P–I diagram method for combined failure modes of rigid-plastic beams

Closed-form solutions of pressure-impulse (P–I) diagrams for simply supported and fully clamped rigid-plastic beams subjected to impact load are developed. Two failure categories, i.e., bending failure and shear failure, are considered and the responses of the beams are analyzed based on five transverse velocity profiles. With proper failure criteria, the critical P–I equations for bending and shear failure are derived. After the simplification of the critical P–I equations, the influences of the shear-to-bending strength ratio and the boundary conditions on the P–I diagrams are discussed. The results are compared with those based on a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) model. It is shown that the proposed P–I diagram method can be conveniently applied to assess beam damage extents and damage patterns. Especially, the P–I diagrams have good agreement with those based on an elastic, perfectly plastic model when severe damage occurs.

Failure analysis of hollow glasses The failure analysis is very important to clarify damages of hollow glasses. Damages of glass bottle through over pressure are very often linked with damages to persons. This is the reason why the causal research is from particular importance. Different surface characteristics of glass fragments as well as the fracture pattern give hints to the direction of the crack, the stress just before breakage and the reason of stress. A reconstruction of the bottle is a further helpful instrument for cause studies. The difference of the various characteristics of the surface will be explained. Further on there will be discussed different reasons and mechanism of fracture.

Ventricular arrhythmia exhibits considerable within-subject variability that cannot be attributed to clinical status alone. This investigation examined the extent to which cardiac arrhythmia was associated with psychological and physical factors assessed during the hour preceding arrhythmic or nonarrhythmic activity. Approximately twice hourly, 46 patients randomly completed a diary assessing mood and physical symptoms during 24-hr electrocardiographic monitoring. Greater negative emotion was associated with increased arrhythmia. Additionally, greater negative emotion was significantly associated with increased arrhythmia among participants in a low left ventricular ejection fraction group (LVEF).
