A measurement-theoretic analysis of the fuzzy logic model of perception.

The fuzzy logic model of perception (FLMP) is analyzed from a measurement-theoretic perspective. FLMP has an impressive history of fitting factorial data, suggesting that its probabilistic form is valid. The authors raise questions about the underlying processing assumptions of FLMP. Although FLMP parameters are interpreted as fuzzy logic truth values, the authors demonstrate that for several factorial designs widely used in choice experiments, most desirable fuzzy truth value properties fail to hold under permissible rescalings, suggesting that the fuzzy logic interpretation may be unwarranted. The authors show that FLMP's choice rule is equivalent to a version of G. Rasch's (1960) item response theory model, and the nature of FLMP measurement scales is transparent when stated in this form. Statistical inference theory exists for the Rasch model and its equivalent forms. In fact, FLMP can be reparameterized as a simple 2-category logit model, thereby facilitating interpretation of its measurement scales and allowing access to commercially available software for performing statistical inference. Scanning Acoustic Microscopy of SCS-6 Silicon Carbide Fiber

Scanning acoustic microscopy of SCS-6 silicon carbide fiber reveals large radial variations in acoustic reflectivity associated with the chemical composition and microstructure of a given fiber region. Rayleigh wave fringe patterns observed in each of five subregions are used to calculate the average Young modulus of that subregion. The Young modulus is found to increase monotonically from 40 GPa in the carbon core to a value of 413 GPa in the stoichiometric SiC region. The effective Young modulus of the fiber as a whole is estimated from the moduli of the individual regions and it is compared with mechanical measurements reported in the literature.

Efficient simulation of hierarchical stochastic activity network models

Stochastic extensions to Petri nets have gained widespread acceptance as a method for describing the dynamic behavior of discrete-event systems. Both simulation and analytic methods have been proposed to solve such models. This paper describes a set of efficient procedures for simulating models that are represented as stochastic activity networks (SANs, a variant of stochastic Petri nets) and composed SAN-based reward models (SBRMs). Composed SBRMs are a hierarchical representation for SANs, in which individual SAN models can be replicated and joined together with other models, in an iterative fashion. The procedures exploit the hierarchical structure and symmetries introduced by the replicate operation in a composed SBRM to reduce the cost of future event list management. The procedures have been implemented as part of a larger performance-dependability modeling package known asUltraSAN, and have been applied to real, large-scale applications. Industrial Text and French Neo-structuralism

Parallel to, and to some degree inreaction to French poststructuralisttheorization (as championed by Derrida,Foucault, and Lacan, among others) is a Frenchneo-structuralism built directly on theachievements of structuralism using electronicmeans. This paper examines some exemplaryapproaches to text analysis in thisneo-structuralist vein: SATOR's topoidictionary, the WinBrill POS tagger andFrançois Rastier's interpretativesemantics. I consider how a computer-assisted``Wissenschaft' accumulation of expertisecomplements the neo-structuralist approach.Ultimately, electronic critical studies will bedefined by their strategic position at theintersection of the two chief technologiesshaping our society: the new informationprocessing technology of computers and therepresentational techniques that haveaccumulated for centuries in texts.Understanding how these two informationmanagement paradigms complement each other is akey issue for the humanities, for computerscience, and vital to industry, even beyond thenarrow realm of the language industries. Thedirection of critical studies, a small planetlong orbiting in only rarefied academiccircles, will be radically altered by the sheersize of the economic stakes implied by a newkind of text, the industrial text, thetechnological heart of an information society.     

Overview and update.

A summary of points of agreement and disagreement among the preceding articles is presented. Attention is called to implicit assumptions which if openly acknowledged would improve dialogue on peer review issues. Pertinent events that have occurred since the Anaheim symposium are reviewed. On upgrading the numerics in combustion chemistry codes

A method of updating and reusing legacy FORTRAN codes for combustion simulations is presented using the DAEPACK software package. The procedure is demonstrated on two codes that come with the CHEMKIN-II package, CONP and SENKIN, for the constant-pressure batch reactor simulation. Using DAEPACK generated code, analytical derivative calculations, sparsity pattern information, and hidden discontinuity information can be obtained for the models of interest. This information can be easily integrated with different solvers giving the modeler great flexibility in selecting the best solution procedure. Using the generated code, the CONP code was connected to three different solvers, and the SENKIN code was connected to two different solvers. The effect of model formulation, analytical derivatives, sparsity, and sensitivity equation solution method were analyzed for three large kinetic mechanisms for methane, acetylene, and n-heptane. For the n-heptane model, with 544 species and 2446 reactions, a factor of 10-speed improvement over the original solution procedure was found using analytical derivatives and sparse linear algebra. For sensitivity calculations, for a small number of parameters, a factor of 55 improvement over the original solution procedure was found for the n-heptane problem. Upon closer examination of results, no one method is found to always be superior to other methods, and selection of the appropriate solution procedure requires an examination of the specific kinetic mechanism, which is easily conducted using DAEPACK generated code.
