The direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide from H2 and O2 using a range of supported Au–Pd alloy catalysts is compared for different supports using conditions previously identified as being optimal for hydrogen peroxide synthesis, i.e. low temperature (2 °C) using a water–methanol solvent mixture and short reaction time. Five supports are compared and contrasted, namely Al2O3, -Fe2O3, TiO2, SiO2 and carbon. For all catalysts the addition of Pd to the Au only catalyst increases the rate of hydrogen peroxide synthesis as well as the concentration of hydrogen peroxide formed. Of the materials evaluated, the carbon-supported Au–Pd alloy catalysts give the highest reactivity. The results show that the support can have an important influence on the synthesis of hydrogen peroxide from the direct reaction. The effect of the methanol–water solvent is studied in detail for the 2.5 wt% Au–2.5 wt% Pd/TiO2 catalyst and the ratio of methanol to water is found to have a major effect on the rate of hydrogen peroxide synthesis. The optimum mixture for this solvent system is 80 vol.% methanol with 20 vol.% water. However, the use of water alone is still effective albeit at a decreased rate. The effect of catalyst mass was therefore also investigated for the water and water–methanol solvents and the observed effect on the hydrogen peroxide productivity using water as a solvent is not considered to be due to mass transfer limitations. These results are of importance with respect to the industrial application of these Au–Pd catalysts.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that human monoclonal and polyclonal anticardiolipin antibodies have thrombogenic properties in vivo. Using such a model in which these antibodies have been shown to increase both the size of an induced thrombus and the duration of time in which such a clot lasts, we investigated whether hydroxychloroquine alters the dynamics of such thrombus formation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Three groups of nine mice were injected with purified immunoglobulin G (IgG) from a patient with the antiphospholipid syndrome (IgG-APS) and then fed with hydroxychloroquine at various doses (100, 6, and 3 mg/kg body wt). Three control groups of mice were also studied, including mice injected with IgG-APS and then fed with placebo, as well as two other groups injected with IgG from normal human serum and fed either hydroxychloroquine or placebo. A standardized thrombogenic injury was subsequently induced in the femoral vein of each mouse and the area (size) of thrombus measured as well as the total period of time that thrombus was present. Mice treated with hydroxychloroquine and IgG-APS showed significantly smaller thrombi that persisted for a shorter period of time compared with animals treated with IgG-APS and placebo. CONCLUSIONS: Hydroxychloroquine significantly diminished both thrombus size and total time of thrombus formation in mice previously injected with IgG-APS.  相似文献

Although filial therapy has traditionally been viewed as suitable for children of diverse cultures, there is limited research to support this perspective. This qualitative case study examined the perceived effectiveness of filial therapy for a Jamaican mother and the perceived effect on the mother-child relationship. Findings indicate that some aspects of filial therapy are congruent with the parenting practices and values of this Jamaican mother. The mother reported an increase in empathy, a heightened awareness of her child's needs, and a stronger relationship with her child. She expressed some difficulty with limit setting and tracking skills taught as part of the model. Future research directions include further examination of the compatibility of filial therapy with other Jamaican parents and the effectiveness of group filial therapy with Jamaican parents or other parents of Caribbean descent. The ability to display functional T-cell receptors (TCR) on the surface of bacteriophage could have numerous applications. For instance, TCR phage-display could be used to develop new strategies for isolating TCRs with unique specificity or it could be used to carry out mutagenesis studies on TCR molecules for analyzing their structure-function. We initially selected a TCR from the murine T-cell hybridoma, DO11.10, as our model system, and genetically engineered a three domain single-chain TCR (scTCR) linked to the gene p8 protein of the Escherichia coli bacteriophage fd. Immunoblotting studies revealed that (1) E. coli produced a soluble scTCR/p8 fusion protein and (2) the fusion protein was packaged by the phage. Cellular competition assays were performed to evaluate the functionality of the TCR and showed the DO11.10 TCR-bearing phage could significantly inhibit stimulation of DO11.10 T hybridoma cells by competing for binding to immobilized MHC/peptide IA(d)/OVA(323-339). Flow cytometric analysis was carried out to evaluate direct binding of DO11.10 TCR-bearing phage onto the surface of cells displaying either IAd containing irrelevant peptide or OVA peptide. The results revealed binding of DO11.10 TCR-bearing phage only on cells expressing IA(d) loaded with OVA peptide showing TCR fine specificity for peptide. To illustrate the generality of TCR phage-display, we also cloned and displayed on phage a second TCR which recognizes a peptide fragment from human tumor suppressor protein p53 restricted by HLA-A2. These findings demonstrate functional TCR can be displayed on bacteriophage potentially leading to the development of novel applications involving TCR phage-display.  相似文献

Outplacement firms developed in response to corporate downsizings to assist former upper-level employees in seeking reemployment. An important question for practitioners who assist clients in outplacement is how the personal characteristics that clients bring to the situation influence their success in finding a new job. The present archival study examined demographic variables, previous job history, and personality characteristics as predictors of outplacement outcomes. Outplacement duration was predicted by previous income, and new earnings were predicted by previous earnings, sex, and years with previous employer. Typhoid fever is often associated with abnormal liver biochemical tests, but severe hepatic involvement with a clinical feature of acute hepatitis is a rare complication. There have been more than 150 cases of salmonella hepatitis reported from both developed and developing countries. The documented incidence varies widely from less than 1% to 26% patients with enteric fever. The possible associated factors for development of salmonella hepatitis are virulence of the organisms, delayed treatment and poor general health of the patients. The pathogenesis of severe hepatic involvement in salmonella infection may be multifactorial and includes endotoxin, local inflammatory and/or host immune reactions. Clinical jaundice in salmonella hepatitis usually occurs within the first 2 weeks of the febrile illness. Hepatomegaly and moderate elevation of transaminase levels are common findings. Extreme hepatic dysfunction with hepatic encephalopathy is a rare coexisting complication in salmonella hepatitis. A positive culture for salmonella from blood or stool is essential to differentiate salmonella hepatitis from other causes of acute hepatitis. Hepatic pathology is characterized by the presence of typhoid nodules with marked hyperplasia of reticuloendothelial cells. The prognosis is usually good as salmonella hepatitis responds well to a specific antibiotic therapy and juandice resolves with clinical improvement. The clinical course can be severe with a mortality rate as high as 20%, particularly with delayed treatment or in patients with other complications of salmonella infection. As enteric fever is a common infection, the recognition of salmonella hepatitis is of clinical importance.  相似文献

Standing spin-wave modes in liquid3He have been studied by cw NMR at Larmor frequencies of 1, 2, and 4 MHz and pressures of 0, 6.3, and 12.3 bar. The spin waves, which produce peaks in the NMR line, are visible at temperatures below 5 mK at zero pressure. With the assumption of a slightly simplified sample shape and no transverse spin relaxation at the walls, the theory of Leggett fits the spin-wave frequencies in the normal liquid very well, giving a value of the Fermi liquid parameterF 1 a =–0.6±0.2 at zero pressure. The width of some of the peaks is larger than expected from other determinations of the quasiparticle diffusion time D . This could be due to wall relaxation or to deviations from the assumed sample geometry. In the superfluid A1 and A phases, where the data cannot be fitted to existing theories, the spin-wave modes are shifted in frequency and suffer additional damping as the temperature is decreased. At still lower temperatures in the B phase an inversion of the spin-wave spectrum from one side of the NMR line to the other is observed, agreeing quantitatively with the predictions of the 1975 theory of Combescot.  相似文献

The oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde has been investigated in the absence of solvent using zeolite-supported Au and Au–Pd catalysts. Three zeolites were investigated, ZSM-5, zeolite β and zeolite Y, and these were contrasted with the titanoslicalite TS-1 and TiO2 as supports. For the Au catalysts the best results are obtained with zeolite β as the support and the conversions were comparable or better than those observed with TiO2 in terms of turn over frequencies. However, the selectivities observed with the acidic zeolites were lower than the non-acidic TS-1 and TiO2. This is due to the subsequent reaction of benzaldehyde via acid catalysed reactions to give benzyl benzoate and its dibenzyl acetal, and, in some cases dibenzylether. Initial catalysts were evaluated with a gold loading of 2 wt% and increasing this to 4 wt% showed the expected increase in activity, indicating that there is scope to improve the performance of these catalysts. The most active catalysts were prepared by impregnation and catalysts prepared by deposition precipitation were considerably less active. Introduction of Pd into the catalyst improved the activity without significantly affecting the selectivity.  相似文献
