The introduction of residual surface stresses into a material can change the strength distribution simply due to variability in the stress intensity factor of surface cracks. This variability arises from the distribution in surface (critical) crack lengths. A fracture mechanics approach was used to determine the influence of surface compression on the average strength and the standard deviation of the strength distribution. The strengths of the stress-free samples were assumed to fit a twoparameter Weibull distribution, and the increases in strength resulting from the surface compression were determined using fracture mechanics. It was determined from the analysis that the standard deviation/average strength ratio (coefficient of variation) initially increases, passes through a maximum, and ultimately reaches a plateau value below the initial value, as one increases the depth of surface compression. The maximum increase in the strength scatter occurs when the depth of the surface compression is approximately equal to the characteristic crack size. These changes were found to be dependent on the magnitude of the surface stress, as well as the characteristic strength, Weibull modulus, and fracture toughness of the stress-free material. 相似文献

A series of polymers based on methylmethacrylate, butylacrylate, and ω‐perfluorooctylalkylacrylate were prepared by radical polymerization. By changing both the length of the hydrocarbon spacer, between the fluorinated chain and the ester function of the fluorinated monomer, and its concentration, the surface properties of the resulting terpolymers were greatly influenced. Polymers containing small amounts of fluorinated comonomer units had considerably reduced surface energies compared to the copolymer poly (methylmethacrylate‐co‐butylacrylate) taken as reference. Strong and durable adhesive bonds may be made between polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and either cyanoacrylate (CA) or epoxy adhesives, if the PTFE surface is modified by the use of a “primer” such as triphenylphosphine (TPP) or diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM). The primer mixes with the PTFE surface, and the modified surface is then capable of forming an interphase, tens to hundreds of nanometers thick, where interpenetration of the adhesive and adherend occurs. Using CA adhesives, PTFE/CA/PTFE block compression shear bond strength (ASTM D4501-85) of over 10 MPa can be achieved, with failure occurring cohesively. Initial work with epoxy adhesives indicates that the use of DDM primer gives adhesive bonds comparable in strength with those produced by modification of the fluoropolymer surface by sodium naphthalenide. 相似文献

为了利用植物油生产可再生的绿色能源——生物柴油,文章利用Novo435固定化脂肪酶,在无有机溶剂存在下催化菜籽油与甲醇酯交换合成生物柴油。利用响应面实验设计和分析方法对菜籽油的酯交换反应条件进行优化,得到了最佳工艺条件:醇油摩尔比1.5∶1,反应温度52℃,搅拌转速200 r/min,脂肪酶与油脂的质量比为10%,反应时间10 h,在此工艺条件下油脂的酯交换率达到48%(理论为50%)。理论甲醇量分3批加入,反应36 h后菜籽油的总酯交换率达到95%(理论酯交换率为100%)。每批试验后利用有机溶剂对脂肪酶进行清洗,然后继续反应,连续使用10个批次,油脂的酯交换率基本未变。 相似文献

Pillared clays (PC) generally present textural complexity, geometrical constraints and possible chemical heterogeneity by pillaring. As far as surface area and porosity measurements by physical adsorption of nitrogen are concerned, this overall complexity introduces interpretation difficulties. We consider two aspects of this problem in pillared clays.The textural complexity stems from the distribution of charge density, from the deformation of the host layers and from their entanglement. The microtexture is controlled by the wet preparation chemistry, to a large extent by the drying method as examplified by the titanium pillared montmorillonites.The geometrical constraints arise from the fact that the interlamellar space of the PC is (so far) microporous or just mesoporous. The small distance between the layers, of the order of one or a few molecular diameters, is therefore expected to perturb the arrangement of the pore filling molecules. The molecular confinement is a major source of underestimation of the total pore volume in the interlamellar space. It makes the surface area determination difficult and of little physical significance. Probably microporosity values are more valuable criterion of pillaring as shown in the titanium pillared samples.In addition to these two aspects, one has also to consider a possible chemical heterogeneity arising from the simultaneous presence of pillars, exchangeable ions and precipitated species. In a field study P and K uptake by two corn (Zea mays L.) genotypes which differed in root growth was investigated. The effect of differences in root growth on P and K uptake was assessed using a mechanistic-mathematical model which describes nutrient uptake by growing plant roots in soil. Nitrogen was applied at 0 and 227 kg ha–1 to Pioneer 3732 and B73xMo17 corn grown on Raub silt loam (fine-silty, mixed, mesic Aquic Argiudoll) and at 227 kg N ha–1 to these two genotypes on Chalmers silt loam (finesilty, mixed, mesic, Typic Haplaquoll). Root growth and P and K uptake by the two corn genotypes was measured 31, 47, 75 and 91 d after planting on the Raub and 31, 47, 61 and 75 d after planting on the Chalmers soil.Root growth and P and K uptake by B73xMo17 was greater than that of Pioneer 3732 on N-fertilized Raub soil. On Chalmers soil the difference in root growth between the two genotypes resulted in an increase in K but not P uptake. The higher soil P level of the Chalmers appears to have offset possible differences in P uptake due to root size. There were no differences between the two genotypes in either the percentage of roots with root hairs, or the density or length of root hairs. Phosphorus and K uptake calculated with the simulation models for both corn genotypes on both soils over each of three growth periods agreed with observed P (Y = 0.68X + 1.71; r = 0.944**) and K (Y = 0.88X + 15.52; r = 0.928**) uptake. Differences in P and K uptake between B73xMo17 and Pioneer 3732 resulted primarily from the difference in root growth in the topsoil.
