Accurate closed-form expressions for the electromagnetic parameters of the shielded split ring line

Based on rigorous analysis of finite element method (FEM), moment method (MoM), and curves fitting techniques, a set of closed-form formulas for the characteristic impedance and the primary (L and C) parameters of the shielded split ring line, are presented. The general expressions give a good accuracy for a wide-range of discontinuity angles and are suitable for all shielded split ring lines which have an outer–inner conductors radius ratio between 2 and 10. These expressions can be easily implemented in CAD simulation tools, to design many components as RF resonators, filters, transmission lines, for wireless communication and probes for material characterization. The results of the design of an RF resonator using the shielded split ring line are presented.     

Adjustments to the correction for attenuation.

With respect to the often-present covariance between error terms of correlated variables, D. W. Zimmerman and R. H. Williams's (1977) adjusted correction for attenuation estimates the strength of the pairwise correlation between true scores without assuming independence of error scores. This article focuses on the derivation and analysis of formulas that perform the same function for partial and part correlation coefficients. Values produced by these formulas lie closer to the actual true-score coefficient than do the observed-score coefficients or those obtained by using C. Spearman's (1904) correction for attenuation. The new versions of the formulas thus allow analysts to use hypothetical values for error-score correlations to estimate values for the partial and part correlations between true scores while disregarding the independence-of-errors assumption. Ordinal Judgments and Summation of Nonvisible Sets of Food Items by Two Chimpanzees and a Rhesus Macaque.

Two chimpanzees and a rhesus macaque rapidly learned the ordinal relations between 5 colors of containers (plastic eggs) when all containers of a given color contained a specific number of identical food items. All 3 animals also performed at high levels when comparing sets of containers with sets of visible food items. This indicates that the animals learned the approximate quantity of food items in containers of a given color. However, all animals failed in a summation task, in which a single container was compared with a set of 2 containers of a lesser individual quantity but a greater combined quantity. This difficulty was not overcome by sequential presentation of containers into opaque receptacles, but performance improved if the quantitative difference between sizes was very large. Relative Numerousness Judgment and Summation in Young and Old Western Lowland Gorillas.

The relationship between age, relative numerousness judgment, and summation was investigated in 11 Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). Experiments 1 and 2 evaluated the gorillas' ability to select the larger of 2 food quantities before and with training. The majority of gorillas did not reliably select the larger quantity in Experiment 1 until receiving training to do so in Experiment 2. Experiment 3 evaluated their ability to select the larger of 2 pairs of quantities. All gorillas selected the larger pair more often than chance, and the old were less accurate and slower than were the young. For most gorillas, performance in relative numerousness judgment with training and summation was comparable with previous reports in chimpanzees and orangutans.
