This handbook sets out to examine literacy in its widest sense; to examine both the visual signs for linguistic forms, and the social and personal uses of these signs, from the mundane to the literary, both historically and currently. It aims to address a gap that it identifies in the literature: the lack of an authoritative text on literacy as a field in itself, and in providing such a text, further aims to provide scope for future interdisciplinary work. The book is divided into five parts (Literacy as a Scientific Subject, Literacy and Language, Literacy and Literatures, Literacy and Society, and Literacy and Education), described in the preface as representing “transformations in our understanding of literacy.” Overall, the handbook feels more like a set of separate chapters than an integrated work, with very little cross-referencing across the chapters. Effects of a 1-semester professional development (PD) intervention that included expert coaching with Head Start teachers were investigated in a randomized controlled trial with 88 teachers and 759 children. Differential effects of technologically mediated (remote) versus in-person (on-site) delivery of individualized coaching with teachers also were examined in a random assignment design. Hierarchical linear model analyses revealed positive PD intervention effects on general classroom environment (d = 0.99) and classroom supports for early literacy and language development (d = 0.92), and on children's letter knowledge (d = 0.29), blending skills (d = 0.18), writing (d = 0.17), and concepts about print (d = 0.22). No significant intervention effects on teaching practices and children's outcomes related to oral language were found. This article discusses a student-guided Instagram program for first-year English composition classes at the University of Montevallo during Fall 2013. The activity engaged aspects of critical pedagogy by placing value on students’ prior experiences as creators and users of information and encouraging a classroom environment guided by student input. Since the program was meant for students in their first semester, it was also designed to be fun and social. The Instagram program helped students encounter the unfamiliar academic library environment through the familiar medium of social media, alleviating library anxiety as they produced online content representing their experience. 相似文献
