Dynamic transmission torque of a flexible multiple-disc clutch and brake to intermittent loads

This paper is concerned with a transmission torque of a flexible multiple-disc clutch subjected to dynamic loads. The analysis has been developed on the problem of the clutch subjected to a dynamic load which varies as a half-rectified sine function with time. In the analysis, the elastodynamic theory of a circular plate has been extended to this problem by application of the Laplace transform method. The dynamic pressures and the reaction forces along the edge between discs have been obtained from the conditions of continuity between discs, and from which the transmission torque of the clutch has been concluded. Numerical results of the transmission torque versus time and the deflections and bending moments in the clutch have been given for some important cases     

An efficient zooming method for finite element analysis

In this paper, an efficient, exact zooming technique is developed which employs static condensation and exact structural reanalysis methods. For a multiple level of zooming such that the successive level of zooming is contained within the prior levels of zoom, repeated application of static condensation will reduce the system to one that is associated only with the degrees-of-freedom (dof) of the original model. Then, application of an exact static reanalysis technique permits the displacements at the dof of the original model that are contained in the final zoomed portion of the structure to be obtained first. Next, the response external to the zoom, as well as the response of additional dof within various levels of zooming, can be computed. With the triangular factor of the stiffness matrix of the original system available, this approach involves only the solution of a system of equations of small order. The proposed method is demonstrated by a numerical example.     

Spontaneous haemothorax associated with von Recklinghausen's disease: review of occurrence in Japan

The case history is presented of a 61 year old man with von Recklinghausen's disease who developed a spontaneous haemothorax. In spite of being asymptomatic for five days after drainage, he died as a result of fatal sudden re-bleeding. The post mortem examination showed dissection and rupture of the left subclavian artery. Microscopically, disarrangement of smooth muscle and decrease of elastic fibre was observed in the ruptured artery. Haemothorax in patients with von Recklinghausen's disease may require thoracotomy, even if the condition of the patient appears to be stable.     

Detection of Helicobacter pylori associated antigen and heat shock protein 60 on follicular dendritic cells in the germinal centres of low grade B cell lymphoma of gastric mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)

AIMS: To investigate the localisation of Helicobacter pylori antigens and the expression of human heat shock proteins (HSP) in stomachs affected by MALT lymphoma. METHODS: Surgically resected stomachs from 24 patients with MALT lymphoma were immunostained with anti-H pylori rabbit antibodies (ORP-1 and ORP-2) and anti-human HSP60 mouse monoclonal antibodies (mAb) (LK-1 and LK-2). RESULTS: Follicular dendritic cells of germinal centres in the stomachs affected by MALT lymphoma were immunostained with anti-H pylori polyclonal antibodies and with anti-human HSP60 mAb, as were the epithelial cells. None of the lymph node samples reacted. CONCLUSIONS: Human HSP60, which cross reacts with anti-H pylori polyclonal antibodies, is often expressed on follicular dendritic cells in gastric MALT lymphoma tissues and may be aetiologically relevant to lymphomagenesis of MALT lymphoma.     

Phase relationship of rodlike polymer,poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide), in sulfuric acid-water system

The phase equilibrium was quantitatively investigated by using a typical rodlike polymer, poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide), in mixed solvent system. The experimental results may afford a basis on the formation of liquid crystal of the polymer.
