Two-dimensional integration of a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser and photodetectors for position sensing

Noncontact long-range position sensing is desirable for a number of applications. We have designed and fabricated a monolithically integrated vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and p-type/intrinsic/n-type (PIN) photodetectors for optical position sensing. Calculations using the reflection from a periodic metallic corrugation as a position gauge indicate resolution in the submicron regime. High device uniformity is obtained using novel fabrication techniques. We observe a threshold current of 0.52 mA for the VCSELs and a detector responsivity of 0.38 A/W at 840 nm. The optical cross talk between VCSELs and detectors is also quantified.

Moisture adsorption isotherms of yew wood (<Emphasis Type="Italic">Taxus baccata</Emphasis> L.)

Adsorption isotherm was obtained to assess the hygroscopicity of yew wood using the Hailwood-Horrobin sorption theory. Yew wood showed very low EMC values in the whole range of relative humidities. An interesting point was that the adsorption isotherms of the yew wood were almost identical to that of pine wood modified with 15.8% acetic anhydride.     

Corporate venture capital programs of European electric utilities: Motives,trends, strategies and challenges

The forthcoming paradigmatic changes in the energy sector point to innovation as being one of the main drivers of growth for utilities. In search for their future business model, open innovation and, in particular the collaboration with startups, is recognized as a means to keep the leading position in a changing industry. In this respect, utilities deriving from the European market, which is considered as a reference case for many other regions in the world, follow the 4th wave of Corporate Venture Capital (CVC) by initiating relevant programs.The aim of the paper is to examine the state of CVC programs of the European electric utilities and, more broadly, to examine their motives, to identify trends and strategies and to discuss the associated challenges. As our current knowledge on the subject is limited, the purpose of the study is to investigate this evolving phenomenon. To this end, a multiple case-study methodology is used by examining the CVC programs of four major European utilities (E.ON, EDF, Enel and Iberdrola). Findings suggest that CVC programs are now integrated in an Open Innovation approach and thus complemented by numerous other initiatives. All CVCs conduct investments tightly linked to the parent’s firm operations and the majority of them have more of a strategic (than financial) rationale in their investments. As a result, the cooperation between startups and the parent company is of great importance and poses a number of challenges related to the development of initiatives that would create linkages, achieve the alignment of the time frame and set up mutually beneficial commercial collaborations, including the ‘if’ and ‘how’ startups may work with competitors.     

Decay resistance in ground stake-test of acetylated OSB after six years of testing

Acetylated OSB stakes were tested in ground contact in Western Greece. Two levels of acetylation were used, a high and a low level of 20.4 and 11.2% acetyl content, respectively. The results showed, that acetylation at high level imparts excellent protection against decay, even after six years of testing.     

The effect of acetylation on the Janka hardness of pine wood

This paper addressed the effect of chemical modification with acetic anhydride on Janka hardness of pine wood, a less studied mechanical property. It was found that acetylation did not significantly affect the hardness of wood.     

Output feedback control of dissipative PDE systems with partial sensor information based on adaptive model reduction

We address the problem of control of spatially distributed processes in the presence of measurement constraints. Specifically, we assume the availability of sensors that measure part of the state spatial profile. The measurements are utilized for the derivation and on‐demand update of reduced order models (ROM) based on an extension of the adaptive proper orthogonal decomposition (APOD) method using a snapshot reconstruction technique. The proposed Gappy‐APOD methodology constructs locally accurate low‐dimensional ROM thus resulting in a computationally efficient alternative to using a large‐dimensional ROM with global validity. Based on the low‐dimensional ROM and continuous measurements available from point sensors a Lyapunov‐based static output feedback controller is subsequently designed. The proposed controller design method is illustrated on an unstable process modeled by the Kuramoto‐Sivashinsky equation, when the designed controller successfully stabilizes the process even in the presence of model uncertainty. © 2012 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 59: 747–760, 2013
