Three-dimensional display in nuclear medicine

Several surface and volume rendering techniques are compared using nuclear medicine data including several new methods developed by the authors specifically for scintigraphic data. The techniques examined are summed projection, thresholded projection, threshold-based surface illumination, volumetric compositing, maximum-activity projection, sun-weighted maximum-activity projection, and variable attenuation. The advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed in relation to the goals of three-dimensional display, which are defined herein. Selected images are shown to illustrate the usefulness of the methods.     

Quantitative real-time imaging of myocardium based on ultrasonic integrated backscatter

The integrated backscatter calculation over the full, two-dimensional echocardiographic sector is implemented to produce images from closed-chest dogs. This new real-time integrated backscatter measurement system allows a continuous determination of integrated backscatter from all myocardial regions in the ultrasonic view. By replacing the conventional video processor in a commercial two-dimensional echocardiographic imager with this new real-time backscatter measurement system, it is possible to produce real-time two-dimensional images based on integrated backscatter.     

Effect of added water, sodium erythorbate and storage time on the functional properties of prerigor beef preblends in a model system

Singular and combined effects of added water, sodium erythorbate and storage time on salt soluble protein extractability, bacteriological and chemical characteristics of preblended hot-boned beef were evaluated. Waterholding and gel forming capacities of preblended hot-boned beef containing either 0, 10 or 20% added water were determined. Significant interactions between added water level and storage time on microbial counts and between sodium erythorbate level and storage time on thiobarbituric acid values and residual nitrite levels were noted. The presence of sodium erythorbate resulted in a more (P < 0·05) rapid rate of nitrite disappearance, but it did not affect (P > 0·05) microbial counts. Salt-soluble protein extractability was not affected (P > 0·05) by added water, but more protein could be extracted with increasing storage time. A trend existed to suggest that the presence of added water in the meat preblends slightly improved the gel formation and waterholding capacities.     

Small blaze angle gratings with various surface treatments for use in the extreme ultraviolet

Three replica gratings were made from a single master; two were epoxy overcoated with different thicknesses of gold, and one was replicated directly in gold. Their performance in EUV light at grazing incidence angles was measured and compared.     

Interactive digital filtering of gated cardiac studies during cine display

The use of a novel class of image processing hardware, the image computer, is illustrated by application to gated cardiac studies. Digital filtering of a nine-view study consisting of 144 frames, each 64x64 pixels in size, is performed using the Wiener filter. During image display the operator can change the filter parameters. Refiltering is then performed essentially instantaneously, permitting truly interactive filter selection. Comparable digital filtering using a fast conventional computer and display hardware is shown to be too slow to permit interactive filter modification. Image computers incorporate very large image memories with very tightly coupled, fast arithmetic processors and video display devices and allow very computation-intensive calculations to be performed interactively.
