Design and fabrication of lutetium aluminum silicate glass and nanostructured glass for radiation detection

Flexible scintillating fiber plays an important role in X-ray radiation monitoring and high-resolution medical imaging, while construction of scintillating fiber derived from the commercial material system meet with limited success. Here, we report the design and successful fabrication of the Ce-activated lutetium aluminum silicate glass, nanostructured glass, and fiber, and explore their scintillating properties. The scintillating glass with optimized composition and optical properties is determined. The crystallization behavior of lutetium aluminum silicate glass is studied and the nanostructured glass embedded with orthorhombic Lu₂Si₂O₇ phase is successfully constructed for the first time. Importantly, the crystalline layer thickness of the nanostructured glass can be finely tuned and ~172.89% enhancement in the scintillating performance can be achieved. Furthermore, the fiber with large sized core is fabricated and its radiation response properties are tested. The results show that it exhibits high sensitivity and its scintillating emission is lineally dependent on the X-ray power, indicating the potential application for radiation detection.

Superior self-paced memorization of digits in spite of a normal digit span: The structure of a memorist’s skill.

Over the last century many individuals with exceptional memory have been studied and tested in the laboratory. This article studies Chao Lu, who set a Guinness World Record by memorizing 67,890 decimals of pi. Chao Lu’s superior self-paced memorization of digits is shown through analyses of study times and verbal reports to be mediated by mnemonic encoding and retrieval processes. Furthermore, Chao Lu’s development of his superior memory for decimals of pi is consistent with his engagement in thousands of hours of memorization. In contrast to most other studied memorists, who have digit spans over 15 digits, Chao Lu exhibited a digit span in only the normal range. Activation cross sections of the Yb(p,xn)Lu reaction for indirect production of the therapeutic radionuclide Yb

Activation cross sections of the ^natYb(p,xn)¹⁶⁹Lu reaction have been measured for the first time up to 70 MeV to investigate the production possibility of the radionuclide ¹⁶⁹Yb through decay of its parent ¹⁶⁹Lu. The cross sections were measured using the stacked foil irradiation technique and gamma spectrometry. The experimental data were compared with the results of the ALICE-IPPE theoretical model code. Different production routes were compared for the internal radiotherapy related radioisotope ¹⁶⁹Yb. Above 30 MeV proton energy the integral yield of the ^natYb(p,xn)¹⁶⁹Lu reaction is higher than that of the earlier investigated ¹⁶⁹Tm(p,n)¹⁶⁹Yb, ¹⁶⁹Tm(d,2n)¹⁶⁹Yb, ^natEr(α,xn)¹⁶⁹Yb, ^natYb(α,x)¹⁶⁹Lu and ^natHf(p,x)¹⁶⁹Lu reactions at the equivalent particle energies.     

潞安矿区构造裂隙分布特征的实测分析

在地下采矿工程中 ,构造裂隙分布特征对回采工作面顶板移动冒落规律与巷道的稳定性有很大影响 ,受区域地质构造控制的裂隙分布状况即裂隙组数、间距、倾角和展布方位 ,各组裂隙的相互关系决定着裂隙的发育程度 ,而裂隙的空间分布特征、发育程度及其裂隙分布与工作面布置或巷道轴向布置的匹配关系 ,将直接影响工作面的快速安全生产和巷道围岩收敛变形规律与维护稳定 ,通过潞安矿区三个矿井的构造裂隙现场实测 ,分析了不同矿井的构造裂隙优势展布方位 ,比较发育程度差异 ,为评价裂隙分布对巷道稳定性的影响程度奠定了坚实基础
