Epoxy, prepared through aminomethyl 3,5,5‐trimethylcyclohexylamine hardening of diglycidylether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA) prepolymer, toughened with polycarbonate (PC) in different proportions, and reinforced with carbon fiber, was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, tensile and interlaminar shear strength testing, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A single glass transition temperature was found in all compositions of the epoxy/PC blend system. The tensile properties of the blend were found to be better than that of the pure epoxy matrix. They increased with PC content up to 10%, beyond which they decreased. The influence of carbon fiber orientation on the mechanical properties of the composites was studied, where the fiber content was kept constant at 68 wt %. Composites with 45° fiber orientation were found to have very weak mechanical properties, and the mechanical properties of the blend matrix composites were found to be better than those of the pure epoxy matrix composites. The fracture and surface morphologies of the composite samples were characterized by SEM. Tests showed that joints made with highly resinous apitong were about 40% weaker than similar joints made with non-resinous apitong. Two surface modification methods—plasma surface treatment and chemical agent treatment—were used to investigate their effects on the surface properties of ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers. In the analyses, performed using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, changes in weight, and scanning electron microscope observations, demonstrated that the two fiber‐surface‐modified composites formed between UHMWPE fiber and epoxy matrix exhibited improved interfacial adhesion and slight improvements in tensile strengths, but notable decreases in elongation, relative to those properties of the composites reinforced with the untreated UHMWPE fibers. In addition, three kinds of epoxy resins—neat DGEBA, polyurethane‐crosslinked DGEBA, and BHHBP‐DGEBA—were used as resin matrices to examine the tensile and elongation properties of their UHMWPE fiber‐reinforced composites. An epoxy matrix system modified by diglycidylether‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (DGETPDMS) and bismaleimide (BMI) was developed. Epoxy systems modified with 4, 8, and 12% (by wt) of DGETPDMS were made using epoxy resin and DGETPDMS, with diaminodiphenylmethane as the curing agent. The DGETPDMS‐toughened epoxy systems were further modified with 4, 8, and 12% (by wt) of BMI, namely (N,N′‐bismaleimido‐4,4′‐diphenylmethane). DGETPDMS/BMI/epoxy matrices were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and heat deflection temperature analysis. The matrices, in the form of castings, were characterized for their mechanical properties, viz. tensile strength, flexural strength, and impact test, as per ASTM methods. Mechanical studies indicate that the introduction of DGETPDMS into epoxy resin improves the impact strength, with reduction in tensile strength, flexural strength, and glass transition temperature, whereas the incorporation of BMI into epoxy resin enhances the mechanical and thermal properties according to its percentage content. Polypropylene hybrid composites reinforced with short glass fiber (SGF) and toughened with styrene–ethylene butylenes–styrene (SEBS) elastomer were prepared using extrusion and injection‐molding techniques. Moreover, hybrids compatibilized with SEBS‐grafted maleic anhydride (SEBS‐g‐MA) and hybrid compatibilized with PP grafted with maleic anhydride (PP‐g‐MA) were also fabricated. The matrix of the latter hybrid was designated as mPP and consisted of 95% PP and 5% PP‐g‐MA. Tensile dilatometry was carried out to characterize the fracture mechanisms of hybrid composites. Dilatometric responses showed that the elastic deformation was the dominant deformation mechanism for the SGF/SEBS/PP and SGF/SEBS‐g‐MA/PP hybrids. However, cavitation deformation prevailed over shearing deformation for both hybrids at the higher strain regime. The cavitation strain resulted from the debonding of glass fibers and from the crazing of the matrix in the SGF/SEBS/PP hybrid. In contrast, the cavitation was caused by the debonding of SEBS particles from the matrix of the SGF/SEBS‐g‐MA/PP hybrid. The use of PP‐g‐MA resulting in elastic deformation was the main mode of deformation in the low‐strain region for the SGF/SEBS/mPP and SEBS/SEBS‐g‐MA/mPP hybrids; thereafter, shearing appeared to dominate at the higher strain regime. This was attributed to the MA functional group improving the bonding between the SGF and PP.
