Total serum Ca dynamics and urine pH levels were evaluated after prophylactic treatment of subclinical hypocalcemia after parturition in 33 multiparous Jersey × Holstein crossbreed cows. Cows were blocked according to their calcemic status at the time of treatment [normocalcemic (8.0–9.9 mg/dL; n = 15) or hypocalcemic (5.0–7.9 mg/dL; n = 18)] and randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatments: control [no Ca supplementation (n = 11)]; intravenous Ca [Ca-IV (n = 11), 500 mL of 23% calcium gluconate (10.7 g of Ca and 17.5 g of boric acid as a solubilizing agent; Durvet, Blue Springs, MO)]; or oral Ca [Ca-Oral (n = 11), 1 oral bolus (Bovikalc bolus, Boehringer Ingelheim, St. Joseph, MO) containing CaCl2 and CaSO4 (43 g of Ca) 2 times 12 h apart]. Total serum Ca levels were evaluated at 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 36, and 48 h, and urine pH was evaluated at 0, 1, 12, 24, 36, and 48 h after treatment initiation. Total serum Ca levels were higher for Ca-IV than for control and Ca-Oral cows at 1, 2, and 4 h after treatment initiation, but lower than Ca-Oral cows at 20, 24, and 36 h and lower than control cows at 36 and 48 h. At 1 h after treatment initiation, when serum Ca levels for Ca-IV cows peaked (11.4 mg/dL), a greater proportion of Ca-IV (n = 8) cows had total serum Ca levels >10 mg/dL than control (n = 0) and Ca-Oral (n = 1) cows. At 24 h after treatment initiation, when Ca-IV cows reached the total serum Ca nadir (6.4 mg/dL), a greater proportion of Ca-IV (n = 10) cows had serum Ca levels <8 mg/dL than control (n = 5) and Ca-Oral (n = 2) cows. Treatment, time, and treatment × time interaction were significant for urine pH. Mean urine pH was lower for Ca-Oral cows (6.69) than for control (7.52) and Ca-IV (7.19) cows. Urine pH levels at 1 h after treatment were lower for Ca-IV cows compared with both control and Ca-Oral cows, a finding likely associated with the iatrogenic administration of boric acid added as a solubilizing agent of the intravenous Ca solution used. At 12, 24, and 36 h, urine pH levels were lower for Ca-Oral cows compared with both control and Ca-IV cows. This was expected because the oral Ca supplementation used (Bovikalc) is designed as an acidifying agent. Wide fluctuations in blood Ca were observed after prophylactic intravenous Ca supplementation. The implications for milk production and animal health, if any, of these transient changes in total serum Ca have yet to be evaluated.  相似文献

One of the striking features of Kerala state is the continuous chain of lagoons or backwaters existing along the coastal region. The backwaters support rich and diverse life forms and provide crucial nurseries for shrimps and fishes as well as habitat for oysters, clams and mussels which later enrich the ocean and make Kerala the principal exporter of marine products amongst the states of India. The shallow fringes of the backwaters and the channels drawn from them are used for retting of coconut husk. It adversely affects the productivity of the backwaters and is harmful to marine fisheries. The retting of coconut husks in backwaters is brought about by the pectinolytic activity of micro organisms especially bacteria fungi and yeasts degrading the fibre binding materials of the husk and liberating large quantities of organic matter and chemicals into the environment, including pectin, pentosan, tannins, polyphenols, etc. Consequently hydrogen sulphide, phosphate and nitrate contents increase while dissolved oxygen and community diversity of plankton decrease in the ambient waters during the retting process. The present study is to evaluate pollution due to coir retting activity and its influence on quality of water and estuarine flora and fauna.  相似文献

An evaluation and inventory study on the natural vegetation cover and its diversity was carried out on the forest vegetation of the district of Saïda. The floristic diversity of our study area revealed the existence of 397 taxa belonging to 64 families and 271 genera. The most important families are Asteraceae (42 genera), Fabaceae (25 genera), Brassicaceae (22 genera) and Poaceae (22 genera). The category of rare taxa represents 13% of the studied flora (52 taxa). In our study area, we have counted 35 endemic regional species of which 19 species are endemic Algerian-Moroccan, and 3 species are strictly endemic to Algeria. Among the taxa analysed, 02 are included in the IUCN Red List, and 12 are on the Algerian list of protected non-cultivated plant species.  相似文献

The study explored the effects of intensive urbanization on urban plant diversity and landscape pattern. An inventory of plant species in managed green spaces in the nine urban districts of Guangzhou (south China) with varied development history was conducted. The relationships among species richness, diversity and urban development were analysed by community ecology attributes, cluster analysis, growth-form differentiation and district fidelity indices, and statistical tests. The 1055 vascular species were dominated by a small number of common evergreen species, accompanied by many rare species. By species richness, tree was the dominant growth form, followed by herb and shrub. Species richness and diversity were slightly below urban-fringe secondary forests. Old and young districts offered disparate conditions for species enrichment to establish urban landscape patterns with divergent floristic and growth-form assemblages. Urban species profile and vegetation landscapes were mainly influenced by planning and management of the urban landscape and changing landscape fashion.  相似文献

The pellicles formation, microbial changes and lactic acid utilisation during the aerobic deterioration of Sichuan pickle were discussed in this study. By plate counting, chemical detection and HPLC analysis, the aerobic deterioration of Sichuan pickle was featured by microbial growth, pellicle formation, lactic acid decrease and pH elevation. Bacteria dominated in pellicles and the pellicles present morphological change from smooth to wrinkly along with the aerobic deteriorating process. Nine species of bacteria were identified and responsible for the pellicle formation. Combined with Lactobacillus plantarum, eight pellicle‐forming bacteria were the dominant lactic acid consuming organisms in deteriorating Sichuan pickle. Especially under the harsh acid condition of the early deteriorating period, Lb. plantarum, pellicle‐forming bacteria Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, B. subtilis and Citrobacter freundii participated in the pellicles, utilised lactic acid and increased the brine pH effectively. Sequence analysis of 16S rDNA libraries suggested that the resulting pH of 4.8–5.0 initiated the growth of more undesirable organisms, and the pellicle bacterial diversity changed greatly compared with that in the early deteriorating period. The study indicated the important role of pellicles in the initiation of Sichuan pickle's aerobic deterioration and enhanced our ability to understand and potentially control the aerobic deterioration.  相似文献

安徽歙县连香树群落中有种子植物52科、106属、128种(含种下分类单位).其中,裸子植物2科2属4种,分别占种子植物的3.8%、1.9%、3.1%;被子植物50科104属124种,分别占种子植物的96.2%、98.1%、96.9%.在各类属的地理成分中,以温带地理成分占较大优势.属的地理成分反映了群落区系的温带性质,并与其它各地的植物区系如热带植物区系有着广泛联系.  相似文献

The antimicrobial activity of donkey milk was initially scanned against nine microorganisms using agar diffusion assay, and was further investigated via in situ inhibition by monitoring the growth of Salmonella choleraesuis (CGMCC 1.1859) and Shigella dysenteriae (CGMCC 1.1869) in it. The changes of microflora of donkey milk during prolonged storage at 4 and 20 °C were also studied. The results of the agar diffusion showed that S. choleraesuis and S. dysenteriae were the most sensitive strains towards the antimicrobial activity of donkey milk. In situ test revealed that the donkey milk exerted a definite bactericidal activity against S. dysenteriae and the viable counts decreased to below detectable level in a 1-ml sample at 20 °C. In the microbiological flora analysis, initial raw donkey milk contained a low microbial content. At 20 °C, lactic acid bacteria, coliforms and fungi grew well in donkey milk to give a total number of 6.66 log cfu/ml, 5.88 and 2.95, respectively, after 24 h storage. At 4 °C, no significant changes of microflora were observed after 96 h except coliforms which gave an 1 log increase.  相似文献

Riparian plant communities are shaped by gradients of disturbance intensity and frequency and resource availability. Reservoir operation can alter the composition and abundance of riparian vegetation by changing the flood regime and by trapping fine sediments and associated nutrients within the reservoir system. We examined differences in herbaceous species richness, abundance and composition in Populus‐Salix stands along an unregulated and regulated reach of a river in semi‐arid Arizona, contrasted flood inundation frequency and edaphic conditions (soil moisture, nutrients and texture) between the reaches, and interpreted the vegetation differences in light of observed differences in environmental conditions. Flooding frequency was similar between reaches, but the proportion of fine textured soils in the unregulated reach was nearly double that of the regulated reach and soil nutrient levels were up to three times higher in the unregulated reach. Herbaceous cover and richness were consistently lower in the regulated reach, with between‐reach differences greatest during dry seasons. These patterns suggest that an edaphic‐based change in resource availability is the principal pathway by which river damming is altering herbaceous vegetation in this system. Our results demonstrate that sediment transport within riparian corridors is important for maintenance of herbaceous communities and that restoration of flow regimes alone may be insufficient to restore herbaceous flora on some regulated reaches.
