A comparison of dietarian identity profiles between vegetarians and vegans

Vegetarianism and veganism are often grouped together in nutritional and psychological investigations. Yet an emerging body of literature has highlighted that vegetarians and vegans differ along a number of neurological, attitudinal, and behavioral variables. In this research, I found that vegetarians and vegans exhibit different dietarian identity profiles. Compared to vegetarians, vegans saw their dietary patterns as more intertwined with their identity (higher centrality), had more positive feelings toward their dietary in-group (higher private regard), felt as if other people judge them more negatively for following their dietary patterns (lower public regard), evaluated out-group dieters more negatively (lower out-group regard), and had stronger motivations for following their dietary patterns (higher prosocial, personal, and moral motivations). By distinguishing between vegetarians and vegans more concretely, investigators can capture meaningful within-group heterogeneity in how people think, feel, and behave when it comes to eschewing animal products.     

Almost k -Wise Independent Sample Spaces and Their Cryptologic Applications

An almost k -wise independent sample space is a small subset of m bit sequences in which any k bits are ``almost independent'. We show that this idea has close relationships with useful cryptologic notions such as multiple authentication codes (multiple A -codes), almost strongly universal hash families, almost k -resilient functions, almost correlation-immune functions, indistinguishable random variables and k -wise decorrelation bias of block ciphers. We use almost k -wise independent sample spaces to construct new efficient multiple A -codes such that the number of key bits grows linearly as a function of k (where k is the number of messages to be authenticated with a single key). This improves on the construction of Atici and Stinson \cite{AS96}, in which the number of key bits is Ω (k ² ) . We introduce the concepts of ɛ -almost k -resilient functions and almost correlation-immune functions, and give a construction for almost k -resilient functions that has parameters superior to k -resilient functions. We also point out the connection between almost k -wise independent sample spaces and pseudorandom functions that can be distinguished from truly random functions, by a distinguisher limited to k oracle queries, with only a small probability. Vaudenay \cite{Vaudenay99} has shown that such functions can be used to construct block ciphers with a small decorrelation bias. Finally, new bounds (necessary conditions) are derived for almost k -wise independent sample spaces, multiple A -codes and balanced ɛ -almost k -resilient functions. Physico‐chemical and sensory attributes in conjunction with multivariate analysis of two potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) cultivars after 90 days of storage: an exploratory authentication study

Two cultivars of potato (Spunta and Agria), were studied in terms of their physico‐chemical and sensory characteristics. These cultivars were cultivated in three geographical regions of Greece (Macedonia, North Greece; Thessaly, Central Greece; Peloponnese, South Greece) and were stored for 90 days after harvesting. The physico‐chemical characteristics of the tubers determined, were pH, total acidity, firmness, dry matter and content in Ν, in Κ, P, Cu, Mn, Zn and Fe. The sensory characteristics measured for raw tubers of potato after storage, were skin colour, skin brightness, internal colour, surface roughness, odour intensity, moistness, surface wrinkling and stains while the sensory characteristics measured for the boiled tubers of potato were odour intensity, moistness, special taste, sweet taste, aftertaste persistence, metal taste, pastiness, mastication, flavour intensity, elasticity and overall acceptability. The application of multivariate analysis (principal component analysis, cluster analysis and discriminant analysis), revealed a variety of relations between the various parameters and resulted in satisfactory grouping either per geographical region or per cultivar.     

Transformation on Infinite Double Series and Applications to Harmonic Number Identities

A general transformation formula between an infinite double series and an infinite single sum is established, which specializes to several infinite double series identities, including a recent one due to Lyons, Paule and Riese (2002).     

Noise compensation in a person verification system using face and multiple speech features

In this paper, we demonstrate that use of a recently proposed feature set, termed Maximum Auto-Correlation Values, which utilizes information from the source part of the speech signal, significantly improves the robustness of a text independent identity verification system. We also propose an adaptive fusion technique for integration of audio and visual information in a multi-modal verification system. The proposed technique explicitly measures the quality of the speech signal, adjusting the amount of contribution of the speech modality to the final verification decision. Results on the VidTIMIT database indicate that the proposed approach outperforms existing adaptive and non-adaptive fusion techniques. For a wide range of audio SNRs, the performance of the multi-modal system utilizing the proposed technique is always found to be better than the performance of the face modality.
