1. Using single fibre vagal afferent recording, we have studied the behavior of slowly adapting stretch receptors located in an isolated, in situ, segment of the trachea in dogs. Responses to positive and negative steady and oscillating transmural pressures were investigated. 2. Seventy-eight per cent of the receptors studied were tonically active at resting tracheal volume. Ninety per cent showed a more pronounced response to positive than to negative transmural pressures. 3. During pressure oscillations the majority of the receptors had a higher discharge frequency at any given pressure during the ascending phase of the pressure wave than at the same pressure under static conditions. During most of the ensuing descent of pressure toward zero the discharge frequency led transmural pressure. 4. With increasing frequency of oscillation the differences from the static responses increased (dP/dt sensitivity), especially during the ascending limb of the pressure oscillation (rectifying behavior). 5. In a small number of receptors, discharge frequency lagged behind transmural pressure or was in phase with it ("no loop" pattern). 6. In three cases the same receptor exhibited dP/dt sensitivity during positive pressure oscillations, whereas discharge frequency lagged behind pressure during negative pressure oscillations. This indicates that the lack of dP/dt sensitivity exhibited under negative pressure conditions does not represent an intrinsic property of these receptors, but reflects some aspect of their mechanical arrangement within the airway wall. 7. We describe an active-set, dual-feasible Schur-complement method for quadratic programming (QP) with positive definite Hessians. The formulation of the QP being solved
is general and flexible, and is appropriate for many different application areas. Moreover, the specialized structure of the
QP is abstracted away behind a fixed KKT matrix called Ko and other problem matrices, which naturally leads to an object-oriented software implementation. Updates to the working set
of active inequality constraints are facilitated using a dense Schur complement, which we expect to remain small. Here, the
dual Schur complement method requires the projected Hessian to be positive definite for every working set considered by the
algorithm. Therefore, this method is not appropriate for all QPs. While the Schur complement approach to linear algebra is
very flexible with respect to allowing exploitation of problem structure, it is not as numerically stable as approaches using
a QR factorization. However, we show that the use of fixed-precision iterative refinement helps to dramatically improve the
numerical stability of this Schur complement algorithm. The use of the object-oriented QP solver implementation is demonstrated
on two different application areas with specializations in each area; large-scale model predictive control (MPC) and reduced-space
successive quadratic programming (with several different representations for the reduced Hessian). These results demonstrate
that the QP solver can exploit application-specific structure in a computationally efficient and fairly robust manner as compared

Using self-assembly from colloidal suspensions of polystyrene latex spheres we prepared well-ordered templates. By electrochemical
deposition of magnetic and superconducting metals in the pores of such templates highly ordered magnetic and superconducting
anti-dot nano-structures with 3D architectures were created. Further developments of this template preparation method allow
us to obtain dot arrays and even more complicated structures. In magnetic anti-dot arrays we observe a large increase in coercive
field produced by nanoscale (50–1000nm) holes. We also find the coercive field to demonstrate an oscillatory dependence on
film thickness. In magnetic dot arrays we have explored the genesis of 3D magnetic vortices and determined the critical dot
size. Superconducting Pb anti-dot arrays show pronounced Little-Parks oscillations in Tc and matching effects in magnetization and magnetic susceptibility. The spherical shape of the holes results in significantly
reduced pinning strength as compared to standard lithographic samples. Our results demonstrate that self-assembly template
methods are emerging as a viable, low cost route to prepare sub-micron structures. 相似文献

This study examined the effects of uncertain model boundary conditions on dissolved oxygen (DO) predictions for the lower Truckee River, Nevada using an augmented version of the EPA’s Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program Version 5 (WASP5) that included periphyton, or attached algae, in eutrophication kinetics. Uncertainty analyses were performed on selected organic nitrogen (ON) and carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand boundary conditions using Monte Carlo techniques. The stochastic model was run using boundary concentrations assigned from observed probability distributions. Ranges of simulated values were used to construct confidence intervals, the magnitudes of which indicated the uncertainty associated with model predictions. Uncertainty in agricultural ditch return concentrations had minimal effects on in-stream model predictions, as predicted values of daily minimum and maximum DOs, daily average ON, and periphyton biomass all failed to show significant variability as a result of ditch concentration uncertainty. This result indicates that while ditch return nutrient loads are not trivial, their exact concentrations are not needed to make relatively accurate predictions of in-stream DO. However, uncertainty in the upstream ON boundary did result in significant uncertainty during summer months with regard to in-stream model predictions of ON, periphyton biomass, and DO. The model is clearly more sensitive to changes in this boundary than to changes in agricultural ditch concentrations. 相似文献

A magnetoresistive heat switch has been developed to improve the performance of our flight-worthy cryogen-free ADR. We have characterised the switch’s thermal conductivity in the temperature range 0.3-4 K under an applied magnetic field of 1.8 T for two tungsten samples of different purity. The results are discussed relating to the key aspects of semi-classical magnetoresistance theory. We show that crystal purity has a strong effect on switch performance and magnetoresistive effect. Our findings are verified by comparison to results obtained by other authors. The measured switching ratio for our best sample is 1.75 × 104 at 1.5 K and 1.51 × 104 at 4.26 K. The lattice conductivity remains dominated by the electronic conductivity in the investigated range of temperatures under an applied magnetic field of 1.8 T. In order for the lattice conductivity to dominate a purity of >99.999% would be required. 相似文献

Mesoporous (H(I)-ePt) platinum microelectrodes electrodeposited from the hexagonal (H(I)) lyotropic liquid crystalline phase are shown to be excellent amperometric sensors for the detection of hydrogen peroxide over a wide range of concentrations. Good reproducibility, high precision, and accuracy of measurements are demonstrated. Mesoporous microelectrodes retain the high rates of mass transport typical of conventional microelectrodes, and their high real surface area greatly enhances their catalytic activity. This unique combination of properties overcomes the limitations of previous amperometric hydrogen peroxide sensors and yields outstanding qualitative and quantitative results. 相似文献

This article responds to a critique by H. C. Barrett, D. A. Frederick, M. G. Haselton, and R. Kurzban (see record 2006-10940-009), wherein it is argued that manipulations of cognitive constraints cannot be used to test general evolutionary hypotheses regarding the architecture of mind. In making this argument, Barrett et al. focus on what they believe to be faulty logic in D. DeSteno, M. Y. Bartlett, J. Braverman, and P. Salovey's (see record 2002-18731-006) use of such techniques to examine proposed sex differences in jealousy. In presenting their argument, however, Barrett et al. appear to disregard central findings presented in DeSteno et al. (2002) and, in so doing, fail to grasp the interrelations among findings that might readily address their concerns. Here, the authors present arguments for why and when manipulations of cognitive resources may prove useful in investigating evolved psychological mechanisms and, in so doing, situate their use within the ongoing debate concerning evolved sex differences in jealousy. Nutrient loads enter the lower Truckee River of western Nevada, affecting the growth of attached algae (periphyton) which causes depressed nighttime dissolved oxygen (DO) levels. The lower Truckee River is home to the endangered cui-ui and threatened Lahontan cut-throat trout, with DO standards being established to in part protect these species. Hydrodynamics, nutrient concentrations, periphyton biomass, and DO data spanning August 2000–December 2001 were used to calibrate and verify a modified version of the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program Version 5 (WASP5). Under typical loading conditions the periphyton community is nitrogen limited, however nitrogen loading from an upstream wastewater treatment facility increased greatly during the analysis period due to approved site construction activities (discharge permit excursion) causing the periphyton community to temporarily become phosphorus limited. The developed modeling approach, with limited calibration, was able to accurately track dynamic system responses. Removing the impact of the noted discharge permit excursion resulted in a minimum computed DO value of 4.13?mg/L, occurring at the downstream end of the modeling domain on August 8, 2001. Additionally removing the impact of all nutrient loads from area agriculture resulted in a predicted minimum DO value of 4.54?mg/L, while also shifting its location significantly upstream and its timing to April 26, 2001. Meeting all prescribed DO standards required establishing a minimum in-stream flow value of 1.81?m3/s (64.0?ft3/s) downstream of Derby Dam. 相似文献
