An improved method for voice pathology detection by means of a HMM-based feature space transformation

This paper presents new a feature transformation technique applied to improve the screening accuracy for the automatic detection of pathological voices. The statistical transformation is based on Hidden Markov Models, obtaining a transformation and classification stage simultaneously and adjusting the parameters of the model with a criterion that minimizes the classification error. The original feature vectors are built up using classic short-term noise parameters and mel-frequency cepstral coefficients. With respect to conventional approaches found in the literature of automatic detection of pathological voices, the proposed feature space transformation technique demonstrates a significant improvement of the performance with no addition of new features to the original input space. In view of the results, it is expected that this technique could provide good results in other areas such as speaker verification and/or identification.     

Stochastic differential equations driven by a Wiener process and fractional Brownian motion: Convergence in Besov space with respect to a parameter

A stochastic differential equation involving both a Wiener process and fractional Brownian motion, with nonhomogeneous coefficients and random initial condition, is considered. The coefficients and initial condition depend on a parameter. The assumptions on the coefficients and the initial condition supplying continuous dependence of the solution on a parameter, with respect to the Besov space norm, are established.     

Stable local dimensionality reduction approaches

Dimensionality reduction is a big challenge in many areas. A large number of local approaches, stemming from statistics or geometry, have been developed. However, in practice these local approaches are often in lack of robustness, since in contrast to maximum variance unfolding (MVU), which explicitly unfolds the manifold, they merely characterize local geometry structure. Moreover, the eigenproblems that they encounter, are hard to solve. We propose a unified framework that explicitly unfolds the manifold and reformulate local approaches as the semi-definite programs instead of the above-mentioned eigenproblems. Three well-known algorithms, locally linear embedding (LLE), laplacian eigenmaps (LE) and local tangent space alignment (LTSA) are reinterpreted and improved within this framework. Several experiments are presented to demonstrate the potential of our framework and the improvements of these local algorithms.

Automatic parallelisation for LTI MIMO state space systems using FPGAs. An optimisation for cost & performance

The parallelism attained by the use of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) has shown remarkable potential for accelerating control systems applications. This comes at a time when well established methods based on inherited serial Central Processor Units (CPUs) cannot guarantee solutions for the increasing execution speed demands. However, the transition from serial to parallel architectures represents a tremendous challenge due to overwhelming numbers of unexplored options and conflicting factors. The work presented achieves a parallelisation characterisation for generic MIMO systems using stand-alone FPGA implementations. The main contribution is that a very fine subset of possible serial/parallel implementations is obtained. This is used to achieve a flexible trade-off between cost and performance. Automatic optimisation of latency, occupied FPGA area and execution speed is attained and justified in respect to most of the feasible scenarios.
