Semantic extension possibilities in the proposed new fortran

The next revision of the standard Fortran language, commonly referred to as Fortran 8x, has now been published, at least in draft form. It is therefore possible for some of its new features to be investigated and the type of programming that can be expected when implementations appear to be explored. This paper looks at the scope provided by the proposed new features for 'semantic extension' of the language. The capability is illustrated by way of example code which could provide an extended-precision numeric facility if implemented. The new linguistic constructs that permit this type of approach to software provision are described as they are used.     

Experimental-analytical methods of the investigating the effect of complexing reagents on platinum flotation

The paper considers the studies into the hydrophobic properties of platinum and platinum arsenide, sperrylite, in the solution with added complexing reagents by using the method of measuring the force of the air bubble abstraction from the mineral surface. The effect of these complexing reagents on the chemical properties of sperrylite and pyrrhotine is analyzed. A new-developed procedure for treatment of pyrrhotine by chloroplatinic acid is presented, and the comparative flotation of natural pyrrhotine and platinum-pretreated pyrrhotine with the complexing reagents is described. The collecting properties of diisobutyl dithiophosphinate for platinum are determined, and the use of this reagent as an additional collector for platinum-group metals is confirmed in the course of the experimental flotation of platinum-bearing copper-nickel ore samples. __________ Translated from Fiziko-Tekhnicheskie Problemy Razrabotki Poleznykh Iskopaemykh, No. 3, pp. 68–75, May–June, 2008.     

浅析建筑设计创新思维

建筑设计是指对人们所需要的生产、生活,文化、娱乐等空间的创作过程,是针对建筑内部空间与外部空间而进行的一种人为活动。在建筑设计中,创新思维是大部分设计者都应该有的思维方式,其过程是为实现设计者的设想而做的各种方法的探索。它是逻辑思维和形象思维相结合,现实主义和浪漫主义相结合的创作方法。它建立在对设计条件深刻分析和正确理解的前题下,抓住问题的关键和实质,以丰富的想象力和在反复思考中获得的灵感,运用建筑语言所特有的表达方式和构图技巧,创作出具有深刻思想和卓越艺术性的、完美统一的建筑形象。本文结合多年工作实践,对当前建筑设计提出了新的设计思想,并从元概念出发提倡了一种新的建筑设计思维。从而让以后的建筑设计更具艺术性,且让人们的生活环境更加抽象化、层次化、条理化。     

混乱之美与复数场所的集结

本文主要分析了筱原一男于1976年设计的“上原的住宅”。筱原自己将其一系列住宅作品按照样式进行了排序。在对样式变迁进行整理的基础上，本文对“第3样式”的初期作品“上原的住宅”中筱原的思想从实际形态和架构进行考察，并通过“裸形的事物”、“错位”等关键词将这一作品定位为从抽象空间向具体空间的转变。与这一转变并行的是，从“传统”到“都市”的文脉转变。“上原的住宅”具有混乱的美与复数场所的集结，以此作为本文结论。     

Understanding unfamiliar words in young, young-old, and old-old adults: Inferential processing and the abstraction-deficit hypothesis.

Previous research suggests that older adults derive interpretations of unfamiliar words that are less precise than those of young adults (D. McGinnis & E. M. Zelinski, 2000). Thirty-one adults aged 18-37, 27 aged 65-74, and 28 aged 75-87 read passages containing unfamiliar words (1 per passage) and were asked to think aloud during reading. After reading each passage, participants selected meaning-relevant cues and rated the quality of 4 definition options. Compared with the 2 younger groups, the oldest group rated thematic and irrelevant definitions significantly higher, and their think-aloud protocols included more generalized inferences. Results pertaining to cue selection were not significant. Taken together, these results suggest that age differences in meaning derivation may be related to inferential processing that is overgeneralized, providing support for the abstraction-deficit hypothesis. A Logical Model of Conceptual Integrity in Data Integration

Conceptual integrity is required for the result of data integration to be cohesive and sensible. Compromised conceptual integrity results in “semantic faults,” which are commonly blamed for latent integration bugs. A logical model of conceptual integrity in data integration and a simple example application are presented. Unlike constructive models that attempt to prevent semantic faults, this model allows both correct and incorrect integrations to be described. Imperfect legacy systems can therefore be modeled, allowing a more formal analysis of their flaws and the possible remedies.

Biased Language Use in Stereotype Maintenance: The Role of Encoding and Goals.

In 4 studies, the authors investigated the relative impact of biased encoding of information and communication goals on biased language use. A category label (linguistic expectancy bias, Study 1) or a group label (linguistic intergroup bias, Study 2) was presented either before or after a story that participants were asked to communicate. Biased language use only emerged when participants learned about the group membership of the actor or the category label before hearing the story. However, communication goals had an effect on language use at the retrieval stage, independent of encoding (Studies 3 and 4). Although communication goal effects seemed to overwhelm encoding effects, encoding still influenced language use under externally imposed time pressure (Study 3) and self-imposed time constraints (Study 4). This research reaffirms the importance of both cognitive and communicative processes in stereotype maintenance and highlights the conditions under which they each operate. Restructuring for style

An older FORTRAN program is restructured to a style that is related to data abstraction and object-oriented programming. The restructuring process, which can be applied to many older procedural languages, is driven by goals that are related to clarity of function. Possible benefits include maintainability and a better understanding of the original program.
