Thermoplastic elastomeric composition based on maleic anhydride–grafted ground rubber tire

Ground rubber tire (GRT) powder was maleated in an internal mixer using maleic anhydride and dicumyl peroxide at 160°C. Maleated GRT was characterized by using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, wettability, and differential scanning calorimetry. The physical properties of the dynamically vulcanized 60 : 40, rubber : plastic composition based on acrylated high‐density polyethylene as the plastic phase and ethylene propylene diene rubber containing maleated GRT as the rubber phase were found to be greater than the corresponding composition containing nonmaleated GRT. 大渡河流域梯级电站统一调度的初步研究

实行流域梯级电站统一调度,是流域水电开发落实科学发展观的必然要求。经过国内外实践,实现流域统一调度的时机已渐成熟。大渡河流域水电开发有限公司结合流域水电开发实际,通过建立流域水雨情监测网,开展群库水、电、网多环节的大系统综合调度研究,流域梯级电站控制模式研究,流域供电范围及开发时序研究,流域规划环境影响评价研究,以及龚嘴、铜街子电站梯级调度实践,在流域梯级电站统一调度研究方面已取得了初步的成果。对流域梯级电站统一调度的相关政策法规以及与电网调度衔接等问题,提出了若干对策。     

Applicability of the flood‐pulse concept in a temperate floodplain river ecosystem: thermal and temporal components

Annual growth increments were calculated for blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) and flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) from the lower Mississippi River (LMR) to assess hypothesized relationships between fish growth and floodplain inundation as predicted by the Flood‐Pulse Concept. Variation in catfish growth increment was high for all age classes of both species, and growth increments were not consistently related to various measures of floodplain inundation. However, relationships became stronger, and usually direct, when water temperature was integrated with area and duration of floodplain inundation. Relationships were significant for four of six age classes for blue catfish, a species known to utilize floodplain habitats. Though similar in direction, relationships were weaker for flathead catfish, which is considered a more riverine species. Our results indicate the Flood‐Pulse Concept applies more strongly to temperate floodplain‐river ecosystems when thermal aspects of flood pulses are considered. We recommend that future management of the LMR should consider ways to ‘recouple’ the annual flood and thermal cycles. An adaptive management approach will allow further determination of important processes affecting fisheries production in the LMR. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Mapping the Characteristics of a 'Good' Play Therapist.

In this pilot study, concept mapping, a methodological approach combining qualitative and quantitative analytic strategies, was used to identify the therapist qualities, competencies, and skills necessary for effective play therapy outcomes as perceived by a sub-sample of 28 experienced play therapists who are members of the Association for Play Therapy (APT). The clusters associated with the therapeutic relationship and facilitative skills (e.g., empathy, warmth, and genuineness) were rated as the most essential skills to possess and also as the most difficult to develop. In contrast, the clusters associated with play therapy interventions and theories were rated as the least important skills to possess but as the easiest to acquire. LOW-CYCLE FATIGUE UNDER NON-PROPORTIONAL LOADING

A series of strain-controlled, low-cycle fatigue experiments have been conducted on 42CrMo steel under various loading paths including circular, square, cruciform, and rectangular paths. Present experiments have shown that there is additional hardening under non-proportional cyclic loading. Non-proportional cyclic additional hardening also results in a shorter life for multiaxial low cycle fatigue. A non-proportionality measure of strain path based on both a physical basis and macromechanical phenomena is proposed. The loading path effect on additional hardening is also described well. Low-cycle fatigue damage accumulation and the evolution process under non-proportional loading is analysed via the Continuum Damage Mechanics Model of Chaboche. A non-proportinality measure is introduced in the damage evolution equation and a modified Coffin-Manson type formula is derived. A novel fatigue life prediction approach based on the critical-plane concept of Brown and Miller is proposed.     

Familiarity and plausibility in conceptual combination: Reply to Gagné and Spalding (2006).

E. J. Wisniewski and G. L. Murphy (see record 2004-22496-015) suggested that the apparent effects of relation frequency in C. L. Gagné and E. J. Shoben's (1997; see record 1997-02349-004) conceptual combination experiments could be explained by differences between the familiarity and plausibility of their stimuli (noun-noun phrases). However, C. L. Gagné and T. L. Spalding (see record 2006-20573-017) argued that Wisniewski and Murphy's measures of plausibility and frequency are both sensitive to relation frequency. They also suggested that the stimuli were mostly novel, such that differences in familiarity could not explain Gagné and Shoben's findings. The current authors focus on the theoretical rationale for the plausibility and familiarity variables, arguing that the original interpretation of their findings is correct.
