The impact of maternal personality on individuation during adolescence.

The role of the mother in the resolution of the rapprochement crisis as it continues into adolescence is examined through the analyses of a 14-year-old boy and his mother. The symptoms of the adolescent were anxiety, poor school performance, and drug abuse. The mother sought treatment for intense anxiety and overwhelming dread when contemplating her future and that of her son. The dynamics of the mother, the nature of the symbiotic bond, and their impact on the inability of the adolescent to effectively disengage from anaclitic parental ties are discussed. The importance of understanding parental dynamics in the analysis of adolescents is stressed from theoretical and clinical viewpoints. Prejudice and Stereotype Maintenance Processes: Attention, Attribution, and Individuation.

Three experiments examined the relationship between prejudice and processing of stereotypic information. Higher levels of prejudice were associated with greater attention to and more thorough encoding of stereotype-inconsistent than stereotype-consistent behaviors but only when processing capacity was plentiful (Experiments 1 and 3). High-prejudice participants attributed consistent behaviors to internal factors and inconsistent behaviors to external forces (Experiment 2). Together, these results suggest that high-prejudice people attend carefully to inconsistent behaviors to explain them away but only if they have sufficient resources to do so. Results also showed that low-prejudice but not high-prejudice participants formed individuated impressions by integrating the implications of the target's behaviors (i.e., individuating). High levels of prejudice appear to be associated with biased encoding and judgment processes that may serve to maintain stereotypes. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

Carol and the beanstalk.

Contends that the hypothesis put forth by Carol Gilligan is simple. The current theories of psychological development are biased by a single track comprehension of maturity--separation-individuation. This is a motif for all modern theories. There is nothing wrong here, except, the separation-individuation track has a distinctly male turn to it. In other words men develop in that way but, typically, women hardly identify with it. Gilligan studies, among other things, the relation between identity and moral choice as they are integrated during the long transition from adolescence to adulthood. What Gilligan has offered is not a substitution of one theory for another but a profound clarification about development and experience. People move and mature at a pace and along a course of development often outside their or our awareness. Men and women differ in these courses even though there is a "teleology"...a convergence in parity. Gilligan true to her research interests and her basic honesty as a scientist, draws her conclusions well within the boundaries of her science--identity and its intriguing connection to moral development.
