Experimental results on the dispersion of a fluorescein tracer in a rising froth of water/glycerol mixture with SDS as the frother are described. These experiments illuminate the physical phenomena that are important to the application of washwater in flotation processes. Two-dimensional numerical solutions of foam drainage in rising systems are also presented at values of background liquid hold-up relevant to the flotation process. It is shown that, at short times, the dominant mechanism for tracer dispersion is due to liquid drainage in the froth rather than due to packed-bed type behaviour as liquid percolates through a network of Plateau borders in between the bubbles. Two foam drainage models, channel-dominated drainage and node-dominated drainage, have been previously described in the literature. It is shown that neither can adequately predict the phenomena of tracer dispersion in a rising froth. The reality appears to lie somewhere in between the two extremes. However, it has been observed that channel-dominated behaviour is approached as liquid disperses and local volumetric liquid hold-up decreases. Finally experimental results are presented for a tracer of very concentrated fluorescein solution that show dispersion behaviour quite unlike that described by the two established foam drainage models. 相似文献

The refractive index study of copoly(arylene-siloxane)s constructed with amide, ester, or ether linkage units was conducted to synthesize a step-growth polymer for application in flexible displays. The copoly(arylene-siloxane) based materials have potential use in optical applications due to their durability, flexibility, and possession of good optical clarity properties when compared to conventional silica-filled polydimethylsiloxane-based materials. Measurement of refractive index (RI) was used as the main mode of analysis due to its direct correlation to optical clarity and material flexibility. Synthesis and characterization, including RI compiled data, was performed for six series of step-growth polymers. Effects of different linkage units, namely amides, esters, and ethers, adjacent to at least one six-membered cyclic unit (aromatic or aliphatic) were evaluated. It was observed that the refractive index of these polymers was directly proportional to the aryl content; however, the influence on RI was not equal across all types of linkage units. The highest RI copolymer, poly(4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate-co-carbinol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane) (MDI-SD1.0k), yielded refractive index 1.470 and molecular weight (Mn) 16,100 g/mol; however, the copolymer poly(toluene-2,4-diisocyanate-co-carbinol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane) (TDI-SD) had the highest RI (1.462) per phenyl content. The 4,4-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI), and hydrogenated methylenediphenyl-4,4-diisocyanate (HMDI) amide containing linkages best improved the refractive indices of the materials studied. 相似文献

The addition of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) as a sintering aid to yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) reduces the required densification temperature. Sintering aids are incorporated using a number of processes which can lead to ambiguity when determining the effect of the sintering aid on the densification mechanism. In this study, a novel method for sintering aid addition, Particle Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), was used to deposit an amorphous Al2O3 thin film on YSZ particles. Transmission electron microscopy confirmed the deposition of conformal Al2O3 thin films on the surface of the YSZ particles. The addition of Al2O3 to YSZ reduced the temperature at which densification began by ~75°C, and 2.2 wt% Al2O3 addition resulted in a minimum activation energy for the intermediate stage of densification. This concentration is well in excess of the solubility limit of Al2O3 in YSZ, showing that Al2O3 does not enhance the densification of YSZ solely by dissolving into the YSZ lattice and activating volume diffusion. The addition of 0.7 wt% Al2O3 with one Particle ALD cycle enhanced the ionic conductivity of YSZ by 23% after sintering at 1350°C for 2 hours, demonstrating that dense parts with high oxygen ion conductivities can be produced after sintering at reduced temperatures. One Particle ALD cycle is a fast, easily scaled-up process that eliminates the use of solvents and has substantial cost/performance advantages over conventional processing. 相似文献

This longitudinal study used multilevel modeling to examine the relationships between witnessing intimate partner violence (IPV), community and school violence exposure (CSVE), family social support, gender, and depression over 2 years within a sample of 100 school-aged children. We found significant between-child differences in both the initial levels of depression and the trajectories of depression; depression over time was positively associated with change in witnessing IPV and CSVE and negatively associated with change in support. Two significant 3-way interactions were found: Gender and initial support, as well as gender and initial witnessing IPV, both significantly moderated the effect of change in witnessing IPV on the children’s depression over time. Optimization and heuristic methods for the design of medium to large storage area networks (SANs) are in the early stages of development, but are required if large clustered storage systems are to become a viable alternative to expensive monolithic storage. We present here a new mixed-integer formulation for optimal design of a storage area network. Our formulation models the Single-edge Core-Edge topology. Using a testbed of medium to large problems, we compare the solution times for our new formulation to the current benchmark in the literature—our formulation solves in significantly less time with an off-the-shelf optimization software package. We also generate problem-specific cuts to further reduce the solution time for our formulation. An algorithm, which includes an integer programming subproblem, is described for generating some of these cuts. For all test problems, the cuts yield a further reduction in the solution time. 相似文献

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has proposed using the common criteria and system-level protection profiles (SLPPs) to specify security requirements in large systems, such as those used in air traffic management. This article summarizes experience with SLPP and security targets for the US Federal Aviation Administration's National Airspace System. The authors review the FAA efforts, highlight the problems encountered, and offer suggestions for future work, calling for more research on linking systems, software, and security requirements engineering with SLPP; clearer ties between security specifications and system certification; and better guidance on the appropriate use of SLPP as a prerequisite to widespread use. 相似文献

Comments on the article "A house divided? The psychology of red and blue America" by D. C. Seyle and M. L. Newman (see record 2006-11202-001). Seyle and Newman concluded that the red and blue metaphor is inaccurate and proposed a purple America strategy to better convey that the majority of people do not align themselves with political extremes. There is interdisciplinary agreement on this. Although not cited by Seyle and Newman, the findings by Professor Fiorina of Stanford University were reported by the APA Monitor on Psychology in its coverage of the 2005 APA State Leadership Conference (Murray Law, 2005). We had claimed that arc-consistency is preserved in a constraint reformulation relying on functional dependencies (Theorem 2 of Cambazard and O’Sullivan Constraints 13(3):385–406 (2008)). We show that the statement of this theorem was too strong by providing a counter-example. The remote field eddy current (RFEC) technique is of potential interest for inspecting pipelines for stress corrosion cracking. Magnetic saturation techniques would allow higher operating frequencies and scanning speeds to be used. The use of selectively-saturated regions (windows) near the exciter and detector offers additional advantages. Finite element, analytic, and experimental measurements are presented in this paper.
