The Photomontage Activity of Postmodernism

For decades now, Douglas Crimp’s landmark 1980 essay ‘The Photographic Activity of Postmodernism’ has shaped our understanding of modernism’s aftermath, at least as it unfolded in North America and Western Europe. Less remembered, however, is the degree to which the procedures of disjunction, copying, appropriation, and outright theft that he highlighted were epitomised not just by contemporary photography, but by photomontage in particular. This article recovers the debates that led critics such as Crimp, Abigail Solomon-Godeau, Christopher Phillips, Benjamin Buchloh and others to turn to photomontage as one of their principal objects of concern in what became known as the postmodern critique of photography. Why was montage tasked to perform this critical function, particularly by people around the journal October who had not otherwise devoted the balance of their writing to photography’s history? The article suggests that these men and women, along with the contemporary artists they foregrounded, manifested what Mary Anne Doane has called a ‘desire for signification’, a reaction in the late 1970s against the mute theatricality of minimalist and conceptual art. Photomontage reintroduced representation to contemporary art and to the canon of art history. But unlike the reemerging illusionism in painting that also manifested this desire, montage guarded against an uncomplicated realism by highlighting and critiquing operations of representation in a manner that painting no longer could.     

Development of ceramic fiber reinforced glass ceramic sealants for microtubular solid oxide fuel cells

Ceramic fibers in various forms with different fiber sizes are tested to improve the sealing performance of glass ceramic seals for microtubular solid oxide fuel cell applications. In this regard, several sealing pastes are prepared by mixing each ceramic fibers type with glass ceramics at 1.25 wt %. Five layered microtubular anode supported cells are also fabricated by extrusion and dip coating methods to evaluate the sealing performance of the composite sealants. The pastes are applied between the cells and gas manifolds made of Crofer22 APU. The electrochemical and sealing performances at an operating temperature of 800 °C under hydrogen are investigated after the glass forming process. Microstructures of the sealants are also examined by a scanning electron microscope. Experimental investigations reveal that the cells sealed by the pastes with ceramic bulk fiber and ceramic fiber rope gasket show acceptable open circuit potentials close to the theoretical one. These cells can be also pressurized up to around 150 kPa back pressure in the sealing performance tests. On the other hand, the pastes without any filler, with ceramic rope and with ceramic blanket exhibit poor sealing performance due to gas leakage originated from flowing of the main glass ceramic matrix from the joints. Therefore, ceramic bulk fiber and ceramic fiber rope gasket are found to behave as a stopper and can be used to prevent glass ceramics from flowing for microtubular solid oxide fuel cells or similar applications.     

Autolysis and the endogenous proteinases characterised in beardless barb (Anematichthys apogon) muscle

Beardless barb is a common fish species used in fermentation of fish paste Ka-pi-plaa. Autolytic profile of beardless barb muscle showed the maximum autolysis was at 50 °C, at both acidic and alkaline pH values. With augmentation concentration of NaCl, autolytic activity slightly decreased. Endogenous proteinases isolated from fish muscle in crude extract forms were also characterised. The acidic proteinases had optimum activity at pH 3.0 and 50°C, and they showed higher proteolytic activity than the alkaline proteinases which were optimally active at pH 9.0 and 50 °C. Proteinases in peak at pH 3.0 were inhibited by pepstatin A, but those in peak at pH 9.0 were highly inhibited by PMSF, TLCK and soybean trypsin inhibitor, suggesting that both aspartic and serine proteinases were existed in beardless barb muscle. The proteinases were stable in pH range of 2.0-5.0 but unstable at the temperatures higher than 40 °C. NaCl suppressed the proteolytic activity, ATP activated the proteinase activity, while CaCl₂, MgCl₂ and CoCl₂ exhibited no influence on the activity. The results implied that cathepsin D is the predominant proteinase responsible for autolysis in beardless barb. The findings were useful to improve the processing and qualities of Ka-pi-plaa product using beardless barb as raw material.     

电子束辐照灭菌对昭通酱品质影响研究

以昭通酱的感官评价、部分营养及理化成分为评价指标，研究电子束辐照剂量对其品质的影响。结果表明，当电子束辐照剂量为3.68 kGy时，昭通酱感官综合评价较好，真菌、大肠杆菌达到卫生标准，脂肪含量未显著下降（P＞0.05），过氧化值未显著上升（P＞0.05），6种大豆异黄酮含量未显著下降（P＞0.05），必需氨基酸（EAA）、总氨基酸（TAA）、呈味氨基酸（DAA），条件必需氨基酸（CEAA）未发生显著变化（P＞0.05），表明该剂量对昭通酱营养成分、理化指标的影响相对较小，且微生物指标达到卫生标准，是昭通酱电子束辐照灭菌的最佳剂量。     

Effect of microwave power irradiation on TiO2 nano-structures and binder free paste screen printed dye sensitized solar cells

Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanostructures (nanorods and nanoparticles) were prepared using a low-cost microwave irradiation method from a polyol medium of glycerol. Titanium glycerolate and TiO₂ powders were obtained in the glycerol medium for the first time with four different power densities (240?W, 480?W, 720?W, 960?W) of irradiation using a domestic microwave oven of 2.45?GHz, to understand the impact of power on morphology tuning. The structural and morphological features of the titanium glycerolate and TiO₂ powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Raman spectra analysis. The TiO₂ was successfully used in the fabrication of photovoltaic devices and as a proof-of-concept binder free paste was prepared and successfully employed for photo-anode using screen printing on the fluorine-doped tin oxide substrate.     

Removal and repair techniques for thermal barrier coatings: a review

ABSTRACT

A comprehensive literature review of the existing techniques for removing and repairing of damaged thermal barrier coatings is presented, with the focus on top ceramic coats. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are compared and assessed. The review shows that there is not a universal method applicable to all coating systems. The selection of the coating removal and repair process must be specific to damaged coating systems, based on their composition, type of damages, and available resources. This review will provide some inside look at various approaches in an effort to meet the different coating repair needs.     

小米曲奇预拌粉配方的优化

以预糊化小米粉为主要原材料,研制小米曲奇预拌粉。通过单因素试验,研究小米粉添加量、吉士粉添加量、奶粉添加量、泡打粉添加量、糖粉添加量对小米曲奇感官评分和硬度的影响。采用Box–Behnken法设计试验方案,运用响应面分析法建立二阶多项式非线性回归方程和数值模型,以感官评分和硬度为评判指标,优化小米曲奇预拌粉配方。优化后配方为:小米粉60.00g、低筋面粉40.00 g、吉士粉6.50 g、泡打粉1.00 g、糖粉45.00 g、奶粉8.00 g。在此条件下小米曲奇的理论感官评分为95.04分、硬度为510.11 g。在此配方下制作的小米曲奇呈棕黄色,与市售黄油曲奇相比,具有独特的小米香气和风味。预拌粉降低了小米曲奇制作的专业性、技术性,提高生产效率,利于生产品质稳定、健康味美的小米曲奇产品。     

Effects of red beet extracts on protein and lipid oxidation,colour, microbial,sensory properties and storage stability of Turkish pastırma

Lipid oxidation and discoloration are two important problems in the storage of pastırma, a meat product. In this research, the usability of lyophilized red beet water extract (LRBWE) in cemen paste and its effects on the pastırma quality (especially colour, protein and lipid oxidation, microbial and sensory properties) were investigated during storage. Two trials were conducted; in trial 1, LRBWE was obtained, its various properties were designated and effects on the cemen paste of these extracts (0.0%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8% 1.0% and 1.2%) were determined. In trial 2, pastırma with cemen paste containing 0.8%, 1.0% and 1.2% LRBWE were produced and stored at 4 ± 1 °C for 150 days. The LRBWE did not influence protein oxidation of pastırma, whereas increasing LRBWE level led to a decrease in lipid oxidation (P < 0.01), and an increase in redness (a1) value (P < 0.01) and sensory properties (P < 0.01) of sliced pastırma compared with control pastırma. These results revealed that the addition of 1.0% or 1.2% LRBWE to cemen paste was effective to improve the colour stability, lipid oxidation, microbial and sensory quality of pastırma during storage.     

Bacterial community succession and biogenic amine changes during fermentation of fish-chili paste inoculated with different commercial starter cultures

The microbial dynamics, diversity and succession characterisation during the fermentation of fish-chili paste, with and without starter cultures by high-throughput sequencing, were investigated to identify the relationship between microbial composition and the accumulation of biogenic amines. Results showed that Firmicutes was the predominant phylum, and Lactobacillus and Weissella were the main genera during fermentation process, regardless of the inclusion of starter cultures. Compared with naturally fermented samples (NS; no starter cultures), Pediococcus and Staphylococcus flourished in samples inoculated with SBM-52 starter culture (Staphylococcus xylosus + Staphylococcus carnosus + Pediococcus pentosaceus + Pediococcus acidilactici). Staphylococcus also accounted for a larger proportion in samples inoculated with WBX-43 starter culture (Staphylococcus xylosus + Staphylococcus carnosus). Furthermore, Enterobacter was inhibited in inoculated samples. Unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic means and principal component analyses revealed that microbiota structures were different among NS, SBM and WBX samples. In case of biogenic amines, the concentration of putrescine, cadaverine and tyramine increased to higher levels in NS samples compared with inoculated samples. Our work also investigated the relationship between core bacterial communities and biogenic amines. This study provided an improved understanding for the effects of starter cultures on the microbial community and the quality of fish-chili paste.
