THERMAL STRESSES IN BONDED SOLAR CELLS-THE EFFECT OF THE ADHESIVE LAYER

A two-dimensional, rectangular model of a proposed solar cell structure is analyzed as two plate elements bonded with an elastic continuum. The governing equations are formulated using the principle of minimum potential energy, with displacement components that vary linearly through the thickness of the adhesive layer. An approximate solution is constructed for a particular class of material properties and is characterized by a boundary layer near the unloaded edge. Both interface stress components achieve their largest values at the edge, and the maximum shear stress is independent of the Young's Modulus of the substrate.     

Electrothermoelastic modeling of MEMS gripper

The design of many thermal Microelectromechanical (MEMS) actuators is often based on finite element analysis, but lacks analytical insight. In this paper we report a novel electro-thermal microgripper and a comprehensive thermal modeling of a general 5 lineshape microbeam’s actuator using 1-D steady state heat equations. Because of the variety of microgripper fabrication technologies and their applications, different thermal boundary conditions are considered for lifted off and attached grippers. Parametric and nonparametric electrothermomechanical identification models for silicon on insulator microgripper, fabricated on 100 μm device layer, are obtained.     

Branching rates and growth functions in the outgrowth of dendritic branching patterns

The outgrowth of dendritic branching patterns proceeds by neurite elongation and branching. These actions are supported by growth cones, specialized dynamic structures at the tips of outgrowing neurites, in response to a multitude of intracellular and extracellular signals and mechanisms. Branching rates of growth cones and their temporal patterns thus reflect the extent and changes in these responses. The present study outlines a model framework to relate branching rates of individual growth cones with the growth rate of the entire dendritic tree. The branching rate of an individual growth cone is assumed to depend on the total number of growth cones at any given moment (representing competition between growth cones), on its position along the dendrite, and on a baseline component representing all other factors. Four different strategies are discussed for determining quantitatively these components from experimental data. The methods are applied in the analysis of dendritic trees of Wistar rat multipolar non-pyramidal neurons, quantitatively reconstructed at several developmental stages (Parnavelas J G and Uylings H B M 1980 Brain Res. 193 373-82, Uylings H B M, Parnavelas J G, Walg H and Veltman W A M 1980 Mikroskopie 37 220-4). It is shown that the baseline branching rate is a rapidly decreasing function of time, indicating the largest baseline drive for branching in the early days of outgrowth.     

Design of a RFID case-based resource management system for warehouse operations

In the past, the selection of resources to execute various warehouse operation services was done solely by experts. In this paper, a RFID-based Resource Management System (RFID-RMS) is designed to help users to select the most suitable resource usage packages for handling warehouse operation orders by retrieving and analysing useful knowledge from a case-based data warehouse for solutions in both time saving and cost effective manner. In addition, a pure integral-linear programming model using a branch and bound algorithm to define the optimum travel distance of forklifts is also developed and embedded in the proposed system. The proposed system, which is suitable for usage in a warehouse operation environment, enhances the effectiveness in formulating resource usage package and managing resource operation by integrating the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), case-based reasoning (CBR) technologies and the programming model for forklift route optimization. Through applying RFID-RMS in the GENCO Distribution System, a multinational logistics company, the utilization of warehouse resources is expected to be maximized while work efficiency will be greatly enhanced.     

Efficacy of a tailored tobacco control program on long-term use in a population of U.S. Military troops.

The authors evaluated the effect of a brief tailored smoking control intervention delivered during basic military training on tobacco use in a population of military personnel (N = 33,215). Participants were randomized to either a tobacco use intervention (smoking cessation, smokeless tobacco use cessation, or prevention depending on tobacco use history) or a health education control condition. Results indicated that smokers who received intervention were 1.16 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.04, 1.30) times (7-day point prevalence) and 1.23 (95% CI = 1.07, 1.41) times (continuous abstinence) more likely to be abstinent than controls from smoking cigarettes at the 1-year follow-up (p p

It is clear that continued critical evaluation of all diary methods, both paper and plastic, is warranted. Configurations of NPD – Production Interfaces and Interface Integration Mechanisms

This paper describes and illustrates different configurations of the interface between new product development and production processes, including both intra–firm and inter–firm interfaces. These configurations are partly based on a process view of product innovation and partly on a structural view of product innovation. In addition to this typology of interfaces some integration mechanisms are described. The typology will serve as a basis for further research aimed at identifying consistent configurations of the different types of integration mechanisms that are available for industry to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of product innovation processes.

传统中药是现代生活健康的宝库,其功效在保健及慢性疾病的治疗方面尤其显著,并已备受世界重视.要成功将中药引进世界市场,最基本要求是要从科学方法去证明其效用及安全性;更重要是依从传统中医学对复方应用的要求去作研究.本文陈述了我们对传统中药古方"生脉散"研究及开发抗氧化健康食品的经验.透过现代生化及药理技术,我们发现"生脉散"中的五味子含丰富的抗氧化活性成分,为传统中医学利用"生脉散"治疗心脏病提供了理论依据.     

Vehicle-command center communications in a robotic vehicle system

The U.S. Army Laboratory Command is developing a testbed for cooperative, real-lime control of multiple land vehicles from a remotely located command center. The system requires the development and integration of a variety of elements which allow the vehicles to perform autonomously and under supervisory and teleoperated control. The National Institute of Standards and Technology is supporting this program by designing the overall system control architecture based on experience gained in developing hierarchial control systems in robotics and automated manufacturing. This paper analyzes the characteristics of the communication link between the vehicle and the remote command center. Areas addressed include the communication technology, the information content and required rates, the control system communication requirements, communications support of the development effort and examination of available standards.     

Converging measurement of horizontal and vertical individualism and collectivism.

The constructs of horizontal (H) and vertical (V) individualism (I) and collectivism (C) were theoretically defined and empirically supported. Study 1 confirmed, via factor analysis, that the 4 constructs, HI, V1, HC, and VC, which were previously found in the United States, which has an individualist culture, also were found in Korea which has a collectivist culture. Study 2 investigated multimethod-multitrait matrices measuring the constructs and generally supported their convergent and divergent validity. Study 3 showed how these 4 constructs relate to previously identified components by H. C. Triandis and colleagues.
