Optimized Schwarz methods without overlap for highly heterogeneous media

In this paper an original variant of the Schwarz domain decomposition method is introduced for heterogeneous media. This method uses new optimized interface conditions specially designed to take into account the heterogeneity between the sub-domains on each sides of the interfaces. Numerical experiments illustrate the dependency of the proposed method with respect to several parameters, and confirm the robustness and efficiency of this method based on such optimized interface conditions. Several mesh partitions taking into account multiple cross points are considered in these experiments.     

Physical design of the VCI wrappers for the on-chip packet-switched network named SPIN

This paper presents the physical design methodology of the VCI/SPIN wrappers. The challenge was the validation of the wrappers’ specification with Alliance CAD Tools.A wrapper is a standard gateway used by a subscriber to access an interconnect. Because there are as many wrappers as subscribers, it is relevant to have an estimation of the wrapper’s area, its frequency and then compare these results to the router’s.The interest to perform this study with academic tools is to show that commercial tools are not the unique way for experimentations.     

A modified three-surface elasto-plastic cap model and its numerical implementation

One of main problems in the numerical implementation of many elasto-plastic cap models is associated with the issue how to handle the corner regions, where loading surfaces intersect in non-smooth fashion. At these points elasto-plastic tangent operators could become singular which would cause considerable numerical difficulties. In this paper we present a modified elliptic cap model in which the surfaces intersect in a smooth manner and in this way there is no need for changing the original model parameters. Several numerical examples are presented which show a very good approximation of soil behavior and an excellent convergence of computed results for all possible stress paths.     

Oriented colorings of 2-outerplanar graphs

A graph G is 2-outerplanar if it has a planar embedding such that the subgraph obtained by removing the vertices of the outer face is outerplanar. The oriented chromatic number of an oriented graph H is defined as the minimum order of an oriented graph H^′ such that H has a homomorphism to H^′. In this paper, we prove that 2-outerplanar graphs are 4-degenerate. We also show that oriented 2-outerplanar graphs have a homomorphism to the Paley tournament QR₆₇, which implies that their (strong) oriented chromatic number is at most 67.     

3D Micro-PIXE at atmospheric pressure: A new tool for the investigation of art and archaeological objects

The paper describes a novel experiment characterized by the development of a confocal geometry in an external Micro-PIXE set-up. The position of X-ray optics in front of the X-ray detector and its proper alignment with respect to the proton micro-beam focus provided the possibility of carrying out 3D Micro-PIXE analysis. As a first application, depth intensity profiles of the major elements that compose the patina layer of a quaternary bronze alloy were measured. A simulation approach of the 3D Micro-PIXE data deduced elemental concentration profiles in rather good agreement with corresponding results obtained by electron probe micro-analysis from a cross-sectioned patina sample. With its non-destructive and depth-resolving properties, as well as its feasibility in atmospheric pressure, 3D Micro-PIXE seems especially suited for investigations in the field of cultural heritage.     

A Multicriteria Decision Support Methodology for Annual Rehabilitation Programs of Water Networks

Abstract:   This article provides an overview of a multicriteria decision support methodology for annual rehabilitation programs of water networks. A first set of criteria is formulated for the purpose of comparing and ranking rehabilitation projects. Each proposed criterion is a measure of a particular impact of the condition of a pipe. The ELECTRE TRI method is implemented for defining rehabilitation priorities . Two reference profiles are used to define the limits of three categories associated with three increasing priority levels. With these two reference profiles, applying the ELECTRE TRI method to an asset stock ( a set of pipes that are candidates for rehabilitation ) means assigning each pipe to one of six possible priority groups. A second set of criteria, based on the concept of efficiency, is proposed for comparing alternative rehabilitation programs ( subsets of the asset stock ).     

Formation of gold nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes by using an electroless plating method

Gold nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were obtained by using electroless plating technique. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy evidenced the high-density and homogeneous dispersion of spherical gold nanoparticles on the outer surfaces of the carbon nanotubes, with a sharp particle size distribution centered at around 3–4 nm of diameter. The resultant hybrid nanostructures have potential application for being used as novel gold nanocatalysts.     

Influence of washing and of heat-treatment conditions on the thermal stability of VPI-5

Thorough washing of a VPI-5 synthesized with n-dipropylamine as template improves greatly its thermal stability while no major change is observed in the template content. A detailed study of the influence of the pretreatment conditions shows that in order to obtain a high thermal stability (up to at least 960 °C) two parameters are of importance. The removal of both the template and the adsorbed water requires either a low heating rate at atmospheric pressure or a low pressure (less than 3 Torr) when the heating rate is 300 ° per hour.     

Poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate) containing pendant carboxylic groups for the preparation of nanoparticles aimed at drug transport and release

Copolymers of poly(3-hydroxyoctanoate) (PHO) with carboxylic groups in lateral chains have been prepared by chemical modification of unsaturated bacterial polyesters. The oxidation of the pendant alkenes is complete and important loss in molecular weight of polymer was observed. The presence of repeating units containing pendant carboxy groups in the proportion of 25% has enhanced hydrophilicity of these new polymeric structures. Nanoparticles have been prepared from PHO and two functionalized derivatives, characterized by electronic microscopy and compared in view of bioactive molecules transport and release.     

MOVPE grown Ga/sub 0.6/In/sub 0.4/Sb photodiodes for 2.55 mu m detection

Photodiodes with a long-wavelength cutoff extending out of 2.9 mu m have been fabricated from MOVPE-grown Ga/sub 0.6/In/sub 0.4/Sb homojunctions. These mesa devices without any passivation or antireflecting coating exhibit a peak efficiency as high as 43% at 2.60 mu m.<>
