Recognizes the receipt of the American Psychological Association's 1972 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award by Patrick Suppes. The award citation reads: "For his wide-ranging contributions to theory, experiment, and application in psychology. His theories, which combine logical precision, mathematical power, and testability, include fundamental probabilistic analyses of learning, algebraic studies of utility, geometric representations of perceptual processes, and penetrating work on the logic of measurement. His experiments concern utility and game situations, discrete and continuous learning, and the attainment of logical, arithmetic, and linguistic concepts. His applications to computer-assisted instruction grow out of explicit theory and pertinent experiments and exploit the nationwide computer facility he has developed. The Board for the Advancement of Psychology in the Public Interest presents two awards annually to persons who have advanced psychology as a science and/or profession by a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of outstanding contributions in the public interest. Robert A. Rescorla is one of the 1986 recipients of the Awards for Distinguished Scientific Contributions. Rescorla receives this award because of his "development of experimental techniques, designs, and strategies which allow elegant analyses of the formarion of associations. His use of Pavlovian conditioning as a representative associative process has enabled him to question and expand the laws of association put forth by Aristotle and the British Associationists. With ingenious experiments, he has quantified the informativeness of events in conditioning, supplanting the law of contiguity with the concept of CS/US contingency. He has, with Wagner, developed a theory of associative processes in conditioning; his defining experiments exemplify the close interplay between theory and data, enhancing our conception of association formation." Gardner Murphy: American Psychological Foundation Gold Medal Award.

Each year at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Foundation presents its Gold Medal Award to a senior American psychologist in recognition of a distinguished and long-continued record of scientific and scholarly accomplishment. Additionally, with the Medal goes a cash award of $1,000. Past recipients of the Gold Medal Award are Edwin B. Guthrie, Edwin G. Boring, John Dashiell, Walter Miles, Gordon W. Allport, Heinrich Kluver, Karl M. Dallenbach, Floyd H. Allport, Henry A. Murray, Sidney L. Pressey, and B. F. Skinner. The 1972 award recipient is Gardner Murphy. Murphy is well known to several generations of psychologists through his Historical Introduction to Modern Psychology, his ground-breaking Experimental Social Psychology, and his Personality: A Bio-Social Approach to Origins and Structure. The Awards for Distinguished Scientific Contribution are presented by the American Psychological Association at the annual convention. The awardees for this year are: Lee J. Cronbach, Conrad Kraft, Brenda Milner, and Benton J. Underwood. They were each presented with an award citation of his/her formal contributions to the development of scientific psychology and a check for one thousand dollars. These psychologists have agreed, in accordance with established custom, to present addresses on some phase of their scientific work at the 1974 Convention. The presentation of awards was made by R. The award citation reads: "For his leadership in social psychology which, under his impact, grew from an insignificant subarea of psychology to a field of major importance. Through his diverse contributions he enriched our theoretical and empirical understanding of man's interaction with the social environment. He opened up new fields of inquiry and fostered novel approaches to the study of the relationship of personality and culture. His work led the way to a greater interdisciplinary involvement of social psychology, especially with sociology and anthropology, not only on the conceptual level, but also in the application of interdisciplinary conceptions to pressing social problems."
