Documentation services: an expanding future

The sophistication of documentation services has much increased in recent years with the advent of computerised retrieval systems. Here the author shows how this has also opened up the potential for better international information transfer by harmonising different data bases, a task already started within CIB. Mr. Stern is director of Byggdok, the Swedish Institute for Building Documentation, and is also a member of the CIB Board.     

A comparison of administration procedures for the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure: Flowcharts versus pen switching.

The Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF) is commonly used to assess visuospatial skills, visuoconstruction, visual memory, and executive functioning. Two different methods are traditionally used to record the order in which the figure is drawn: the flowchart method and the pen-switching method. Although it has been suggested that pen switching may interfere with performance, to date no research has been conducted to assess whether ROCF performance significantly differs due to administration method. As part of routine neuropsychological evaluation, 100 inpatients and outpatients were randomly assigned to either method. Using the Boston Qualitative Scoring System and the traditional 36-point scoring method, the authors unexpectedly found that the pen-switching group generally performed better than the flowchart group, and productions drawn with pen switching were also significantly faster to score. The impact of the Internet on the social lives of users: A representative sample from 13 countries

One of the most vociferous criticisms of the Internet has always been that it contributes to loneliness among its users. This study analyses results from the World Internet Project, comprised of representative samples from 13 countries (22,002 participants). Thus creating an exceptional international representative sample. In analyzing those results, we argue that in order to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the Internet’s influence over individuals’ social lives; it is essential to consider the different types of social connections that might be influenced by the Internet. We assess the influence of Internet use over social interactions in separate life domains (e.g. with family members; friends; colleagues). Our analysis confirms that Internet usage can actually enhance the social lives of its users. Qualifications to the research are discussed while highlighting the different life domains in which we found significant correlations between Internet usage and increased social interactions.     

Effects of ruminal versus duodenal dosing of fish meal on ruminal fermentation and milk composition

Three midlactation Holstein cows with ruminal and duodenal cannulas were used in a 3 x 3 Latin square design to determine whether ruminal or postruminal alterations in metabolism were responsible for the changes in milk composition that frequently are associated with dietary fish meal. Cows were offered a diet of 60:40 forage to concentrate (aliquots at 6-h intervals) that was supplemented with isonitrogenous amounts of soybean meal (1.3 kg of DM/d) dosed into the rumen or fish meal (1.0 kg DM/d) dosed either into the rumen or into the duodenum. The DMI, ruminal NDF digestion, and flows of total N and microbial N to the duodenum decreased for cows receiving fish meal. Dietary N flow increased when fish meal was dosed into the rumen. Total concentration of ruminal VFA was greater for cows receiving the soybean meal treatment; however, treatment had no effect on the ratio of ruminal acetate plus butyrate to propionate. Milk and FCM yields were unaffected by treatment, but milk fat content decreased, and milk protein content increased when cows were supplemented with fish meal. The difference in mammary arteriovenous glucose difference decreased when cows were dosed with fish meal. Changes in plasma NEFA and triglycerides were small and inconsistent. Results from this experiment suggest that effects of fish meal on milk composition are due to postruminal alterations in metabolism.     

Of "Sympathy for the Devil" and a Question of Conscious versus Unconscious Spite: Comment on Shabad (2000).

This commentary takes up a problem raised by Peter Shabad (2000) (see record 2000-00917-004), who argues that for certain patients, symptomatic behavior is reflective of unconsciously spiteful feelings toward internalized objects. His article was inspired by Dostoyevsky's (1864/2001) famous novella "Notes From Underground," whose narrator is proud of his spiteful character, unlike Shabad's patients, who are entirely unaware that they harbor such feelings. Although Shabad lays out the dynamics as he understands them of his patients' unconscious spite, he never makes clear what it is that makes spiteful feelings explicit in the narrator of Dostoyevsky's novella and real-life individuals like him. Grating compensation of third-order fiber dispersion

Subpicosecond optical pulses propagating in single-mode fibers are severely distorted by third-order dispersion even at the fiber's zero-dispersion wavelength (λ₀). Using cross-correlation techniques, the authors measured the broadening of a 100-fs pulse to more than 5 ps after passing through 400 m of fiber near λ₀. The measured asymmetric and oscillatory pulse shape is in agreement with calculations. A grating and telescope apparatus was configured to simultaneously equalize both third- and second-order dispersion for wavelengths slightly longer than λ ₀. Nearly complete compensation has been demonstrated for fiber lengths of 400 m and 3 km of dispersion-shifted fiber at wavelengths of 1560-1580 nm. For the longer fibers, fourth-order dispersion due to the grating becomes important     

Effect of seminal plasma on implantation rates

Of 2774 consecutive, prospectively documented fractures of the distal radius, 225 (8 per cent) occurred as sports injuries, mainly in young men. Soccer produced the greatest number of wrist fractures with 112 cases (50 per cent). Skiing, dancing and rugby caused 12 per cent, 9 per cent and 7 per cent of all sporting wrist fractures respectively. Skiing, horseriding and dancing consistently resulted in more complex fractures. In soccer, synthetic pitches increased the likelihood of a fracture following a fall by a factor of five. Twelve per cent of fractures required further treatment because of instability leading to redisplacement. The complication rate was 14 per cent with the majority being cases of malunion (12 per cent). Of the 131 patients who returned a questionnaire, 72.5 per cent had returned to their original sport. This was influenced mainly by the patient's age and pre-injury standard of competition.
