Both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies in the United States have shown consistent changes between college age and middle adulthood. There appear to be declines in 3 of the 5 major factors of personality-Neuroticism, Extraversion, and Openness-and increases in Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. To examine cross-cultural generalizability of these findings, translations of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory were administered to samples in Germany, Italy, Portugal, Croatia, and South Korea (N?=?7,363). Similar patterns of age differences were seen in each country, for both men and women. Common trends were also seen for the more specific traits that define the major factors. Because these nations differ substantially in culture and recent history, results suggest the hypothesis that these are universal maturational changes in adult personality. BACKGROUND: In the context of the modern concern regarding rapid consumption and low availability of fossil sources of energy and chemicals, urban and agro‐industrial sources of chemicals represent interesting environmentally friendly alternatives. A recent paper has shown that a humic acid‐like material extracted from urban and green wastes compost exhibits very good surfactant properties. A large number of technological applications could possibly use this material as a chemical auxiliary. This paper reports on the performance of the material as a chemical auxiliary in textile dyeing. RESULTS: The compost‐isolated humic acid‐like bio‐surfactant is shown to perform in nylon 6 microfiber dyeing by water soluble and insoluble dyes as well as and more conveniently than commercial sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (SDBS). With both types of dye the bio‐surfactant allows the same quality of dyed product as the synthetic surfactants do, but at lower additive concentration. From process cost and environmental impact points of view, the bio‐surfactant has the advantages of operating at much lower additive concentrations and should be available at significantly lower cost than the synthetic surfactants. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that biomass wastes may be a low cost renewable source of chemicals with friendly environmental impact. Such a perspective implies economic and environmental benefits deriving from a new waste management technology that considers biomass waste as a source of chemicals, and from lower oil consumption in the manufacture of synthetic surfactants. High-dimensional models typically require a large computational overhead for multiphysics applications, which hamper their use for broad-sweeping domain interrogation. Herein, we develop a modeling framework to capture the through-plane fluid dynamic response of electrodes and flow fields in a redox flow cell, generating a computationally inexpensive two-dimensional (2D) model. We leverage a depth-averaging approach that also accounts for variations in out-of-plane fluid motion and departures from Darcy's law that arise from averaging across three-dimensions (3D). Our resulting depth-averaged 2D model successfully predicts the fluid dynamic response of arbitrary in-plane flow field geometries, with discrepancies of <5% for both maximum velocity and pressure drop. This corresponds to reduced computational expense, as compared to 3D representations (<1% of duration and 10% of RAM usage), providing a platform to screen and optimize a diverse set of cell geometries. 相似文献

In recent years, antioxidants have gained great importance because of their potential use in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. This interest is rooted in the cumulative evidence connecting active oxygen and free radicals with numerous human degenerative disorders, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, aging, and atherosclerosis. Polyphenols are the major class of antioxidant able to reduce the oxidative damages of lipids, proteins, enzymes, carbohydrates, and DNA in living cells and tissues. Among the realm of polyphenol compounds, polyphenol conjugates have been proposed as innovative materials which, by combining the advantageous properties of both the components, can increase the efficiency of antioxidants and their range of application in nutritional and biomedical fields. Due to the increasing request for pollutant emissions reduction, modern closed-loop combustion control strategies require the on-board evaluation of the center of combustion (MFB50), i.e. the angular position where 50% of the injected fuel mass is burned. This work presents an MFB50 estimation algorithm based on engine speed measurement, that can be performed using the same toothed wheel already present on-board. Therefore, this approach is compatible with on-board application and requires no additional hardware cost. The complete methodology has been applied to a Diesel engine mounted on-board a vehicle and the accuracy of the obtained results is compatible with on-board requirements. 相似文献

Feedback controllers are typically applied to computing systems by acting on some quantities (“tunable parameters” in the computer science lexicon, e.g., a packet drop rate) to attain some goal (e.g., a required bandwidth allocation). In other words, control loops are closed around the computing system. In the authors' opinion, this is definitely a partial use of control. Many critical parts of computing systems should not be controlled, but rather redesigned in the form of controllers. In electronic circuit design, preliminary analyses of the circuit performances are generally carried out using time-consuming simulations. These analyses should be performed as fast as possible because of the strict temporal constraints on the industrial sector time to market. On the other hand, there is the need of precision and reliability of the analyses. For these reasons, there is more and more interest toward surrogate models able to approximate the behavior of a device with a high precision making use of a limited set of samples. Using suitable surrogate models instead of simulations, it is possible to perform a reliable analysis in less time. In this work, we are going to analyze how the surrogate models given by the support vector machine (SVM) perform when they are used to approximate the behavior of industrial circuits that will be employed in consumer electronics. This article outlines a theory of naive probability. According to the theory, individuals who are unfamiliar with the probability calculus can infer the probabilities of events in an extensional way: They construct mental models of what is true in the various possibilities. Each model represents an equiprobable alternative unless individuals have beliefs to the contrary, in which case some models will have higher probabilities than others. The probability of an event depends on the proportion of models in which it occurs. The theory predicts several phenomena of reasoning about absolute probabilities, including typical biases. It correctly predicts certain cognitive illusions in inferences about relative probabilities. It accommodates reasoning based on numerical premises, and it explains how naive reasoners can infer posterior probabilities without relying on Bayes's theorem. In the context of the anti-plane problem, we study harmonic oscillations of an elastic rectangle whose base is isolated from the foundation by a viscoelastic stratum of finite thickness. Such a (viscoelastic) medium is embedded in the ground, which is simulated as a homogeneous isotropic elastic half-space. By using the fundamental representation of solution through single and double layer potentials, the problem is reduced to a set of integral equations. The main practical aspect of this investigation is connected with seismic base isolation.
