Editor’s column.

This editorial column comments on an issue of the Consulting Psychology Journal devoted to the topic of executive coaching. According to the author, although this area of consultation has been hot for several years now, very little is being published about this practice area in scholarly journals. This journal will be leading the way in delivering state-of-the-art information for the consulting community. The column concludes with some information on some major Division 13 events. President’s column: "The Catalyst Division" vision: Strengthening our core.

Driven by individual consumer demand for balance in work and family lifestyles, organizational demand for effectiveness and total quality management (TQM), advances in psychological knowledge and consulting know-how, competent practitioners, and a strong American Psychological Association (APA), the practice of consulting psychology is growing. This, in turn, increases the demands placed on the Division of Consulting Psychology and creates the need for a strong infrastructure to serve its constituents. During the 1995-1996 year, we will strengthen our core in the following five areas: committees, constituents, knowledge, practice, and training. Application of an alternative contractor selection model

The results described confirm the thorough assessment implemented by the model and an output mechanism able to highlight key contractor characteristics. The exercise also supports the contention, that examination of contractors should aim to establish project performance potential and rely less on estimated project cost (tender sum).

Executive coaching and consulting: "Different strokes for different folks".

Increasing frustration with the politics and economics of traditional mental health care has led many psychologists to consider shifting to or adding executive coaching as a core competency in their practices. Experience with work-related issues in clinical practice makes this appear to be a logical extension of traditional clinical and counseling work. There are many types of executive coaching and consulting, however, and only some of these relate to traditional mental health services. The authors propose a 4-category model of executive coaching defined by the intersection of focus (business vs. personal) and technique (brief-directive vs. extended-Socratic). Developmental coaching, which addresses long-standing behavior problems in both personal and work settings, is most likely to fit with traditional psychological training. Training or experience in the upper levels of the business world is essential to developing the capability to help corporate leaders with a broad range of needs and situations in which they find themselves.
