Since researchers began studying the mechanism of flavonoids’ anticancer activity, little attention has been focused on the modulation of redox state in cells as a potential chemotherapeutic strategy. However, recent studies have begun identifying that the anticancer effect of flavonoids occurs both in their antioxidative activity which scavenges ROS and their prooxidative activity which generates ROS. Against this backdrop, this study attempts to achieve a comprehensive analysis of the individual and separate study findings regarding flavonoids’ modulation of redox state in cancer cells. It focuses on the mechanism behind the anticancer effect, and mostly on the modulation of redox potential by flavonoids such as quercetin, hesperetin, apigenin, genistein, epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), luteolin and kaempferol in both in vitro and animal models. In addition, the clinical applications of and bioavailability of flavonoids were reviewed to help build a treatment strategy based on flavonoids’ prooxidative potential. 相似文献

To characterize the thickness of a corrosive fluid system's coated facilities, such as pipes, tubes, tanks, and structural members, a complex ultrasonic transducer capable of measuring multilayered parts was fabricated and the time and frequency responses were evaluated. The target transducer was constructed with two active dual elements made from tape-cast PbNb2O6 sheets and an additional thin-film active element made from sol–gel spin-coated Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 films. After adjusting the properties of each active element, a complex transducer was assembled after matching the impedance of each element and considering the minimal interference between the active layers. The impulse response of the assembled complex transducer shows excellent characteristics. Buffalo milk proteins (casein, co-precipitate or whey protein concentrate) were phosphorylated with phosphorus oxychloride (POCl3) at three different pH values (5.0, 7.0 and 9.0). The solubilities of phosphorylated milk proteins were examined over the pH range 3.0–9.0 in water and ionic (0.1 m NaCl or 10–70 mm Ca2+) systems. The solubilities of buffalo milk proteins decreased at pH 3.0, while there was an increase in the solubilities of casein and co-precipitate near their isoelectric points upon phosphorylation. Solubilities of these phosphorylated milk proteins were pH dependent in 0.1 m NaCl but there was a decrease in their solubilities with increase in calcium ion concentration. This alteration could be due to the shifting of isoionic points of phosphorylated buffalo milk proteins towards acidic pH. 相似文献

The paper describes an approach taken to estimate the probabilities of failure associated with various railroad tasks to prevent accidents (principally collisions and derailments). These probabilities were estimated using an expert elicitation process that used partially relevant data available from a variety of databases and that were filtered and scaled to make them more directly relevant to the analyses being performed. A three-dimensional FE analysis of large deformations for impact loadings using tetrahedral elements
A three-dimensional dynamic program for the anaysis of large deformations in contact-penetration problems is developed using
the finite element Lagrangian method with explicit time integration. By incorporating a tetrahedral element, which allows
a single-point integration without a special hourglass control scheme, this program can be more effective to the present problem.
The position code algorithm is used to search contact surface. Eroding surfaces are also considered. The defense node algorithm
was slightly modified for the calculation of contact forces. A study of obliquity effects on metallic plate perforation and
ricochet processes in thin plates impacted by a sphere was conducted. It is well simulated that on separation of two parts
of the sphere, the portion still within the crater tends to perforate, while the portion in contact with the plate surface
ricochets. This deformation pattern is observed in experiments, especially at high obliquities. A long rod that impacts an
oblique steel plate at high impact velocity was also simulated in order to study the dynamics of the rod caused by the three
dimensional asymmetric contact. The agreement between simulated and experimental results is quite good. Fracture phenomena
occuring at high obliquity deserves further investigations.

This paper describes some of the key issues associated with the patterning of metal electrodes of sub-micron (especially at the critical dimension (CD) of 0.15 μm) dynamic random access memory devices. Due to reactive ion etching lag, the Pt etch rate decreased drastically below the CD of 0.20 μm and thus K-th storage node electrode with the CD of 0.15 μm could not be fabricated using the Pt electrodes. Accordingly, we have proposed novel techniques to surmountly-the above difficulties. We investigated the dependence of the toner charge-to-mass ratio (q/m) in a two-component electrophotographic developer on the shaking time, toner concentration (T/C), carrier sizes, and the carrier core and the coating materials, as well as the resulting print qualities in terms of print density, background density, tone reproduction, resolution, and dot gain. Four different sizes of spherical ferrite carriers, four different carrier coating materials, and an irregular iron carrier were used with two types of toner: 14 um red toner (NP-4080) and 8 um cyan toner (CLC-500). The q/m measurement by the blow-off method showed that the red toner charge was positive while the cyan toner charge was negative with these carriers. The toner q/m values, which depended on the shaking time and decreased with the increasing T/C were much more affected by the larger carrier and the smaller toner. The aim of this study was to investigate how intrauterine growth retardation affects body proportions in VLBW infants. The cohort consisted of 135 surviving and 80 deceased preterm infants weighing less than 1250 grams at birth. Gestational age varied between 24 and 36 weeks (mean age 29.7 and 27.5 weeks, respectively). Birth weight was more than 2 SD below the mean birth standard values in 32% of the surviving, and in 27% of the deceased infants. Reduction of weight, length and head circumference at birth was analysed using Z scores based on Swedish birth standards. Z scores of weight, length and head circumference were highly correlated in the surviving and the deceased infants (r = 0.78 to 0.94 and 0.65 to 0.97, respectively). Length was significantly more affected by growth retardation than weight. Weight and head circumference were proportionately reduced. Intrauterine growth retardation influences body proportions in VLBW infants differently than in larger preterm and term infants. 相似文献

Given the enormous size of the genome and that there are potentially many other types of measurements we need to do to understand it, it has become necessary to pick and choose one's targets to measure because it is still impossible to evaluate the entire genome all at once. What has emerged is a need to have rapidly customizable microarrays. There are two dominant methods to accomplish custom microarray synthesis, Affymetrix-like microarrays manufactured using light projection rather than semiconductor-like masks used by Affymetrix to mass manufacture their GeneChip/sup TM/ arrays now, or the ink-jet printing method employed by Agilent. The manufacture of these custom Affymetrix-like microarrays can now be done on a digital optical chemistry (DOC) machine developed at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and this method offers much higher feature numbers and feature density than is possible with ink-jet printed arrays. On a microarray, each feature contains a single genetic measurement. The initial DOC prototype has been described in several publications, but that has now led to a second-generation machine. This machine reliably produces a number of arrays daily, has been deployed against a number of biomedical questions, is being used in new ways and has also led to a number of spin-off technologies. 相似文献
