Adaptational physiology studies how animals cope with their environment, even if this environment is subject to permanent fluctuations such as tidal or seasonal variations. Aquatic organisms are generally more prone to be exposed to osmotic, hypoxic and temperature challenges than terrestrial animals. Some of these challenges are more restraining in an aquatic environment. To date, very few studies have used in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to uncover the physiological mechanisms that respond to or compensate for these challenges. This paper provides an overview of what has been accomplished thus far by using MRI to study the environmental physiology of fish. It introduces the reader to the use of small teleost fish such as carp (12 cm, 60 g) and eelpout (25 cm, 50 g) as models for such research and to provide new perceptions into the applicability of MRI tools based on new insights into the nature of MRI contrast. Representative MRI studies have made contributions to the identification of the lack of cell volume repair in stenohaline fish during osmotic stress. They have studied the underlying physiological mechanisms of brain anoxia tolerance in fish and have qualified the role of the cardio-circulatory system in setting thermal tolerance windows of fish. 相似文献

The use of time optimal path planning can speed up robots on assembly lines and allow them to run faster, increasing their productivity. This paper seeks to develop a more complete understanding of the nature of time-optimal point-to-point trajectories for polar coordinate robots and intends to show how effective direct numerical methods are in computing optimal control solutions, including the resolution of complicated motor switching structures. In time optimal robot point-to-point motion there is generically one robot axis that has the hardest time reaching its endpoint. And then, to whatever extent other axes have extra freedom, it must be used to help the axis with the hardest task, whenever possible. Such assistance makes use of different mechanical interaction forces and effects. Trace elements trapped in glaciers are important indicators for the characterization of past biogeochemical cycles, the identification of numerous sources and their varying strength, and thus indirectly provide insight into past climate variations. However, this necessitates highly resolved and continuous records of trace elements in ice. To obtain records corresponding to these requirements, a continuous ice-core melting (CIM) device was coupled to an inductively coupled plasma sector field mass spectrometer (ICP-SFMS). Accuracy of this newly developed method was tested by replicate analysis of longitudinally cut ice-core sections (reproducibility) and by comparing results of the continuous method with the conventional decontamination and analysis procedure. The new, fast method is suited to accurately determine concentrations of a number of elements, such as Li, Na, Mg, Ca, Mn, Co, Br, Sr, Mo, and Tl. However, for 18 elements (including Al and lanthanides) observed concentrations were underestimated when analyzed using the continuous method. Possible explanations of these low concentrations are (i) incomplete dissolution of mineral dust particles contained in the ice resulting from a delayed acidification step and/or (ii) adsorption of dissolved trace elements or mineral dust particles on the surface of the ice melting device. 相似文献

Photodiodes are used as easy-to-operate detectors in the extreme-ultraviolet spectral range. At the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt photodiodes are calibrated with an uncertainty of spectral responsivity of 0.3% or less. Stable photodiodes are a prerequisite for the dissemination of these high-accuracy calibrations to customers. Silicon photodiodes with different top layers were exposed to intense extreme-ultraviolet irradiation. Diodes coated with diamondlike carbon or TiSiN proved to be stable within a few percent up to a radiant exposure of 100 kJ/cm2. The changes in responsivity could be explained as being due to carbon contamination and to changes in the internal charge collection efficiency. For the first time, ion mobility spectrometers (IMS) with radioactive and UV ionization sources in combination with multicapillary columns (MCCs) have been used to determine methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), a gasoline additive, in water and nitrogen as well as the monoaromatic compounds benzene, toluene, and m-xylene (BTX). A membrane extraction unit was set up to extract the substances from water, which is simple, effective, and easy to automate for further applications. Thus, the detection of MTBE and BTX of gasoline vapors was accomplished after a preliminary silicone membrane extraction. Two-dimensional data analyses of IMS-chromatograms allow us to separate these substances clearly according to their different retention and drift times. Method detection limits for MTBE were 2 microg/L (UV) and 30 pg/L (63Ni) in nitrogen and 20 mg/L (UV) and 1 microg/L (63Ni) in water. Rather a good reproducibility was achieved with relative standard deviations of between 2.9 and 9%. The method presented in this article has been proven to be suitable for nearly real-time monitoring as the total analysis time is less than 90 s. As an example of application, the detection of MTBE and BTX in a mixture of volatile organic compounds of pure gasoline using the 2-D IMS-chromatogram is presented. 相似文献
