Why is science difficult to learn? Things are seldom what they seem

Abstract The difficulties of learning science are related to the nature of science itself and to the methods by which science is customarily taught without regard to what is known about children's learning. An information processing model is proposed to guide thinking and research in this area.

On the mechanics of large inelastic deformations: noncoaxiality,axial effects in torsion and localization

Summary The macroscopic behavior of materials subjected to large deformations is investigated by considering the structure and mechanics of the single slip. Physically based constitutive relations for the plastic flow and material spin are then rigorously derived by resorting to the concept of non-coaxiality; yielding a class of vertex-type plasticity models incorporating features like noncoaxiality and large material rotation. It is shown that these phenomena are inherently coupled through the concept of plastic spin as it relates to the persistence of noncoaxiality. The implication of such phenomena to large deformations is investigated by examining their influence on the development of axial effects accompanying finite shear deformation, as well as on the onset of localized shear bands.

In the past few years demands from the aerospace industry have caused considerable enhancement in the favourable properties of both polymer based materials and metals. These are discussed in connection with the progressive technical evolution of helicopters and other advanced technological products from the Westland Group.     

Lateral habits ofn-alkane single crystals

The lateral crystal habits ofn-alkanes (n-C _n H_2n+2) have been observed just below the melting points by optical microscopy forn=18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 34, 44, 50 and 65. The shape of the crystals depends on the crystal phase: circular in the rotator phase, lenticular in phase C, and diamond in the low-temperature phase. The rounding of the lateral shape can be explained in terms of thermal roughening of the lateral faces in the disordered phases at high temperature.
