To shed light onto the relationship between sparging conditions and fouling control in submerged hollow fiber membranes, the effects of bubble size and frequency on the hydrodynamic conditions induced in membrane system were studied. Two general classes of bubbles were considered: coarse (0.75–2.5 mL) and pulse (100–500 mL). The power transferred (Ptrans) onto membranes could be used to characterise the multiple effects induced under different sparging conditions. Ptrans is proportional to root mean square of shear stress (τrms), the area of zone of influence (i.e. the fraction in the system where high velocity and high vorticity (turbulence) are induced by the bubble) and their rise velocity. At a given sparging rate, the power transferred onto membranes was less with coarse bubble sparging than pulse bubble sparging and increased with the size of pulse bubbles. For all cases, the power transfer efficiency was consistently higher for pulse bubble sparging than for coarse bubble sparging. The power transfer efficiency to the system was greatest for the small pulse bubbles considered when a small amount of power is required for fouling control. However, when fouling is extensive, large pulse bubbles may be required to generate the required amount of power for fouling control.  相似文献

Conventional water pipeline leak detection surveys employ labour-intensive acoustic techniques, which are usually expensive and not amenable for continuous monitoring of distribution systems. Many previous studies attempted to address these limitations by proposing and evaluating a myriad of continuous, long-term monitoring techniques. However, these techniques have difficulty to identify leaks in the presence of pipeline system complexities (e.g. T-joints), offered limited compatibility with popular pipe materials (e.g. PVC), and were in some cases intrusive in nature. Recently, a non-intrusive pipeline surface vibration-based leak detection technique has been proposed to address some of the limitations of the previous studies. This new technique involves continuous monitoring of the change in the cross-spectral density of surface vibration measured at discrete locations along the pipeline. Previously, the capabilities of this technique have been demonstrated through an experimental campaign carried out on a simple pipeline set-up. This paper presents a follow-up evaluation of the new technique in a real-size experimental looped pipeline system located in a laboratory with complexities, such as junctions, bends and varying pipeline sizes. The results revealed the potential feasibility of the proposed technique to detect and assess the onset of single or multiple leaks in a complex system.  相似文献

The anionic polymerization of butadiene monomer in cyclohexane at 20°C gave polybutadiene (PB50) with a narrow molecular weight distribution. This polymer was allowed to react with 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione via the ‘ene’ reaction to the extent of 5, 10 and 15%. These functionalized polymers were reacted with N-phthaloyl-L -leucine acid chloride in the presence of pyridine at room temperature. These reactions lead to the replacement of N-H by an optically active group, and the resulting polymers became optically active. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is unresponsive to typical hormonal treatments, causing it to be one of the deadliest forms of breast cancer. Investigating alternative therapies to increase survival rates for this disease is essential. The goal of this study was to assess cytotoxicity and apoptosis mechanisms of prenylated stilbenoids in TNBC cells. The prenylated stilbenoids arachidin-1 (A-1) and arachidin-3 (A-3) are analogs of resveratrol (RES) produced in peanut upon biotic stress. The anticancer activity of A-1 and A-3 isolated from peanut hairy root cultures was determined in TNBC cell lines MDA-MB-231 and MDA-MB-436. After 24 h of treatment, A-1 exhibited higher cytotoxicity than A-3 and RES with approximately 11-fold and six-fold lower IC50, respectively, in MDA-MB-231 cells, and nine-fold and eight-fold lower IC50, respectively, in MDA-MB-436 cells. A-1 did not show significant cytotoxicity in the non-cancerous cell line MCF-10A. While A-1 blocked cell division in G2-M phases in the TNBC cells, it did not affect cell division in MCF-10A cells. Furthermore, A-1 induced caspase-dependent apoptosis through the intrinsic pathway by activating caspase-9 and PARP cleavage, and inhibiting survivin. In conclusion, A-1 merits further research as a potential lead molecule for the treatment of TNBC.  相似文献

Precise prediction of protein secondary structures from the associated amino acids sequence is of great importance in bioinformatics and yet a challenging task for machine learning algorithms. As a major step toward predicting the ultimate three dimensional structures, the secondary structure assignment specifies the protein function. Considering a multilayer perceptron neural network, pruned for optimum size of hidden layers, as the reference network, advanced kinds of recurrent neural network (RNN) are devised in this article to enhance the secondary structure prediction. To better model the strong correlations between secondary structure elements, types of modular reciprocal recurrent neural networks (MRR-NN) are examined. Additionally, to take into account the long-range interactions between amino acids in formation of the secondary structure, bidirectional RNN are investigated. A multilayer bidirectional recurrent neural network (MBR-NN) is finally applied to capture the predominant long-term dependencies. Eventually, a modular prediction system based on the interactive combination of the MRR-NN and MBR-NN boosts the percentage accuracy (Q3) up to 76.91% and augments the segment overlap (SOV) up to 68.13% when tested on the PSIPRED dataset. The coupling effects of the secondary structure types as well as the sequential information of amino acids along the protein chain can be well cast by the integration of the MRR-NN and the MBR-NN.  相似文献

In many physical systems, the system's full state cannot be measured. An observer is designed to reconstruct the state from measurements. Disturbances often contribute to the dynamics of the system, and the designed observer must account for them. In this paper, a modified sliding-mode observer (SMO), a robust observer, is proposed that combines the efficiency of a nonlinear observer with the robustness of an SMO. The estimation error is proven to converge to zero under natural assumptions. This improved observer is compared with an extended Kalman filter and an unscented Kalman filter, as well as a standard SMO for three different versions of heat equation: a linear, a quasi-linear, and a nonlinear heat equation. The comparisons are done with and without an external disturbance. The simulations show improved performance of the modified SMO over other observers.  相似文献

Three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TI) exhibit conventional parabolic bulk bands and protected Dirac surface states. A thorough investigation of the different transport channels provided by the bulk and surface carriers using macroscopic samples may provide a path toward accessing superior surface transport properties. Bi2Te3 materials make promising 3D TI models; however, due to their complicated defect chemistry, these materials have a high number of charge carriers in the bulk that dominate the transport, even as nanograined structures. To partially control the bulk charge carrier density, herein the synthesis of Te-enriched Bi2Te3 nanoparticles is reported. The resulting nanoparticles are compacted into nanograined pellets of varying porosity to tailor the surface-to-volume ratio, thereby emphasizing the surface transport channels. The nanograined pellets are characterized by a combination of resistivity, Hall- and magneto-conductance measurements together with (THz) time-domain reflectivity measurements. Using the Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) model, a characteristic coherence length of ≈200 nm is reported that is considerably larger than the diameter of the nanograins. The different contributions from the bulk and surface carriers are disentangled by THz spectroscopy, thus emphasizing the dominant role of the surface carriers. The results strongly suggest that the surface transport carriers have overcome the hindrance imposed by nanoparticle boundaries.  相似文献
