The objective of this study was to test a new in-kiln sensor for monitoring lumber moisture content during industrial drying. The theoretical foundation of the technology was already known, because it is based on electrical conductivity, but the mechanism of implementation was new and required validation. For this reason, the technology was compared with two other widely used methods for assessing lumber moisture content, namely, the oven-drying and electrical capacitance methods. The tests were performed in a 120-m3 industrial kiln operated by a sawmill in the eighth region of Chile, and the results showed that the average moisture content at the end of drying was satisfactorily determined by the new in-line sensor. As predicted by theory, the sensor was not able to accurately measure moisture content above 25%, but it was still able to provide the equivalent of a drying curve for monitoring of the drying process.  相似文献

In contrast to pristine zinc phthalocyanine (1), zinc phthalocyanine based oPPV‐oligomers (2–4) of different chain lengths interact tightly and reversibly with graphite, affording stable and finely dispersed suspensions of mono‐ to few‐layer graphene—nanographene (NG)—that are photoactive. The p‐type character of the oPPV backbones and the increasing length of the oPPV backbones facilitate the overall π–π interactions with the graphene layers. In NG/2, NG/3, and NG/4 hybrids, strong electronic coupling between the individual components gives rise to charge transfer from the photoexcited zinc phthalocyanines to NG to form hundreds of picoseconds lived charge transfer states. The resulting features, namely photo‐ and redoxactivity, serve as incentives to construct and to test novel solar cells. Solar cells made out of NG/4 feature stable and repeatable photocurrent generation during several ‘on‐off’ cycles of illumination with monochromatic IPCE values of around 1%.  相似文献

In the search for new paradigms to simplify multithreaded programming, Transactional Memory (TM) is currently being advocated as a promising alternative to deadlock-prone lock-based synchronization. In this way, future many-core CMP architectures may need to provide hardware support for TM. On the other hand, power dissipation constitutes a first class consideration in multicore processor designs. In this work, we propose Selective Dynamic Serialization (SDS) as a new technique to improve energy consumption without degrading performance in applications with conflicting transactions by avoiding wasted work due to aborted transactions. Our proposal, which is implemented on top of a hardware transactional memory (HTM) system with an eager conflict management policy, detects and serializes conflicting transactions dynamically (at run-time). In its simplest form, in case of conflict, one transaction is allowed to continue whilst the rest are completely stalled. Once the executing transaction has finished, it wakes up several of the stalling transactions. More elaborated implementations of SDS try to delay this behavior until serialization of transactions is profitable, achieving the best trade-off between performance, energy savings and network traffic. SDS implementations differ from each other in the condition that triggers the serialization mode. We have evaluated several SDS schemes using GEMS, a full-system simulator implementing the LogTM-SE Eager–Eager HTM system, and several benchmarks from the STAMP suite. Results for a 16-core CMP show that SDS obtains reductions of 6 % on average in energy consumption (more than 20 % in high contention scenarios) in a wide range of benchmarks without affecting, on average, execution time. At the same time, network traffic level is also reduced by 22 %.  相似文献

The sex pheromone of feral sweet potato weevils Cylas formicarius elegantulus from Cuba was found, via solid-phase microextraction analysis, to be identical to (Z)-3-dodecenyl (E)-2-butenoate, a previously reported compound. Females emitted 20 pg pheromone d−1. In scanning electron microscopy studies carried out on the male antenna, we identified several types of sensilla: sensilla trichoidea of type 1 (ST1) as long hairs (100–150 μm), sensilla trichoidea of type 2 as short hairs (50–60 μm), sensilla basiconica of type 1 as thick pegs (20–25 μm), sensilla basiconica of type 2 as curved pegs (10–15 μm), and sensilla basiconica of type 3 as thin and straight short pegs (15–20 μm). The same types were observed in female antennae but ST1 were far less abundant than in males. Sensilla chaetica were also found on the flagellum subsegments in both sexes. In electrophysiological tests, the crotonate function in the pheromone structure proved to be critical for activity since regular depolarizations (0.6–0.8 mV) were obtained with puffs on 1 μg of the attractant, but not with puffs of the formate, acetate, propionate, or butyrate analogue of the pheromone. In a double dual-choice olfactometer, males showed maximum activity between the 4th and the 8th hr of scotophase at a dose of 50–1000 ng of pheromone. In field tests, a correlation between the contents of the Z,E isomer in the pheromone formulation with activity was noticed, and baits containing this isomer of stereomeric purity >94% showed the highest attractivity. The presence of 5% of the Z,Z isomer in the lure did not induce any synergistic or inhibitory effect, and the alcohol precursor of the pheromone was inactive. The results show that use of a stereomerically pure pheromone may not be necessary in pest control strategies.  相似文献

Solanum elaeagnifolium (trompillo or silverleaf nightshade) is an endemic plant from the northeast of Mexico and southwest of United States. This plant is considered as a weed with negative impact on agriculture and livestock production. Nevertheless, in some places of Chihuahua, Mexico, the berries of this plant have been used for decades in the manufacture of artisanal filata-type asadero cheese. The milk-clotting enzyme of S. elaeagnifolium has been scarcely studied; for this reason, the aim of this work was to explore some properties of this plant coagulant. Protein extracts (PEs) from ripe berries of S. elaeagnifolium were characterized by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and assessed for milk-clotting activity. In addition, milk gels and miniature fresh-type cheeses manufactured with the plant coagulant were analyzed for their texture properties. The PE from the berries of S. elaeagnifolium contained 8 proteins with molecular weights from 22 to 62 kDa. Some bands observed in the PE had similar molecular weights as reported for aspartic proteinases such as chymosin. The extracts from the berries of S. elaeagnifolium had lower milk-cloting activities than observed with rennin or chymosin, but this plant coagulant produced firm gels under acidic conditions. The mini-cheeses manufactured with this coagulant were softer than cheeses manufactured with rennin or chymosin. For this reason, the coagulant from the ripe berries of S. elaeagnifolium could be suitable not only for the manufacture of filata-type cheeses but also for the manufacture of soft cheeses such as cream cheese. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Silverleaf nightshade (trompillo) is a plant that grows in northern Mexico and the southwestern United States. This plant is considered a weed with negative impact on agriculture and livestock production. However, the ripe berries of this plant have been used by ancient Pima Indians as a substitute of rennin in making cheese. In this work, it was observed that this plant coagulant had lower activity and produced softer cheeses than did rennin or chymosin. For this reason, the coagulant from berries of S. elaeagnifolium could be used for the manufacture of soft cheeses such as cream cheese.  相似文献

A novel, vitamin E-stabilized, medical grade ultra-high molecular polyethylene, MG003 (DSM Biomedical; The Netherlands), has been very recently introduced for use in total joint replacements. This homopolymer resin features average molecular weight similar to that of conventional GUR 1050 resin (5.5–6*106 g/mol), but a higher degree of linearity. The aim of this study was to characterize the microstructure, thermal and thermooxidation properties as well as the mechanical behavior of this novel MG003 resin before and after gamma irradiation in air to 90 kGy. For this purpose, a combination of experimental techniques were performed including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetry (TG), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-Ray Diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and uniaxial tensile tests. As-consolidated MG003 materials exhibited higher crystalline contents (~ 62%), transition temperatures (~ 140 °C), crystal thickness (~ 36 nm), yield stress (~ 25 MPa) and elastic modulus (~ 400 MPa) than GUR 1050 controls (55%, 136 °C, 27 nm, 19 MPa, and 353 MPa, respectively). Irradiation produced similar changes in both MG003 and GUR 1050 materials, specifically increased crystallinity (63% and 60%, respectively), crystal thickness (39 nm and 30 nm), yield stress (27 MPa and 21 MPa), but, above of all, loss of elongation to breakage (down to 442 and 469%, respectively). Thermogravimetric and EPR results suggest comparable susceptibilities to oxidation for both MG003 and GUR 1050 polyethylenes. Based on the present findings, MG003 appears as a promising alternative medical grade polyethylene and it may satisfactorily contribute to the performance of total joint replacements.  相似文献

A general thermodynamic analysis is given of dissipative self-assembly (DSA). Subsequently, the analysis is used to quantify the lost work in a recently published chemical realization of DSA (Boekhoven et al., Angew Chem Int Ed 49:4825, 2010) where a formation reaction produces the monomers that subsequently self-assemble and are finally annihilated by means of a destruction reaction. For this example, the work lost in self-assembly itself is found to be negligibly small compared to the work lost in the reactions driving the non-spontaneous formation reaction and the kinetically hindered destruction reaction.  相似文献

One of the relevant phenomenon associated with in-stent restenosis in coronary arteries is an altered haemodynamics in the stented region. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) offers the possibility to investigate the haemodynamics at a level of detail not always accessible within experimental techniques. CFD can quantify and correlate the local haemodynamics structures which might lead to in-stent restenosis. The aim of this work is to study the fluid dynamics of realistic stented coronary artery models which replicate the complete clinical procedure of stent implantation. Two cases of pathologic left anterior descending coronary arteries with their bifurcations are reconstructed from computed tomography angiography and conventional coronary angiography images. Results of wall shear stress and relative residence time show that the wall regions more prone to the risk of restenosis are located next to stent struts, to the bifurcations and to the stent overlapping zone for both investigated cases. Considering a bulk flow analysis, helical flow structures are generated by the curvature of the zone upstream from the stent and by the bifurcation regions. Helical recirculating microstructures are also visible downstream from the stent struts. This study demonstrates the feasibility to virtually investigate the haemodynamics of patient-specific coronary bifurcation geometries.  相似文献
