Knowledge of contaminant levels in Greenland biota has increased substantially in recent years, particularly for persistent organic pollutants. This paper reviews and updates knowledge of spatial and temporal trends of Cd, Hg and organochlorines (PCBs, DDTs, HCHs, HCB and chlordane-related compounds) in Greenland terrestrial, freshwater and marine biota. The most comprehensive studies of spatial trends of Cd and Hg in the terrestrial ecosystem concern lichens, with relatively complete coverage, and caribou (Rangifer tarandus), with coverage mainly in different regions of central West Greenland and Southwest Greenland. The Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) is the only freshwater organism for which studies of spatial trends of Hg levels have been completed. Information on spatial trends of Cd and Hg in the marine environment is available from studies of fish, seabirds, ringed seals (Phoca hispida) and polar bears (Ursus maritimus). Geographical patterns of Cd and Hg in Greenland biota were not always consistent among different species or different studies. In landlocked Arctic char the concentrations of Hg decreased from south to north. In marine animals levels of Hg tended to be higher in East Greenland than in West Greenland and Cd levels were highest in biota from Disko Island in central West Greenland. The observed regional differences are difficult to explain but in most cases the causes appear to be natural rather than anthropogenic. Only a few time series covering the last 20 years exist for Cd and Hg. The one time series indicating a temporal change is for ringed seals in Northwest Greenland, which shows an increasing trend of Hg and a decreasing trend of Cd since 1984. Whether the changes reflect anthropogenic inputs, seal behaviour or other environmental factors is unknown. The most significant new insights have concerned organochlorines. In general, levels of these compounds were very low in terrestrial biota compared to marine species. Concentrations in landlocked Arctic char were highest in Southeast Greenland and lowest in Northwest and Northeast Greenland. Marine species from East Greenland had consistently higher levels of SigmaPCB, SigmaDDT and SigmaHCH than marine species from West Greenland. Very few data exist to evaluate temporal changes of organochlorine levels in Greenland biota, and this is the most significant knowledge gap at present. The most pronounced change observed was a decrease of 78% in SigmaPCB levels in polar bears from East Greenland from 1990 to 2000. Levels of SigmaHCH in shorthorn sculpins (Myoxocephalus scorpius) and seals from both central West Greenland and central East Greenland appear to have decreased since 1994. A new technique for phase tracking in quantum cryptography systems is proposed that adjusts phase in an optimal way, using only as many photon counts as necessary. We derive an upper bound on the number of photons that need to be registered during phase adjustment to achieve a given phase accuracy. It turns out that most quantum cryptosystems can successfully track phase on a single-photon level, entirely with software, without any additional hardware components or extensive phase-stabilization measures. To analyse the relationship between research group size and scientific productivity within the highly cooperative research environment characteristic of contemporary biomedical science, an investigation of Norwegian Microbiology was undertaken. By an author-gated retrieval from ISI's database National Science Indicators on Diskette (NSIOD), of journal articles published by Norwegian scientists involved in microbiological research during the period 1992–1996, a total of 976 microbiological and 938 non-microbiological articles, by 3,486 authors, were obtained. Functional research groups were defined bibliometrically on the basis of co-authorship, yielding a total of 180 research groups varying in size from one author/one article to 180 authors/83 articles (all authors associated with a group during the whole five-year period were included, hence the large group size). Most of Norwegian microbiological research (73% of the microbiology articles) appears to be performed by specialist groups (with 70% of their production as microbiology), the remainder being published by groups with a broader biomedical research profile (who were responsible for 95% of the non-microbiological articles). The productivity (articles per capita) showed only moderate (Poisson-distributed) variability between groups, and was remarkably constant across all subfields, at about 0.1 article per author per year. Unknown input observers (UIOs) are observers that have stable error dynamics that are independent of unknown inputs. This paper studies such observers for non-linear systems, and shows that the error dynamics for a non-linear UIO has the same structure as the error dynamics of a non-linear observer without unknown inputs. This result is first used to provide synthesis inequalities for UIOs for a class of non-linear systems, and secondly, to inspire the design of an observer for estimation of vehicle lateral velocity on banked roads. 相似文献

This paper describes a nonlinear control structure known as a local controller network. The structure consists of a weighted combination of a number of individual controllers, each of which is valid locally in the state space of the plant. Local controller designs are based upon local models valid in operating regimes which do not necessarily contain any physical equilibria. Consequently, the transient performance can be improved. Some 'scheduling' variables determine the current operating regime, and a validity function is assigned to each local controller. A 'feedforward' component may be used in each local controller in order to compensate directly for the operating-point-dependent model offsets. The application of the local controller network approach to a nonlinear control problem, that of longitudinal vehicle dynamics control, is described. A stability analysis for the discrete-time local controller network is given in this paper and the results are compared with known theoretical guidelines for related control approaches such as gain scheduling and feedback linearization. 相似文献

In this paper we propose a new model for estimating the effective properties of regular hexagonal honeycombs. This model yields some new simple formulae which, in contrast to previous attempts, match the general invariant relations found by Vigdergauz in 1999. By comparing with numerical results, we also find some improved (but still simple) formulae which enable us to estimate the effective properties with an accuracy better than 1%, even for high density honeycombs. 相似文献
