Power, approach, and inhibition.

This article examines how power influences behavior. Elevated power is associated with increased rewards and freedom and thereby activates approach-related tendencies. Reduced power is associated with increased threat, punishment, and social constraint and thereby activates inhibition-related tendencies. The authors derive predictions from recent theorizing about approach and inhibition and review relevant evidence. Specifically, power is associated with (a) positive affect, (b) attention to rewards, (c) automatic information processing, and (d) disinhibited behavior. In contrast, reduced power is associated with (a) negative affect; (b) attention to threat, punishment, others' interests, and those features of the self that are relevant to others' goals; (c) controlled information processing; and (d) inhibited social behavior. The functional hypothesis: A family systems contribution toward an understanding of the healing process of the common factors.

In this article, the authors link a central organizing concept and process, The Functional Hypothesis, to the literature on metatheoretical approaches to the psychotherapy process. The Functional Hypothesis is presented as a central thread that runs through all family systems models, the employment of which contributes to successful therapeutic outcomes. The Functional Hypothesis is linked to the literature on client factors in emotional healing and is posited as the creative catalyst for the dynamics of the Common Factors. A Case Example is included, exemplifying the metatheoretical Internal Family Systems Therapy model which operationalizes therapeutic work with the Functional Hypothesis. Modeling information architecture for the organization

The issue of information architecture (IA) for organizations has recently received considerable attention in IS development. However, as yet little research has been reported on modeling IA using a systematic approach. This paper describes an object-oriented method for modeling it. The proposed method extends the traditional concept of IS analysis into the context of contemporary information technology (IT), and is useful for planning IT-enabled business process reengineering for the organization.     

Graham's problem on shortest networks for points on a circle

Suppose a configurationX consists ofn points lying on a circle of radiusr. If at most one of the edges joining neighboring points has length strictly greater thanr, then the Steiner treeS consists of all these edges with a longest edge removed. In order to showS is, in fact, just the minimal spanning treeT, a variational approach is used to show the Steiner ratio for this configuration is at least one and equals one only ifS andT coincide. The variational approach greatly reduces the number of possible Steiner trees that need to be considered.

Problem-oriented modules for process simulation. resolution strategies for simulation and optimization

A new resolution strategy is presented to overcome short-comings of the sequential modular process flowsheeting. Following a logic flow of information, different from the material flow of streams in the flowsheet, changes the mathematical structure of the system of equations that models the units. New programs have been generated, very different from traditional modules. Deciding an appropriate resolution strategy usually leads to a dramatic reduction in required CPU times and to an increased flexibility to handle different problems. The simulation convergence and process optimization can be approached from a different perspective.
