From the editor.

Introduces this special issue of the International Journal of Play Therapy, which is divided into three sections. The first presents a view of the future of play therapy; that is, what the profession of play therapy will become in the next century. The second section is intended to provide a context for the research award article. The third section is the 1998 Student Research Award. In this editorial, Peter Dixon expresses what a great honour it is to him to take on the editorship of the Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology. He further remarks that the Journal has a long tradition of scientific excellence and rigour that he intends to uphold and foster. Dixon goes on to discuss various aspects of the Journal's nature, and also touches upon a few topics about the Journal's editorial policies. Editor’s and president’s column.

After 10 years as editor of the Consulting Psychology Bulletin cum Consulting Psychology Journal, the time has come to pass the baton to the new editor, Dick Diedrich. This will be my last editor's column. Without getting maudlin, it has been a memorable 10 years for me and, I hope, the journal. Taking over a well-edited divisional newsletter from Paul Lloyd, I shared my vision of creating a journal devoted to consultation with the divisional leadership after several years on the job. Swan song.

Presents remarks from the outgoing editor of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General. The author thanks the readers, writers, reviewers, and unsung administrators and technicians without whom publication of the Journal would be impossible. The author also discusses some of the challenges involved in journal publication, and proposes an alternative scheme for this endeavor. Editorial policies of the American Psychologist.

This year marks the 60th anniversary of the American Psychologist (AP). Since the publication of its first issue in January 1946, AP has served as the flagship journal for the American Psychological Association (APA) and has played an important and unique role for the field of psychology. Because of the quality of the articles published in AP, the journal has evolved into one of the most influential and widely cited publications in psychology. The purpose of this editorial is to outline a revised set of policies for the journal that builds on and expands those developed by previous editors (see, e.g., Fowler, 1993; Goodstein, 1987; Kiesler, 1976; Pallack, 1981). Before outlining these policies, I would like to explore the relative status and influence of AP within the universe of psychological and social science journals.
