Akresol: A new polymer quenchant

The cooling capacity of aqueous solutions of polymer compositions based on polycarboxylic acids and copolymers of N-vinyl amides is studied. Tests of a new quenchant based on interpolymer complexes of anion-active components are performed and the process possibilities and the reproducibility of properties of different batches of this quenchant are estimated.     

Motion control of a rotor with a cavity with a viscous fluid

A formulation and solution procedure of optimal control problems for perturbed relative uniform motion of a body with a cavity filled with a viscous incompressible fluid are proposed. In this paper, the case with a cylinder is considered; however, this approach is basically true for the a cavity of an arbitrary form. The formula for the angular velocity of perturbed motion depending on an external perturbing element is devised. After that, we have a possibility to set different optimal control problems and apply the formalism elaborated in the optimal control theory. Two illustrated problems are given.

For a motion perturbed with respect to uniform rotation of a body with a cavity containing an ideal liquid, two problems of optimal control with terminal functionals are considered. The model with discontinuous optimal control is studied. Numerical solutions for the problem with constraints on control of the type of inequalities are obtained.     

Some results of the work of the COMECON Scientific-Technical Coordinating Council on fast reactors

Conclusions The experience of 6 years of work by the Council of Scientific-Technical Cooperation as well as the meetings of specialists have made it possible to determine the subject-matter for joint research on fast reactors with due account for the capabilities and interests of each country. Thanks to the contact between delegations of various countries at the CSTC sessions and at meetings it has been possible to effectively coordinate research and to find optimal solutions for particular problems. The work of the specialists has become more goal-oriented. The results of the work on individual problems are discussed at meeting of specialists from the COMECON member-countries.The regular information prepared by the USSR on the operation of the BOR-60 and BN-350 reactors and on the development of the BN-600 is of great importance.At its twelfth meeting, the CSTC established the subject on which efforts should be concentrated: the choice and substantiation of the principal technical solutions and parameters for the BN-1600, and the development of individual systems and equipment for this reactor, development and construction of reliable sodium-water steam generators, as well as instruments for monitoring the technological parameters of fast-neutron reactor plant.Translated from Atomnaya Énergiya, Vol. 44, No. 6, pp. 533–534, June, 1978.

Optimization of schedules with precedence logical conditions

The problem of constructing a time-optimal schedule for jobs execution with precedence logical conditions is considered. Every job is associated with a list of its direct predecessors, execution time and the number of the completed direct predecessors necessary to start execution of the job. It is shown that the problem can be solved by the methods of the cyclical games theory [1, 2]. We propose a pseudopolynomial algorithm for construction of the optimal schedule; i.e. the presented algorithm is efficient for the problems with small data arrays. The paper extends the results from [3], where AND/OR schedules are considered. A job can be started, when all its direct predecessor have been executed or when at least one of its direct predecessors has been completed.

Iterative functional modification method for solving a transportation problem

We propose a new method for solving transportation problems based on decomposing the original problem into a number of two-dimensional optimization problems. Since the solution procedure is integer-valued and monotonic in the objective function, the required computation is finite. As a result, we get not only a single optimal solution of the original transportation problem but a system of constraints that can yield all optimal solutions. We give numerical examples that illustrate the constructions of our algorithm.
