Have it your way and mine: The theory of styles

Olsen is right to note what can be done with a good theory and the right machine. His particular theory, however, is not transferable to literary studies. If we need a new model, I would suggest that cognitive science can provide a few interesting ones. I have begun to do some work based on David Marr's VISION, in which he hypothesizes two levels of processing within the visual module. My speculation has been on the parallel existence of distinguishable levels of conceptual or language organization which would correspond to the viewer and object centered perspectives Marr describes for vision. I propose to explore the possibility that we may find here the model for the existence of stylistic individualism within overarching historical stylistic generalizations, and even more, that this may be what feminists are searching for when they try to resist being coopted by the masculine language of objectivity. Ellen Spolsky teaches English literature and literary theory and is the Director of the Lechter Institute for Literary Research at Bar-Ilan University, Israel. His seminal work in evaluating foreign language proficiencies across multiple cultures combined his expertise in psycholinguistics with that in psychometrics and defined fundamental issues in the study of language acquisition. 一种高效的图像细化算法在焊缝跟踪中的应用

针对焊缝跟踪图像处理的特点，研究了二值化后的图像如何进一步细化的方法；采用先对焊缝的边缘进行提取，然后从垂直于焊缝的方向进行扫描的方法，取两条边缘的中点，即是焊缝的骨架；结果表明：此算法能准确地对一幅二值图细化，满足焊缝跟踪中图像处理的要求；这种算法的突出特点是计算量小，处理速度快，非常适合于焊缝的实时处理跟踪，而且不用改写算法，既适合于黑色背景白色图像，也适合于白色背景黑色图像.本算法通过推导得到四条处理准则，在遵循这几条处理准则的基础上逐点扫描图像，按照准则来确定目标点的删除与保留，达到细化的最终目的.     

You said it before and you'll say it again: Expectations of consistency in communication.

Repeated reference creates strong expectations in addressees that a speaker will continue to use the same expression for the same object. The authors investigate the root reason for these expectations by comparing a cooperativeness-based account (Grice, 1975) with a simpler consistency-based account. In two eye-tracking experiments, the authors investigated the expectations underlying the effect of precedents on comprehension. The authors show that listeners expect speakers to be consistent in their use of expressions even when these expectations cannot be motivated by the assumption of cooperativeness. The authors conclude that though this phenomenon seems to be motivated by cooperativeness, listeners' expectation that speakers be consistent in their use of expressions is governed by a general expectation of consistency. Speakers gaze at objects while preparing intentionally inaccurate labels for them.

When describing scenes, speakers gaze at objects while preparing their names (Z. M. Griffin & K. Bock, 2000). In this study, the authors investigated whether gazes to referents occurred in the absence of a correspondence between visual features and word meaning. Speakers gazed significantly longer at objects before intentionally labeling them inaccurately with the names of similar things (e.g., calling a horse a dog) than when labeling them accurately. This held for grammatical subjects and objects as well as agents and patients. Moreover, the time spent gazing at a referent before labeling it with a novel word or accurate name was similar and decreased as speakers gained experience using the novel word. These results suggest that visual attention in speaking may be directed toward referents in the absence of any association between their visual forms and the words used to talk about them. 基于集群计算机的保护定值在线校核

采用分布式计算技术，研究并实现了基于集群计算机的保护定值在线校核并行计算方法。首先分析了保护定值校核计算的计算量和计算特点，接着对可能采用的并行计算方法进行比较，最后选择了基于电网分块的并行计算方法。采用协调机加计算子机的计算模式，在协调机上执行分块算法，通过基于主导节点的图划分方法把电网分成几块，每台计算子机只校核1块电网内的保护定值，最后由协调机收集汇总计算结果。现场应用证明，该并行计算方法正确、有效。     

An environment for prototyping distributed applications

Designing a distributed application is an extremely complex task. Proper facilities for prototyping distributed applications can be useful in evaluating a design, and also in understanding the effect of different parameters on the performance of an application. We describe a language for prototyping distributed applications, that supports different communication primitives with specified delay, and provides primitives to aid debugging and evaluation. Our environment for executing distributed programs supports heterogeneous computation in which processes can execute on different hardware. Different source languages can be used for coding different modules of the processes. The system has a centralized control and monitoring facility which is based on the Suntools window system.
