Polypropylene (PP) based active composite films were prepared by adding butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and tertiary butylated hydroquinone (TBHQ) antioxidants using the extrusion molding process. All concentrations of BHT, 2% to 3% BHA, and 3% TBHQ significantly increased the tensile strength (TS) of the composite films compared with control films. Increasing antioxidant concentration decreased TS values for BHT films, whereas an opposite trend was observed for BHA and TBHQ films. BHA at < 2%, BHT at > 2%, and TBHQ at all added concentrations significantly reduced elongation at break (Eb) of the composite films compared to control films. Water vapor permeability (WVP) of 1% BHT film was not significantly different from control. However, other antioxidants especially at increased concentrations significantly increased WVP values. TBHQ films with 300% to 662% increase had the highest WVP and BHT films with 5% to 81% increase had the lowest WVP among composite films. All three antioxidants had a negative effect on the transparency of the films; however the effect of BHA at higher concentrations was greater. The antioxidants did not change the color attributes of the films. Films containing all antioxidants showed 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging activity, which increased with increase in their concentration, especially for those containing 3 wt.% BHT and TBHQ. Overall, incorporating BHA and BHT into a PP matrix improved mechanical, barrier, antioxidant properties, and film appearance and consequently were proposed for the development of antioxidant active PP films. Static pentane extraction of olive oil from polypropylene was evaluated as a safer, higher throughput alternative to pentane Soxhlet extraction for the recovery of olive oil from polypropylene for overall migration limit determinations. Static, ambient temperature, pentane extraction achieved quantitative recovery of olive oil from polypropylene plaques prepared by using the OM‐5 overall migration limit protocol. Abstract Surgical mesh is a porous fabric that is mainly produced from polymeric monofilaments using the warp-knitting method. Surgical mesh is used for healing hernia. Among the mechanical properties of the mesh, tensile and bursting strength have special significance. In this research, warp-knitted surgical meshes with five structures have been produced using polypropylene monofilament, and the effect of the fabric structure on the bursting characteristics of them has been investigated. All the meshes exhibited supraphysiologic bursting strength. quasi-Sandfly mesh demonstrated the highest, while quasi-Marqussite mesh exhibited the least bursting characteristics. The increase in the bursting characteristics of the meshes is attributed to the increase in the areal density and decrease in the porosity of them. Moreover, conformity between the bursting and tensile properties of them in bias direction has been observed. Overall, quasi-Marqussite mesh was proposed as the most desirable mesh in terms of porosity, weight, and bursting characteristics. 相似文献

ABSTRACT This study discusses the effect of molding temperature, pressure and time on the final compression-molded hybrid composites with polypropylene resin for its flexural strength. The results of tests conducted to characterize the hybrid composites developed with different proportion of fibers and processing conditions are discussed in this study. When comparing the overall results on the flexural strength of the composites, 25:75 Chicken Feather Fiber (CFF)/Jute composite showed highest flexural strength by keeping minimum temperature, maximum pressure and medium time. Three derivatives of bis-styrybiphenyl with different degrees of sulfonation to be used as fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) were synthesized. Studies on their spectroscopic properties were performed using a combination of computational methods. Whitening effects of FWAs and the improved thermal stability of polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The morphology of plastic samples was examined by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). In order to improve the compatibility between FWA and PP, PP grafted with maleic anhydride (MAH) was applied as compatibilizer. The optical properties were further clarified by the results of frontier molecular orbital modeling, which show that the presence of sulfonic sodium group leads to a red shift of maximum UV absorption wavelength and a low HOMO–LUMO energy band gap. It is observed that the addition of 0.010 wt % of the sulfonated FWA would result in the expected whitening effect as well as improved PP thermal stability, while at or above 0.015 wt %, such effects worsen sharply owing to phase separation. Furthermore, the use of MAH-grafted PP as compatibilizer results in improvement of phase behavior and thermal stability. To increase the mechanical properties of recycled carbon fiber-reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites, recycled carbon fibers (RCF) were subjected to atmospheric plasma treatment at different plasma powers (100, 200, and 300 W). The changes on surface topography and roughness of RCF were examined by atomic force microscopy. Plasma treatment of RCF increased the roughness value of RCF. The variation of surface elemental compositions and tensile strength of RCF were determined by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and tensile test, respectively. Plasma-treated RCF-reinforced PP composites were fabricated using high speed thermo-kinetic mixer. Plasma treatment of RCF at 100 W increased the tensile and flexural strength values of RCF-reinforced PP composites considerably by 17 and 11%, respectively. However, plasma treatment of RCF at higher plasma powers (200 W and 300 W) decreased tensile and flexural strength values of composites because of the etching of RCF. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
