Advanced oxidation treatment using low pressure UV light coupled with hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) was evaluated for the oxidation of six pharmaceuticals in three wastewater effluents. The removal of these six pharmaceuticals (meprobamate, carbamazepine, dilantin, atenolol, primidone and trimethoprim) varied between no observed removal and >90%. The role of the water quality (i.e., alkalinity, nitrite, and specifically effluent organic matter (EfOM)) on hydroxyl radical (OH) exposure was evaluated and used to explain the differences in pharmaceutical removal between the three wastewaters. Results indicated that the efficacy of UV/H2O2 treatment for the removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater was a function of not only the concentration of EfOM but also its inherent reactivity towards OH. The removal of pharmaceuticals also correlated with reductions in ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm (UV254), which offers utilities a surrogate to assess pharmaceutical removal efficiency during UV/H2O2 treatment. 相似文献

The decomposition of a model pharmaceutical compound, pentoxifylline, in aqueous solution was investigated using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) in coaxial configuration, operated in pulsed regime, at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. The solution was made to flow as a film over the surface of the inner electrode of the plasma reactor, so the discharge was generated at the gas-liquid interface. Oxygen was introduced with a flow rate of 600 sccm. After 60 min plasma treatment 92.5% removal of pentoxifylline was achieved and the corresponding decomposition yield was 16 g/kWh. It was found that pentoxifylline degradation depended on the initial concentration of the compound, being faster for lower concentrations. Faster decomposition of pentoxifylline could be also achieved by increasing the pulse repetition rate, and implicitly the power introduced in the discharge, however, this had little effect on the decomposition yield. The degradation products were investigated by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technique (LC-MS). The evolution of the intermediates during plasma treatment showed a fast increase in the first 30 min, followed by a slower decrease, so that these products are almost completely removed after 120 min treatment time. 相似文献

A hydrogen peroxide biosensor was used to monitor hydrogen peroxide concentrations in a UV/hydrogen peroxide immobilised Fenton advanced oxidation process (AOP). The biosensor is based on gas phase monitoring and thus is more resistant to fouling from the liquid phase constituents of industrial processes. The biosensor is supplied with catalase continually, therefore overcoming any problems with enzyme degradation, which would occur in an immobilised enzyme biosensor. The biosensors response was linear within the experimental range 30-400mg H(2)O(2)l(-1) with a R(2) correlation of 0.99. The hydrogen peroxide monitor was used to monitor residual peroxide in an AOP, operated with a step overload of hydrogen peroxide, with correlation factors of 0.96-0.99 compared to offline hydrogen peroxide determinations by UV spectroscopy. Sparging the sample with nitrogen was found to be effective in reducing the interference from dissolved gases produced with the AOP itself. It is proposed that this biosensor could be used to improve the effectiveness of AOPs via hydrogen peroxide control. 相似文献

Anionic, cationic and nonionic surfactants being frequently employed in the textile preparation process were subjected to H(2)O(2)/UV-C treatment. As a consequence of the considerable number of parameters affecting the H(2)O(2)/UV-C process, an experimental design methodology was used to mathematically describe and optimize the single and combined influences of the critical process variables treatment time, initial H(2)O(2)concentration and chemical oxygen demand (COD) on parent pollutant (surfactant) as well as organic carbon (COD and total organic carbon (TOC)) removal efficiencies. Multivariate analysis was based on two different photochemical treatment targets; (i) full oxidation/complete treatment of the surfactants or, alternatively, (ii) partial oxidation/pretreatment of the surfactants to comply with the legislative discharge requirements. According to the established polynomial regression models, the process independent variables "treatment time" (exerting a positive effect) and "initial COD content" (exerting a negative effect) played more significant roles in surfactant photodegradation than the process variable "initial H(2)O(2) concentration" under the studied experimental conditions. 相似文献

This study investigated the treatment performances of H2O2 oxidation alone and its combination with granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption for raw leachate from the NENT landfill (Hong Kong) with a very low biodegradability ratio (BOD5/COD) of 0.08. The COD removal of refractory compounds (as indicated by COD values) by the integrated H2O2 and GAC treatment was evaluated, optimized and compared to that by H2O2 treatment alone with respect to dose, contact time, pH, and biodegradability ratio. At an initial COD concentration of 8000 mg/L and NH3-N of 2595 mg/L, the integrated treatment has substantially achieved a higher removal (COD: 82%; NH3-N: 59%) than the H2O2 oxidation alone (COD: 33%; NH3-N: 4.9%) and GAC adsorption alone (COD: 58%) at optimized experimental conditions (p ≤ 0.05; t-test). The addition of an Fe(II) dose at 1.8 g/L further improved the removal of refractory compounds by the integrated treatment from 82% to 89%. Although the integrated H2O2 oxidation and GAC adsorption could treat leachate of varying strengths, treated effluents were unable to meet the local COD limit of less than 200 mg/L and the NH3-N of lower than 5 mg/L. However, the integrated treatment significantly improved the biodegradability ratio of the treated leachate by 350% from 0.08 to 0.36, enabling the application of subsequent biological treatments for complementing the degradation of target compounds in the leachate prior to their discharge. 相似文献

The degradation of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) by UV irradiation at different wavelengths was investigated under varying boundary conditions. The results showed that conventional UV radiation (254 nm) is ineffective in removing these compounds from water. In contrast to the usual UV radiation UV/VUV radiation (254 + 185 nm) was more effective in the removal of the taste and odour compounds. The degradation could be described by a simple pseudo first-order rate law with rate constants of about 1.2 × 10−3 m2 J−1 for geosmin and 2-MIB in ultrapure water. In natural water used for drinking water abstraction the rate constants decreased to 2.7 × 10−4 m2 J−1 for geosmin and 2.5 × 10−4 m2 J−1 for 2-MIB due to the presence of NOM. Additionally, the formation of the by-product nitrite was studied. In the UV/VUV irradiation process up to 0.6 mg L−1 nitrite was formed during the complete photoinitiated oxidation of the odour compounds. However, the addition of low ozone doses could prevent the formation of nitrite in the UV/VUV irradiation experiments. 相似文献
