Analysis of earthworms offers potential for assessing the transfer of organic anthropogenic waste indicators (AWIs) derived from land-applied biosolid or manure to biota. Earthworms and soil samples were collected from three Midwest agricultural fields to measure the presence and potential for transfer of 77 AWIs from land-applied biosolids and livestock manure to earthworms. The sites consisted of a soybean field with no amendments of human or livestock waste (Site 1), a soybean field amended with biosolids from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (Site 2), and a cornfield amended with swine manure (Site 3). The biosolid applied to Site 2 contained a diverse composition of 28 AWls, reflecting the presence of human-use compounds. The swine manure contained 12 AWls, and was dominated by biogenic sterols. Soil and earthworm samples were collected in the spring (about30 days after soil amendment) and fall (140-155 days after soil amendment) at all field sites. Soils from Site 1 contained 21 AWIs and soil from Sites 2 and 3 contained 19 AWls. The AWI profiles at Sites 2 and 3 generally reflected the relative composition of AWls present in waste material applied. There were 20 AWls detected in earthworms from Site 1 (three compounds exceeding concentrations of 1000 microg/kg), 25 AWls in earthworms from Site 2 (seven compounds exceeding concentrations of 1000 microg/ kg), and 21 AWls in earthworms from Site 3 (five compounds exceeding concentrations of 1000 microg/kg). A number of compounds thatwere present in the earthworm tissue were at concentrations less than reporting levels in the corresponding soil samples. The AWIs detected in earthworm tissue from the three field sites included pharmaceuticals, synthetic fragrances, detergent metabolites, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), biogenic sterols, disinfectants, and pesticides, reflecting a wide range of physicochemical properties. For those contaminants detected in earthworm tissue and soil, bioaccumulation factors (BAF) ranged from 0.05 (galaxolide) to 27 (triclosan). This study documents that when AWls are present in source materials that are land applied, such as biosolids and swine manure, AWls can be transferred to earthworms.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of an inexpensive porous MoxCy/SiO2 material is presented, which was obtained by mixing ammonium hexamolybdate, sucrose, and a mesoporous silica (SBA-15), with a subsequent heat treatment under inert atmosphere. This porous material presented a specific surface area of 170 m2/g. The catalytic behavior in CO2 hydrogenation was compared with that of Mo2C and α-MoC1?x obtained from ammonium hexamolybdate and sucrose, using different Mo/C ratios. CO2 hydrogenation tests were performed at moderate (100 kPa) and high pressures (2.0 MPa), and it was found that only CO, H2O and CH4 are formed at moderate pressures by the three materials, while at higher pressures, methanol and hydrocarbons (C2H6, C3H8) are also obtained. Differences in selectivity were observed at the high pressure tests. Mo2C presented higher selectivity to CO and methanol compared with MoC1?x, which showed preferential selectivity to hydrocarbons (CH4, C2H6). The porous MoxCy/SiO2 material showed the highest CO2 hydrogenation activity at high temperatures (270 and 300 °C), being a promising material for the conversion of CO2 to CO and CH4.

Abstract:  Advances in our analysis and characterisation of a micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) micromirror device are presented. The micromirror device, to be used as an integral component of an interferometer, has a characteristic dimension of 510  μ m and operates in a dynamic mode with maximum out-of-plane displacements in the order of 10  μ m at oscillation frequencies of up to 1.3 kHz. Developments are carried out by analytical, computational and experimental methods. Analytical and computational nonlinear geometrical models are developed in order to determine the optimal loading-displacement operational characteristics of the micromirror. Because of the operational mode of the micromirror, the experimental characterisation of its loading-displacement transfer function requires utilisation of advanced optical metrology methods. Optoelectronic holographic microscopy (OEHM) methodologies, based on multiple wavelengths being developed to perform such characterisation, are described. The micromirror device is suitable for optical phase measurements and applicable to development of miniaturised optical metrology systems for characterisation of shapes and deformations.  相似文献

A computational technique is described for the general nonlinear analysis of large planar frames under static loading. The analysis accommodates both material and geometric sources of nonlinearity in a highly stable numerical procedure. For material behavior the moment-thrust-curvature relationships are reduced to polynomials made to represent common structural members. The nonlinear influence of axial shortening and P - Δ effects from displaced joints are accommodated by the analysis. Beam-column effects that magnify moments by the influence of axial force acting through deformed members can be approximated by introducing nodal points (or joints) at points of maximum deformation between the ends of members.Accuracy of the analytic procedure is demonstrated by comparing computed results with eight reinforced concrete frames tested at the University of Texas at Austin.  相似文献

Between 1988 and 1992 new rules were enacted to open the EU utilities procurement market to increased competition. The aim was to end national preference for local suppliers and to encourage increased cross-border trade both from within the EU and, when appropriate, from countries outside. This article draws on data that analyse the impact of the new rules on utilities procurement in 1993. The data show that so far the new rules have not significantly altered the preference of EU member states for procurement from locally based suppliers.  相似文献

In essence, the virtual physiological human (VPH) is a multiscale representation of human physiology spanning from the molecular level via cellular processes and multicellular organization of tissues to complex organ function. The different scales of the VPH deal with different entities, relationships and processes, and in consequence the models used to describe and simulate biological functions vary significantly. Here, we describe methods and strategies to generate knowledge environments representing molecular entities that can be used for modelling the molecular scale of the VPH. Our strategy to generate knowledge environments representing molecular entities is based on the combination of information extraction from scientific text and the integration of information from biomolecular databases. We introduce @neuLink, a first prototype of an automatically generated, disease-specific knowledge environment combining biomolecular, chemical, genetic and medical information. Finally, we provide a perspective for the future implementation and use of knowledge environments representing molecular entities for the VPH.  相似文献

This article presents key elements in the evolution of water supply regulation in Colombia over the twentieth century. This is novel in that it contradicts widely accepted and seemingly universal trends in water supply development. By putting apparently recent phenomena into a longer historical trajectory, we are able to nuance the idea of a unidirectional transition from centralized to decentralized governance, as well as the evolution of policies associated with neoliberalization. We find that regulatory development began at the municipal scale in the 1920s, only to be centralized mid-century. By the same token, policies typically associated with neoliberalization – such as corporatization, full cost recovery, and volumetric metering – began in the 1910s and 1920s and not under neoliberalism in the 1980s. The work is based on a database compiled by the authors. The database comprises municipal, departmental and state regulatory interventions from 1909 to 2012.  相似文献
