Judgment: The Foundation of Professional Success.

Lists of core competencies or critical capabilities are popular and plentiful. This article makes the case that a single core competency or critical capability accounts for professional success: the exercise of judgment. Judgment is the critical determinant of the quality of professional decisions, actions, and evaluations. Practical models of judgment are presented. The elements and dynamics of judgment are detailed. Individual, group, and organization implications are explored. Coaching and consulting interventions are explained. The use of the scanning electron microscope in the determination of the mineral composition of Ballachulish slate

Slate is a fine-grained, low-grade metamorphic rock derived from argillaceous sediments or occasionally volcanic ash. Although most slates contain mainly quartz, chlorite and white mica, they vary considerably in their durability, some lasting centuries while others fail after a few years of service. A detailed characterisation of their mineralogy is required for the assessment of performance, and to establish the provenance of a used slate. A combination of methods was used to examine Ballachulish slates; XRD analysis to determine the principal minerals present, XRF analysis to determine the total chemical composition, and scanning electron microscopy to determine the chemical composition of individual minerals. It was found that the white mica in Ballachulish slate is phengite and the chlorite is ripidolite. Feldspar is present as albite and carbonate as ferroan dolomite. Several accessory minerals were also identified, including chloritoid, monzonite and zircon. There was considerable variation in the ratio of the principal minerals, making it impossible to identify used slates by this criterion. Instead, chemical composition of the individual minerals, and possibly key accessory minerals, should be used to determine the provenance of slates.

Analysis of adhesive bonded composite lap joints with transverse stitching

The effect of transverse stitching on the stresses in the adhesive is investigated using an adhesive sandwich model with nonlinear adhesive properties and a transverse stitching model for adhesive bonded composite single-lap and double-lap joints. Numerical results indicate that, among all stitching parameters, thread pretension and stitch density have significant effect on the peel stresses in the adhesive; increase in the thread pretension and the stitch density leads to a decrease in peel stress in the adhesive, while an increase in other parameters generally results in a negligible reduction in peel stress. The effect of stitching was found to be negligible on the shear stresses in the adhesive. Thus it is concluded that stitching is effective for the joints where peel stresses are critical and ineffective for those where shear stresses are critical.     

Probabilistic linear models for multiresolution estimation in gray-level images

A multiresolution analysis of digital gray-level images is presented. A gray-level multi-scale framework is determined from two main assumptions: the gray scale is binary at the finest spatial resolution, and the gray levels of composed regions are obtained additively. In order to interrelate the gray-level histograms of the same image at different resolutions, probabilistic linear models are developed, which are then applied for estimation. Linear-optimization theory is used as a way of constructing such models. A general procedure for image processing is sketched, based on gray-level estimation. A versatile algorithm for nonlinear filtering is derived. 文章采用中心点火管结构的实验装置研究了黑火药的点传火性能。用低速爆轰 (L VD)中心点火管来点燃黑火药时 ,1# ～ 3# 大粒黑药的传火速度为 70 0 m· s-1～ 80 0 m· s-1数量级 ,燃烧波宽度在 3.1ms～ 3.5 ms,最大压力峰值 :1# 为 36 .4 MPa,2 # 为 2 4 .0 MPa,3# 为 38.0 MPa。用普通中心点火管点燃黑火药时 ,2 # 、3# 和钝化 2 # 大粒黑的传火速度分别为 6 1.2 m· s-1、6 8.2 m·s-1和 4 0 .1m· s-1,最大燃烧波宽度分别为 9.2 ms、6 .3ms和 9.5 ms。燃烧波表明 ,L VD中心传火管与普通中心传火管相比较 ,在传火管的不同位置处 ,前者的 P- t曲线一致性远高于后者。
