Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) were used as a sentinel species to monitor the contamination and bioavailability of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in the Hudson River watershed. Several tree swallow nest box colonies around and downstream from Hudson Falls, NY, were studied. Tree swallow eggs, adults, and 5-, 10-, and 15-day-old nestlings were collected and analyzed for 103 PCB congeners. Emergent insects collected by net (primarily Odonata) or as a food bolus (primarily Diptera) taken from the mouths of adult tree swallows returning to the nest were analyzed in the same manner. Total PCB concentrations (wet weight) in eggs from two contaminated sites ranged from 9000 to 25,000 ng/g and accumulated to 32,000 and 96,000 ng/g in 15-day-old nestling at two contaminated sites. The congener patterns of PCBs in eggs, nestlings, and adults were compared to those found in emergent insects (Odonata and Diptera) using principal components analysis. The PCB patterns of the biota differed from that of Aroclor technical mixtures. PCB patterns in adult tree swallows were similar to those in eggs, while the patterns in dietary insects were similar to nestling tree swallows. Uptake rate constants were determined for tree swallow nestlings and compared between the two contaminated sites. The estimated PCB congener uptake rate constants were 0.008-0.02 d(-1) based on uptake in nestlings until day 15 post-hatch. The rate constants were comparable between the two study areas and may be used to predict nestling contamination at other locations. Our studies confirm the utility of nestling tree swallows to evaluate localized PCB contamination.  相似文献

Two technologies in combination, cometabolic bioremediation and in-well vapor stripping, were applied to reduce trichloroethylene (TCE) concentrations in groundwater at a contaminant source area without the need to pump contaminated groundwater to the surface for treatment. The vapor-stripping well reduced source TCE concentrations (as high as 6-9 mg/L) by over 95%. Effluent from the well then flowed to two bioremediation wells, where additional reductions of approximately 60% were achieved. TCE removal was extensively monitored (for research and not regulatory purposes) using an automated system that collected samples about every 45 min at 55 locations over an area of approximately 50 x 60 m2. During 4.5 months of system operation, total TCE mass removal was 8.1 kg, 7.1 kg of which resulted from in-well vapor stripping and 1.0 kg from biotreatment. The system reduced the average TCE concentration of about 3000 microg/L in the source-zone groundwater to about 250 microg/L in water leaving the treatment zone, effecting greater than 92% TCE removal. A 6 month rebound study after system operation ceased found TCE concentrations then increased significantly in the treatment zone due to diffusion from the fractured rock below and perhaps other processes, with mass increases of about 1.5 kg in the lower aquifer and 0.3 kg in the upper aquifer.  相似文献

A bioenergetics-based model was used to simulate the accumulation of total PCBs and 20 PCB congeners by nestling tree swallows at two contaminated sites on the Upper Hudson River, New York. PCB concentrations in birds were calculated as the sum of inherited residues and those acquired through consumption of contaminated insects. Close agreement between simulations and measured residues in 5-, 10-, and 15-day-old nestlings was obtained when PCB concentrations in the diet were set equal to those in food boli taken from adult birds. These simulations were further optimized by fitting the value of a dietary assimilation efficiency constant. Fitted constants for both sites were similar and averaged about 0.7. An evaluation of model performance for individual congeners provided no evidence of metabolic biotransformation. The results of this study are consistent with a companion effort in which principal components analysis was used to compare PCB congener patterns in insects and in tree swallow eggs, nestlings, and adults. Together, these studies establish a quantitative linkage between nestling tree swallows and the insects that they consume and provide strong support for the use of nestling swallows as a biomonitoring species for exposure assessment.  相似文献

This study uses several years of effluent quality data from 43 sites where online monitoring has been operational for many years resulting in the accumulation of high-resolution data sets. The data show a highly repeatable, seasonal dependence of effluent turbidity on temperature. This has been modelled with simple techniques producing a generic model that is neither data hungry nor requires site calibration. Viscosity-based mechanisms are proposed and discussed. These mechanisms differ from conventional assumptions of suspended solids peaks being solely flow related and or ascribed to ‘spring sloughing’. The proposal is that the organic loading of the filter and the physical temperature effects on settlement velocity are both as influential as hydraulic loading in determining effluent suspended solids concentration. Application of the models enables improved design for new/upgraded units and more accurate capacity assessment of trickling filters and humus tanks enabling improved operational risk management of compliance failure.  相似文献

This paper details the laboratory processes used to fabricate CdS/CdTe solar cells at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The basic fabrication technique includes low‐pressure chemical vapor deposited SnO2 , chemical‐bath deposited CdS, close‐spaced sublimated CdTe, solution‐CdCl2 treatment, and an acid‐contact etch, followed by application of a doped‐graphite paste. This paper also describes the results of a reproducibility study in which cells were produced by multiple operators with an average AM1·5 efficiency of 12·6%. And finally, this paper discusses process sensitivities and alternative cell fabrication procedures and reports the fabrication of a cell with an AM1·5 efficiency of 15·4%. Jet engine components need protective coatings to function against both high-temperature and environmental effects. Ingested calcium–magnesium–aluminosilicates (CMAS) dust particulates are extremely detrimental to the life of the coatings. However, many methods exist to investigate the infiltration of CMAS into these coatings with each method exploring a different aspect of the degradation process. To probe the overlap in these methods, this study focuses on the effect of grain size, areal density, and aspect ratio on the infiltration of CMAS into yttria stabilized zirconia. The infiltration depths ranged from 6 up to 85 µm depending on the test conditions.  相似文献
