA family genes was not detected in P. gingivalis. The secreted proteins of P. gingivalis may play a role in the interactions of the organism with host cells. 相似文献

This paper presents the application of a component-based Grid middleware system for processing extremely large images obtained from digital microscopy devices. We have developed parallel, out-of-core techniques for different classes of data processing operations employed on images from confocal microscopy scanners. These techniques are combined into a data preprocessing and analysis pipeline using the component-based middleware system. The experimental results show that: 1) our implementation achieves good performance and can handle very large datasets on high-performance Grid nodes, consisting of computation and/or storage clusters and 2) it can take advantage of Grid nodes connected over high-bandwidth wide-area networks by combining task and data parallelism. 相似文献

Ultrahigh nonlinear tapered fiber and planar rib Chalcogenide waveguides have been developed to enable highspeed all-optical signal processing in compact, low-loss optical devices through the use of four-wave mixing (FWM) and cross-phase modulation (XPM) via the ultra fast Kerr effect. Tapering a commercial As2Se3 fiber is shown to reduce its effective core area and enhance the Kerr nonlinearity thereby enabling XPM wavelength conversion of a 40 Gb/s signal in a shorter 16-cm length device that allows a broader wavelength tuning range due to its smaller net chromatic dispersion. Progress toward photonic chip-scale devices is shown by fabricating As2S3 planar rib waveguides exhibiting nonlinearity up to 2080 W-1ldr km-1 and losses as low as 0.05 dB/cm. The material's high refractive index, ensuring more robust confinement of the optical mode, permits a more compact serpentine-shaped rib waveguide of 22.5 cm length on a 7-cm- size chip, which is successfully applied to broadband wavelength conversion of 40-80 Gb/s signals by XPM. A shorter 5-cm length planar waveguide proves most effective for all-optical time-division demultiplexing of a 160 Gb/s signal by FWM and analysis shows its length is near optimum for maximizing FWM in consideration of its dispersion and loss. 相似文献
