Monolithic rat-race mixers for millimeter waves

In this paper, we report on fully monolithic millimeter-wave Schottky-barrier diode (SBD) down-converters with an IF amplifier using heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBT's). A rat-race circuit is used for the mixer, and is analyzed using a harmonic-balance simulator. The measured conversion gain and the isolation are 7.1 and 29 dB in the V-band design, and 8.0 and 25 dB in the W-band design, respectively. The conversion gains are matched well with the circuit simulation     

Comparison of the effect of a proteolytic enzyme dispase and a chelator for the preparation of epidermal sheet from nude mice.

Histochemical studies of epidermal Langerhans cells require well-preserved epidermal sheets. We studied the conditions for the preparation of the epidermal sheets from the skin of the ear, hind limb and trunk of nude mice. Two types of commercial dispase, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), were used at several concentrations and the effects were compared. Dermo-epidermal separation was evaluated by the preservation of ATPase activity of Langerhans cells in the epidermal sheet and by the ultrastructure of epidermal cells (Langerhans cells and keratinocytes) as well as epidermal-dermal junction. Good separation depended on the combination of the concentration of the reagent and site of the skin. The concentrations of both dispase and EDTA effective for separation of the epidermis in the nude mouse were lower than those in other mouse strains reported.     

Handling of fine-particles by time-averaged particle driving method in plasmas

We developed a noble technique for the fine-particle handling in plasmas. In this method a pair of point electrodes are introduced in the plasma, to which positive pulses are applied alternatively. When the pulse repetition period is shorter than the particle response time, the particles feel only time-averaged force because of their large mass. Spatial profile of the equivalent potential of the time-averaged force varies from a circle to an ellipse with an increase in the local discharge at the electrodes. The particles are eventually transported toward a middle point between two point-electrodes, being almost independent of their initial positions. This method is quite effective for converging fine particles in the plasma.     

FPGA-Based Decentralized Control of Arrayed MEMS for Microrobotic Application

In this paper, the authors have developed and implemented a decentralized decision-making strategy using field-programmable gate array (FPGA) technology as a prototype for an integrated controller of a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) array for air-flow planar micromanipulation. The MEMS array was proposed to be integrated in a hybrid multichip module containing the FPGA-based controller. Algorithms and architectures, used for the decentralized control implementation and the hardware resource optimization, are described. A charge-coupled device camera was used to make each MEMS like an autonomous system when the distributed MEMS chip was tested. Finally, under air-flow condition, the FPGA-based decentralized control system successfully performed an object manipulation.     

Novel B-ring modified combretastatin analogues: syntheses and antineoplastic activity

A series of B-ring modified combretastatin analogues were synthesized and their inhibitory activity against microtubule assembly, cytotoxic activity against Colon 26 adenocarcinoma cancer cell line were evaluated. Among these, pyridone derivative (19) showed strong antimitotic activity and cytotoxicity, along with excellent water-solubility.     

Electron microscope studies of InxGav1−xAs/GaAs/Si grown by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition

The microstructure of In_xGa_1−xAs/GaAs (5 nm/5 nm, x < 0 to 1.0), as grown by a metalorganic chemical vapor deposition two-step growth technique on Si(100) at 450‡C, and subsequently annealed at 750‡C, is investigated using plan-view and cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy. The variations in resultant island morphology and strain as a function of the In content were examined through the comparison of the misfit dislocation arrays and moirés observed. The results are discussed in relation to the ways in which the island relaxation process changes for high In content.     

Clonal composition of malignant fibrous histiocytoma: analysis by PCR-based assay of the human androgen receptor gene (HUMARA)

Poly(A)+ mRNA was isolated from leaves of potato plants (Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Desiree) according to standard protocols. This poly(A)+ mRNA was injected via glass microcapillaries into oocytes that were surgically removed from the African clawed toad Xenopus laevis. As a control, oocytes were either injected with H2O or remained untreated. Three days after injection the oocytes were analyzed by two electrode voltage clamping. Current voltage analysis revealed that a K+ channel from potato was functionally expressed in injected oocytes. The identity of this K+ channel was confirmed by its substrate specificity and a shift in the reversal potential. In particular, when the outside K+ concentration was increased the reversal potential of poly(A)+ injected oocytes shifted to more positive values. Furthermore, K+ outward currents declined when the outside K+ concentration was raised from 0.1 to 100 mM. Inward currents increased with an elevation of the K+ concentration. Several pharmaceuticals were tested for their potential to block this K+ channel. As a result, the channel was completely blocked by BaCl2. A three state reaction kinetic model was used to simulate the currents through the K+ transport protein as function of the extracellular K+ concentration. In particular, the simulation revealed current voltage relations that exactly matched the measured ones. Saturation of current voltage curves emerged from the simulation as a consequence of high extracellular potassium concentration.     

Gender differences in FFM accumulation and architectural characteristics of muscle

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the existence and role of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) in otitis media with effusion (OME). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective. METHODS: The levels of two major TGF-beta isoforms, TGF-beta1 and TGF-beta2, in the middle ear effusions (MEEs) of 44 children were evaluated using enzyme-linked immunospecific assays (ELISAs). Forty-eight MEEs were separated into three clinically relevant groups (i.e., serous, mucoid, and purulent), and TGF-beta levels were correlated with clinical parameters of disease for these MEEs. RESULTS: Both TGF-beta1 and TGF-beta2 were present in the samples. Mean levels of TGF-beta1 (920.36 +/- 437.75 pg/mg total protein) were generally 100-fold greater than those of TGF-beta2 (9.65 +/- 11.19 pg/mg total protein). TGF-beta1 levels were elevated in association with a history of previous tympanostomy tube placements (TTPs) (P = .029) and mucoid effusions (P = .042). TGF-beta2 levels were elevated in association with a history of previous TTPs (P = .100) and chronic (i.e., serous or mucoid) effusions (P = .003). CONCLUSIONS: TGF-beta1 is present in the MEEs of children with OME. Furthermore, TGF-beta1 and TGF-beta2 levels were elevated differentially in the presence of chronic disease indicators in OME, suggesting that these isoforms may have differing roles in the inflammatory processes that characterize OME.     

Cognitive model of team cooperation in en-route air traffic control

Since controller teams are in charge of en-route air traffic control, team cooperation is a key issue for good control performance. We conducted ethnographic field observation at the Tokyo Area Control Center and then analyzed the obtained data to develop a cognitive model of team cooperation in en-route air traffic control. We segmented conversational records, behavioral records, and so on by control unit, and then clarified relations between the segments and identified expert knowledge and judgment behind them. Cognitive processes of controller teams were reconstructed based on a concept of distributed cognition. The analysis revealed that the mutual belief model is applicable to team cooperation processes, the role assignment of tasks within a controller team is implicit and that control plans are implemented smoothly once team situation awareness has been established. A cognitive model of controllers?? team cooperation has been constructed based on these findings.
