Transmission Electron Microscopy of Annealed ZrO2+8 Mol% Sc2O3

The influence of heat treatment (800°C for 200 h) on the micro-structure of 8 mol% Sc₂O₃-ZrO₂ was investigated by XRD and TEM. The starting material was initially characterized and found to contain predominantly cubic-fluorite phase grains, with <5% of the grain containing the rhombohedral β phase. The β phase was positively identified by the analysis of electron diffraction pattern and by quantitative energy dispersive X-ray analysis. On aging, the relative amount of β phase was found to increase to about 15 to 20% by XRD measurement; this was confirmed by TEM observation. The orientation relation between the different variants of the β phase within a grain was determined to be (100)_r||(010)_r, and the geometrical arrangement of these variants within the grain was deduced using a 2¹/₂D imaging electron microscopy technique.

SOLVING THE JIGSAW PUZZLE PROBLEM IN LINEAR TIME

Abstract

We introduce an algorithm that efficiently matches (fits together) parts of boundaries of two-dimensional objects in order to assemble apictorial jigsaw puzzles. A rotation-independent shape encoding allows us to find the best (longest) match between two shapes in time proportional to the sum of the lengths of their representations. In order to find this match, we use Weiner's string matching technique combined with compact position trees to find, in linear time, the longest shared pattern between two strings. The shape matching procedure is then used by two greedy algorithms to assemble the apictorial jigsaw puzzles.     

THE EFFECT OF MILK COMPOSITION, DENSITY AND TEMPERATURE ON QUANTITY MEASUREMENT

Calibrated measuring vessels change their capacity with temperature but the calculation of corrections is straightforward and easy to apply. Measurement by weighbridge is dependent on density but if the temperature and composition of the liquid are known, density can be deduced to within 0.05 per cent from the data given. The arbitrary use of different standard temperatures complicates the picture. Meters are available for any of the liquid dairy products and the best way to achieve accuracy is to calibrate with the right liquid at the right flowrate and the right temperature. Above all, with meters it is important for the installation to be right.     

Palatability and Storage Characteristics of Precooked Beef Roasts

The palatability and storage characteristics of fresh, frozen and precooked beef chuck roasts prepared using added phosphate-salt and vacuum cooking bags were evaluated. Palatability attributes (tenderness, juiciness, beef flavor intensity, and off-flavor intensity) of precooked roasts prepared in vacuum cooking bags with phosphate-salt were as good or better than freshly cooked roasts. Precooked roasts in vacuum cooking bags had the lowest total bacterial counts after storage for 14 and 28 days. A palatable precooked roast beef product was developed that can be stored for 28 days at 4°C.
